  • Scottie Phillips: Receives tryout with Colts

Phillips (ankle) worked out with the Colts on Monday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports. Phillips sustained a season-ending ankle injury in Week 9 last year and was placed on injured reserve by the Texans in early May. However, he was let go with an injury settlement in mid-June and appears to be healthy since he's now working out for other teams.

Phillips (ankle) was waived from the reserve/injured list Thursday. Phillips initially reverted to injured reserve in early May, but he'll be free to seek out other opportunities ahead of training camp. • Texans' Scottie Phillips: Clears waivers

Phillips (ankle) was reverted to IR after clearing waivers Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports. Phillips suited up three times for the Texans last season, getting six carries for 13 yards and securing two of three targets for nine yards. His season was cut short due to an ankle injury in Week 9 against Miami that sent him to IR, and he never returned. The 24-year-old will be forced to miss the 2022 season, but he'll look to return strong in 2023 and earn an NFL roster spot.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: Won't return in Week 15

Phillips (ankle) won't be activated from injured reserve ahead of Sunday's game against Jacksonville, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports. Although Phillips will be forced to miss a fifth consecutive game due to his ankle injury, coach David Culley remains optimistic that the running back will be able to return prior to the end of the regular season. The 24-year-old logged six carries for 13 yards while securing two of three targets for nine yards across his first three appearances of the year.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: Not eligible to play until Week 14

Phillips (ankle) won't return from injured reserve ahead of Sunday's game against the Jets, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports. Since Phillips was placed on injured reserve Nov. 9, he won't even be eligible to practice until at least Nov. 30, making the Texans' Week 14 game against the Seahawks his earliest possible return date. Once healthy, Phillips will find himself in a less-crowded backfield after the Texans waived Phillip Lindsay on Tuesday.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: May not be done for season

Phillips (ankle) has a chance to retake the field this season, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports. Phillips is reportedly dealing with a high-ankle sprain. The Texans officially listed the running back with a leg injury when placing him on IR on Tuesday. Across three appearances with the Texans this season, Phillips has handled just six carries and drawn three targets.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: Done for day

Phillips (leg) will not return to Sunday's matchup against the Dolphins. Phillips logged one carry for two yards prior to exiting Sunday's game. His absence shouldn't have a major impact on the distribution of touches in the Texans' backfield.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: Questionable due to leg injury

Phillips (leg) is questionable to return for Sunday's game against the Dolphins. It remains to be seen if Phillips is able to return to action, though his availability won't have a significant fantasy impact since he plays a depth role in the Texans' backfield. David Johnson, Rex Burkhead and Phillip Lindsay should remain the top backfield options for Houston.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: Activated for Week 8

Phillips had five carries for 11 yards and caught two of three targets for nine yards in Sunday's 38-22 loss to the Rams. Those keeping track of Houston's backfield following the trade of Mark Ingram should count Phillips (15 snaps) as a winner. His eight touches/targets tied Rex Burkhead atop the four-man backfield. David Johnson (11 snaps) and Phillip Lindsay (eight) combined for six touches. As Tuesday's trade deadline nears, there could be a further shakeup.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: Records full practice Wednesday

Phillips (illness) was a full participant in practice Wednesday. Phillips was inactive in Week 4's loss to the Bills as he was dealing with a non-COVID illness. The running back still sits behind four veteran backs on Houston's roster. Expect Phillips to continue to fill a depth role for the Texans' running back room.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: Sidelined by illness

Phillips (illness) won't play in Sunday's game against Buffalo. Phillips is dealing with a non-COVID illness, which kept him out of practice all week. With a quartet of veterans above him in Houston's backfield depth chart, Phillips' absence is unlikely to have much of an impact on Houston's game plan against the heavily favored Bills.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: On 53-man roster

Phillips is one of five running backs to make Houston's 53-man roster out of camp, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports. Phillips led the Texans in rushing during the preseason, primarily facing reserve defensive units, but the team's decision-makers were impressed with his powerful running style. He averaged 4.28 yards after contact during the preseason, per Pro Football Focus. "That guy earned a spot on this roster," Houston head coach David Culley said. Phillips, who started on the practice squad last season and played sparingly in eight games, may not get many touches to start the season, but his story recalls that of the franchise's all-time leading rusher, Arian Foster -- both were undrafted free agents that started on the team's practice squad.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: Paces backs in preseason loss

Phillips rushed eight times for a team-high 73 yards in Saturday's 23-16 loss to the Buccaneers in preseason Week 3. Phillips finished the preseason as Houston's leading rusher, but it's probably not enough to unseat one of the four veteran backs ahead of him on the depth chart. Of the four, Rex Burkhead's spot is least secure, but the Texans might keep him and look to trade the 31-year-old to a team that needs a veteran back.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: Replaced as returner

Phillips played 16 snaps on special teams in Houston's season-ending loss to the Titans on Sunday. Phillips had been used as a fill-in kickoff returner in Week 15 but was replaced in subsequent weeks by Dontrell Hilliard. Phillips, who signed as an undrafted free agent prior to the season, was on the practice squad the first nine games before injuries led to a promotion to the active roster for the final seven. He's under contract through 2022 and could compete for a depth spot in what is expected to be a revamped backfield in 2021.

  • Texans' Scottie Phillips: Added to return game

Phillips had two carries for nine yards, caught his lone target for seven yards and returned five kickoffs for 96 yards in Sunday's 27-20 loss to Indianapolis. Phillips took on a larger role Week 15 as both Duke Johnson (neck) and C.J. Prosise (ankle) were inactive. The injuries elevated Phillips to third on the running back depth chart behind David Johnson and Buddy Howell. He also became the primary kick returner, a job that most recently was held by Prosise. This was fourth straight game he's been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster, and the touches were his first of the season.

Phillips was signed to Houston's active roster from the practice squad Wednesday, per the NFL's official transaction log. Phillips was elevated as an extra player from the practice squad for Sunday's win over the Patriots, and he exclusively played special teams. The 23-year-old should play a similar role now that he's receiving a longer look on the active roster.

  • Scottie Phillips: Let go by Texans

The Texans waived Phillips on Saturday. The undrafted free agent out of Mississippi regressed in his final collegiate season, registering 4.3 yards per carry and five touchdowns after posting respective marks of 6.1 and 12 in 2018. He's flashed potential before, so if he clears waivers, he could be a practice squad candidate.
