  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Benched in favor of Dalton

The Panthers decided Monday to bench Young and start veteran Andy Dalton beginning Week 3 versus the Raiders, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Panthers coach Dave Canales called Young "our quarterback" after Sunday's 26-3 loss to the Chargers, but after a disastrous rookie year, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick now will head to the bench just two games into his sophomore season. Carolina will turn to Dalton after an 0-2 start with the hopes of finding some type of rhythm on offense, with Young having thrown for just 245 passing yards combined, three interceptions and no touchdowns in that span. It's unclear whether the Panthers will consider giving Young another chance under center down the stretch.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Set to keep starting job

Head coach Dave Canales said after Sunday's 26-3 loss to the Chargers that Young will remain the team's starting quarterback heading into the Panthers' Week 3 matchup with the Raiders, David Newton of ESPN.com reports. "Bryce is our quarterback,'' Canales said. "We're going to continue to shore and fix the things we need to fundamentally, from a scheme standpoint, all those things."

After a rough rookie year, Young hasn't shown any sign of improvement in his sophomore campaign under the watch of Canales, who was hired as Carolina's head coach this offseason after he helped coax a career-best season out of Baker Mayfield while serving as Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator in 2023. The Panthers haven't been competitive in losses to the Saints and Chargers to begin the season, with Young completing just 31 of 56 pass attempts (55.4 percent) for 245 yards (4.4 YPA), no touchdowns and three interceptions while taking six sacks. Though Young is now just 2-16 as a starter through his first two NFL seasons, the Panthers aren't yet willing to pull the plug on the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, whom the franchise invested significant resources into acquiring. That being said, if the Panthers offense continues to sputter in Week 3 or in any future starts that may follow for Young, the clamor for veteran backup Andy Dalton to replace Young could grow louder.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Another forgettable performance

Young completed 18 of 26 passes for 84 yards with no touchdowns and one interception while adding one carry for six yards in the Panthers' 26-3 loss to the Chargers on Sunday.

Young's final line looks deceptively efficient, but with an average of only 3.2 yards per attempt, the high completion rate was meaningless. Young once again frequently looked indecisive and under duress, and he's now thrown for only 245 combined yards through his first two games while generating an 0:3 TD:INT. Head coach Dave Canales, who essentially was brought in to help turn Young's career around, figures to stick with the 2023 first overall pick for the time being, but heading into a Week 3 road battle versus the Raiders, the struggling quarterback looks no better than during his embattled rookie campaign.
