49ers' Garret Wallow: Headed for multi-game absence

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Wallow will miss "at least a couple of weeks" due to a hamstring strain, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Shanahan seemingly ruled out the reserve linebacker through the 49ers' Week 8 bye, with Wallow expected to sit out Week 6 versus the Commanders as well as Week 7 in Atlanta. Wallow has accrued seven tackles (five solo) this season while seeing the majority of his playing time on special teams.

Wallow is in line to sign a one-year contract with the 49ers on Tuesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Wallow played seven games for the Texans in 2025 before he was waived in December. The 49ers swooped in and claimed him off waivers. Wallow played a vital role during the playoffs due to injuries ahead of him in the depth chart, handling 105 defensive snaps over two postseason games and recording 12 tackles (five solo) in the process. With Fred Warner (ankle) expected back in 2026, the 49ers are hoping Wallow can contribute on special teams.

Wallow was waived by the Broncos on Saturday after playing seven games with the team. He missed some time time earlier this season due to a hamstring injury but appears to be past the issue after suiting up in each of Denver's past two games prior to being cut. Wallow's health status has been up in the air after he picked up an ankle injury during training-camp practice Aug. 9, but it appears this issue ultimately was not serious. The 23-year-old recorded 23 tackles and one sack while playing 282 of his 451 total snaps on special teams over 17 games during his rookie campaign with the Texans last year, and he will likely play a larger reserve role at outside linebacker behind Neville Hewitt this season.
