Fields finished third in receptions and second in targets for the Giants on a night when Jaxson Dart (knee) exited after just one series. One of Fields' catches came during that opening drive, as he secured a 14-yard grab on third down to move the chains. The rookie third-round pick has enjoyed a solid complementary role over his first two NFL games, posting a 4-55-0 line on 10 targets. Fields is slotting in ahead of veteran Darnell Mooney on the depth chart heading into a Week 3 home matchup against the Titans on Sunday.

Fields was on the field for 50 of the team's 69 total offensive snaps in his regular-season debut, and he appears to be settling in as the Giants' No. 2 option at wide receiver behind Malik Nabers. The 23-year-old has a sizable 6-foot-4 frame, and he could continue to garner more looks moving forward as he gets more comfortable at the NFL level.

Giants' Malachi Fields: Could see expanded role with Austin out

Fields could be one of multiple Giants receivers who benefits from added opportunities to begin the season after Calvin Austin (knee) sustained a torn ACL during Tuesday's practice, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Listed at 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds, Fields is primarily an "X" receiver and projects to see most of his playing time on the perimeter as a rookie, but the loss of Austin -- who was projected to serve as the Giants' top slot man -- could nonetheless aid his chances of seeing the field. With Austin sidelined, Dan Duggan of The Athletic posts that the Giants will lean on a committee of players in the slot, which could include Malik Nabers (knee). While it's also not out of the question for Fields to see some occasional work as a power slot, the rookie third-round pick would still be a beneficiary of more snaps on the outside if Nabers ends up playing inside more frequently. Fields has drawn generally positive reviews during his first training camp, seeing plenty of reps with the first-team offense while filling in for Nabers, who had been a non-participant or limited participant for much of the summer before being cleared to take contact earlier this week.

The Giants selected Fields in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 74th overall.
The Giants traded up with the Browns for the 74th pick in order to bring Fields into a wide receiver room that lost Wan'Dale Robinson to the Titans in free agency but features Malik Nabers (knee) and Darius Slayton. Fields spent the first four years of his college career with Virginia before transferring to Notre Dame in 2025, though he saw his production dip in his lone season with the Fighting Irish, finishing with 36 catches for 630 yards and five touchdowns across 12 games. Fields is a physical wideout with a 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame that he can use to his advantage against smaller corners, but he also displayed his speed with a 6.98-second three-cone time at the NFL Combine. He has the size and catch radius to serve as a competent WR2 for the Giants behind Nabers.
