  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Opts for arthroscopic surgery

Fitzpatrick is scheduled to undergo a season-ending arthroscopic procedure on his right hip this week, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Three weeks ago, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reported that Fitzpatrick was unlikely to play again in 2021 due to the slow progress he was making in his recovery from the partial dislocation of his right hip he suffered Week 1, but his impending arthroscopic surgery makes his shutdown official. Fitzpatrick is hoping the surgery will allow him to return to full health by the early part of the offseason, but it's unclear if the 39-year-old will look to sign with another team or if he'll head into retirement. Taylor Heinicke has performed well enough for Washington this season, so the Football Team may not have any interest in bringing Fitzpatrick back for a second season -- at least not as a starter.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Still no timeline for return

Washington head coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday that Fitzpatrick (hip) has made progress but still isn't "way up there" in terms of positive news, with Rivera adding that he's been given no timetable for the quarterback's return, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports. Washington hasn't provided many updates on Fitzpatrick since he suffered a right hip subluxation Week 1, apart from occasional news regarding MRIs. The latest MRI took place last week and apparently didn't reveal enough progress for Fitzpatrick to start preparing for a return to practice. His prolonged absence will likely extend well into November and quite possibly December, with a Week 9 bye not marking the turning point some may have hoped for. Taylor Heinicke will make another start Week 10 against Tampa Bay, with Kyle Allen representing the other option at quarterback unless or until Fitzpatrick returns.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Slated for another MRI

Coach Ron Rivera said Monday that Fitzpatrick (hip) will have another MRI in two weeks, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Fitzpatrick wasn't expected to be ready to return until at least after Washington's Week 9 bye, and his MRI should give the team a better idea of his status. The 38-year-old doesn't appear to be particularly close to practicing, and Taylor Heinicke should continue to serve as the starting quarterback while Fitzpatrick remains on IR.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Hasn't gotten MRI yet

Coach Ron Rivera revealed Friday that Fitzpatrick (hip) hadn't yet undergone an MRI to evaluate his progress, John Keim of ESPN.com reports. A couple weeks back, there was talk of Fitzpatrick returning for Washington's upcoming Week 7 contest in Green Bay. That clearly won't happen, and the lack of an update makes it seem like Week 8 might be a stretch. After that, Washington has a Week 9 bye and a Week 10 home game against Tampa (Nov. 14), with the latter making some sense as the target date for a return. It is possible Fitzpatrick rejoins the team in a backup role, though Taylor Heinicke's recent performance trends toward the veteran reclaiming the starting gig.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Headed for injured reserve

Head coach Ron Rivera indicated Tuesday that Fitzpatrick (hip) will be placed on injured reserve in the near future, Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic reports. This is hardly a surprise given Fitzpatrick's 6-to-8 week timetable for the hip subluxation he suffered during Sunday's season opener versus the Chargers. The veteran was still involved in meetings Tuesday and figures to be available again at some point this season, but Taylor Heinicke is in line to take over the starting duties in his absence. Kyle Allen should serve as the top backup.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Will miss 6-to-8 weeks

Fitzpatrick (hip) is expected to be out for 6-to-8 weeks, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Fitzpatrick is expected to go on injured reserve Monday. Taylor Heinicke will start in Fitzpatrick's absence, and Kyle Allen will back him up. If Fitzpatrick comes back at the front end of his recovery timeline, he could be available as soon as Oct. 24 against the Packers, though it's possible the starting job could be Heinicke's for good by that time.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: MRI confirms hip subluxation

Fitzpatrick's MRI on Monday revealed a hip subluxation, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Per the report, Washington plans to place Fitzpatrick on injured reserve after an MRI confirmed his diagnosis, but it's not yet clear whether the issue will end his season. Taylor Heinicke will serve as the starting quarterback during Thursday's Week 2 matchup against the Giants and figures to remain the starter while the 38-year-old remains sidelined. Kyle Allen will be available as the primary backup, while the team added Kyle Shurmur to its practice squad Monday. Once Fitzpatrick officially is placed on injured reserve, the earliest he'll be able to return will be Week 5 against the Saints on Sunday, Oct. 10.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Facing lengthy absence?

Fitzpatrick (hip) could be out anywhere from a few weeks to the rest of the season, pending the results of Monday's MRI, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. The quarterback is believed to have suffered a subluxation of his right hip in the second quarter of Sunday's season-opening loss to the Chargers. He's scheduled for an MRI early Monday, but it isn't clear when Washington will provide an update on the results. Depending on what doctors see, Fitzpatrick could be back within a few weeks or could be facing a multi-month absence. Either way, he's a strong candidate to be placed on injured reserve, which would mean a minimum of three missed games. Taylor Heinicke figures to start at quarterback for Washington in Week 2, hosting the division rival Giants on Thursday Night Football.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Serious injury feared

Fitzpatrick may have a subluxation of his right hip and will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Fitzpatrick left the field early in the second quarter of Sunday's eventual 20-16 loss to the Chargers and didn't return. Washington is hopeful that the veteran signal caller didn't suffer a fracture, but the upcoming evaluation will provide more definite answers. In any case, it appears Fitzpatrick is poised for an absence of some type, which would thrust Taylor Heinicke into the starting lineup.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Ruled out of Sunday's game

Fitzpatrick (hip) won't return to Sunday's contest against the Chargers, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Fitzpatrick's last play before his departure was an incompletion early in the second quarter, leaving him 3-for-6 passing for 13 yards and one two-yard carry. With the graybeard out of commission, Washington has turned over the offense to Taylor Heinicke.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Week 1 starter, per report

Fitzpatrick is slated to start at QB for Washington in Week 1 and beyond, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Though the assignment hasn't been officially confirmed by the team, this is an expected outcome, considering the way things have played out during the preseason. The well-traveled veteran QB is in line to be backed up by Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Struggles to get offense moving

Fitzpatrick completed seven of his 13 pass attempts for 96 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions in Friday's preseason game against the Bengals. Fitzpatrick led four offensive series for Washington, though that resulted in only three points. However, he did connect with some of his top receivers for big gains, highlighted by a 28-yard completion to Logan Thomas and a 29-yard gain on a deep pass to Dyami Brown. Though Fitzpatrick has not been formally named the starter in Washington to begin the season, he has started both of the team's preseason games to this point and is presumably locked into the role.

  • Football Team's Ryan Fitzpatrick: Comfortable with new teammates

Fitzpatrick said he's already built chemistry with his pass catchers and expects to spread the ball around this season, NBC Sports Washington reports. Terry McLaurin will be the focal point of the passing game, but he should have more help around him this year after Washington acquired Curtis Samuel, Adam Humphries and third-round pick Dyami Brown in the offseason. On the other hand, Fitzpatrick was the only significant addition at quarterback, joining 2020 holdovers Taylor Heinicke, Kyle Allen (leg) and Steven Montez. Given those alternatives, the 38-year-old Fitzpatrick should have some margin for error in the starting role, especially early in the season while he's still getting the hang of a new system under offensive coordinator Scott Turner.

  • Dolphins' Ryan Fitzpatrick: Not expected to retire

Fitzpatrick plans to play football in 2021, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Retirement rumors have been circulating, but Rapoport suggests they aren't accurate. Fitzpatrick, an impending free agent, figures to search outside Miami for a starting job, as his performance in recent seasons has left little doubt he's one of the 32 best quarterbacks in the NFL. However, he's 38 years old and isn't a top-10 QB, so most teams with vacancies at the position figure to view him as a fallback option rather than a priority.

  • Dolphins' Ryan Fitzpatrick: Off of COVID-19 list

The Dolphins activated Fitzpatrick (illness) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. Considering the timing of this transaction, Fitzpatrick likely would have been unavailable in the wild-card round if the Dolphins had netted one of three wild-card spots in the AFC part of the postseason bracket. In his age-38 season, he played well when called upon, logging time in nine games and starting seven of them on his way to 2,091 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 69 percent passing. He enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, but considering his efforts and Tua Tagovailoa's struggles at times as a rookie, Miami may seek to bring back Fitzpatrick as a mentor for the young QB and as a proven commodity at the position.

  • Dolphins' Ryan Fitzpatrick: Not at practice Thursday

Fitzpatrick (undisclosed) wasn't spotted at practice Thursday, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports. It's unclear why Fitzpatrick missed practice Thursday, but the QB practiced Wednesday, so Wolfe indicates that it doesn't appear to be injury-related. If he's available for Sunday's game against the Bills, Fitzpatrick -- who finished up Miami's Week 16 win over the Raiders -- is slated to back up Tua Tagovailoa.

  • Dolphins' Ryan Fitzpatrick: Relieves Tua, leads miraculous win

Fitzpatrick entered Saturday's 26-25 win over the Raiders in the fourth quarter, completing nine of 13 pass attempts for 182 yards and a touchdown. Fitzpatrick took over for a timid Tua Tagovailoa (17-of-22 for just 94 yards) midway through the fourth quarter, and the veteran immediately displayed his signature tendency to push the ball downfield. His first drive led the Dolphins to a field goal, while his second resulted in a touchdown courtesy of a 59-yard sideline catch by Myles Gaskin. Dolphins fans will most remember Fitzpatrick's third and final drive of the night, however. The savvy veteran got the ball back with just 19 seconds remaining and Miami down two points, and he immediately connected with Mack Hollins on a deep shot to set up the game-winning field goal while simultaneously drawing a facemask penalty. According to Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald, coach Brian Flores announced Tagovailoa will start Week 17 against the Bills, though he could have a short leash with the Dolphins attempting to secure a playoff spot.

  • Dolphins' Ryan Fitzpatrick: Likely returning to backup role

Fitzpatrick is likely to serve as Miami's backup quarterback Sunday against the Bengals with Tua Tagovailoa (thumb) expected to start, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. After sitting out Miami's Week 12 win over the Jets with an injured left thumb, Tagovailoa practiced in a limited fashion Wednesday through Friday before taking a questionable designation into the weekend. As Rapoport notes, Tagovailoa still handled most of the reps with the first-team offense this week despite his limitations, so barring any setbacks in warmups, the rookie will be back under center Sunday. Fitzpatrick was serviceable in place of Tagovailoa last week, completing 24 of 39 attempts for 257 yards and two touchdowns.

  • Dolphins' Ryan Fitzpatrick: Fires three TDs against former club

Fitzpatrick completed 18 of 27 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions in Sunday's 24-0 win over the Jets. The veteran QB lit up one of his many former clubs in the first half, throwing all three of his TDs before the break, but neither offense could get much going in the second half -- the two squads combined for eight punts in the final two quarters. Fitzpatrick has a 10:7 TD:INT in six starts heading into the Dolphins' Week 7 bye, and he's likely played well enough to delay having to hand the No. 1 job over to rookie Tua Tagovailoa anytime soon.

  • Dolphins' Ryan Fitzpatrick: Lights up 49ers in win

Fitzpatrick completed 22 of 28 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns while gaining 16 yards on three carries during Sunday's 43-17 win over the 49ers. Fitzpatrick came through with one of the most efficient performances of his career as he averaged 12.5 yards per attempt en route to a new season high in passing yardage. He threw touchdown passes to three different receivers and avoided turning the ball over after throwing a pair of interceptions in last week's loss to Seattle. Fitzpatrick has now topped 300 passing yards in three of five games this season and has multiple touchdown passes with no interceptions in three games as well. He continues to surprise for what was supposed to be a futile Dolphins offense and will look to keep it up in a favorable matchup against the Broncos next Sunday.
