Though Week 3 of the 2017 college football season was not as jam-packed with marquee games as the first two, but it was no slouch with a Hail Mary finish in Florida-Tennessee, defending national champion Clemson flexing its muscles against the defending Heisman Trophy winner in Lamar Jackson at Louisville, and No. 4 USC needing double overtime to beat Texas in Pasadena, California.
CBS Sports was with you throughout the entire day updating this page with the best highlights, top headlines and most important moments from Week 3.

No. 4 USC survives tough Texas comeback in 2OT
After the way the Longhorns started the season, no one quite expected this. In what was a close contest for its duration, Texas took a late 17-14 lead over No. 4 USC thanks to a 17-yard touchdown pass from Sam Ehlinger to Armanti Foreman to cap a 14-play, 91-yard scoring drive. Texas had not scored an offensive touchdown prior to crossing the goal line with 45 seconds to play, and it held USC scoreless in the second half. The Longhorns trailed 14-7 at half after allowing two Sam Darnold touchdown passes but kept him in check for the duration of the game. USC would not quit, however, immediately responding with a long field goal drive to tie the game 17-17 and force overtime.
The teams traded touchdown in the first overtime period, and Texas coach Tom Herman chose not to go for two when given the opportunity despite basically every Twitter expert begging him to do so. Instead, the teams headed into a second overtime period where USC stripped Ehlinger at the goal line and responded with a 43-yard field goal from Chase McGrath to clinch the victory.
Vanderbilt makes history
It's not often that we get to talk about Vanderbilt doing noteworthy things in college football, but the Commodores made history in Saturday's 14-7 win over No. 18 Kansas State in Nashville. It's the first time since 1946 that they've topped a ranked nonconference opponent, and they did it in emphatic fashion -- by holding Wildcat quarterback Jesse Ertz to just 10-of-28 passing and picking him off twice. The Commodores have allowed 13 total points through three games -- all wins -- which includes a 28-6 win over a potent Middle Tennessee offense in Week 1. Are the Commodores contenders in the SEC East? That's remains to be seen. But it's been several generations since they've started out this hot.
Clemson pulls away from Louisville
Things got away from Louisville in its clash with Clemson. The score had been tied 7-7 after the first quarter, but Clemson began pulling away a bit in the second quarter, taking a 19-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. Then the Clemson defense dealt a heavy body blow to the Cardinals in the third quarter. The pick six was the first interception of the season for Lamar Jackson, and while you don't want to count the reigning Heisman winner or the Cardinals out, the way Clemson's defense dominated, it's was going to be difficult to overcome a 26-7 deficit. The Cardinals did not, falling 47-21 at home to the defending national champions.
Where are the fans?
Ole Miss is about to take on Cal in Berkley. Someone should tell the fans of both teams.
Mississippi State manhandles LSU
Mississippi State was more than a touchdown underdog at home against LSU on Saturday night, and it made the Vegas oddsmakers look foolish. The Bulldogs took it to the Tigers 37-7, and make no mistake about it, there's nothing fluky about the score. Mississippi State just beat LSU in every facet of the game as Nick Fitzgerald had four total touchdowns, and the Bulldogs defense held the LSU offense to only 270 yards. Making matters worse for LSU, it's had two players ejected for targeting -- and deservedly so. Mississippi State is the only team that looks like a contender to Alabama in the SEC West right now.
Weekly Saquon Barkley Highlight
It wouldn't be a college football Saturday without a Saquon Barkley highlight, now would it? Here's Barkley catching a short pass and taking it 85 yards to the house as he is known to do. This touchdown gave Penn State a 14-0 lead over Georgia State, and if we're being honest, that will probably be enough to seal the Penn State win tonight.
Feleipe Franks beats Tennessee with ridiculous Hail Mary
Are you serious?
QB of the week in the Big Ten is ... Alex Hornibrook?
Freshman running back Jonathan Taylor followed up 223-yard performance against FAU with 128 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, but the star for Wisconsin's offense in a 40-6 rout of BYU was sophomore quarterback Alex Hornibrook. BYU's defense is without a doubt the toughest Wisconsin has played this season, and Hornibrook completed 18 of his 19 pass attempts for 256 yards (13.5 yards per attempt) and four touchdowns. It is without a doubt the best performance of his young career and a great sign for the Badgers heading into conference play. The win also moved Paul Chryst to 9-1 in true road games as Wisconsin's head coach and extended the team's streak of non-conference wins to 11 games. Wisconsin will be off next week and back in action on Sept. 30 in Madison against Northwestern.
Return of AIRBHG for the Hawkeyes
Iowa has once again been hit with the injury bug at running back. According to the ESPN broadcast of the game, Hawkeyes running back Akrum Wadley sustained a minor ankle injury against North Texas. Additionally, running back James Butler suffered an arm injury. It didn't ultimately matter against the Mean Green with Iowa finishing off a 31-14 victory, but the Hawkeyes would obviously like to be at full strength as they get into Big Ten play.
TCU gets a Hail Mary to end the first half against SMU
The Battle for the Iron Skillet between TCU and SMU has been high-octane football. Nothing embodied the craziness of this rivalry like the Horned Frogs' Hail Mary to go up 28-22 at the half. It was a great play but, uh, hello, SMU? Is anyone going to make a play on the ball? TCU finished things off in the shootout for a 56-36 win over the Mustangs.
Purdue pounds Missouri
Despite being a near-touchdown favorite at home, Mizzou got wrecked by Purdue, which took a 28-3 lead into halftime. The Boilermakers outgained the Tigers by more than 300 yards in the first half, holding the hosts to just two first downs and eight minutes of possession. The Boilermakers coasted in the second half to a 35-3 win and one hell of a start for first-year coach Jeff Brohm.
Memphis takes care of UCLA at home in shootout
You don't just walk into the Liberty Bowl and expect to win, and UCLA found that out the hard way in a 48-45 loss to Memphis that was easily the game of the early slate. It was a quarterback battle between Josh Rosen and Riley Ferguson with Fergson's Tigers getting the huge nonconference win. Ferguson finished the day with 398 yards and six touchdowns, while Rosen had 463 yards and four touchdowns ... but two costly interceptions. One was a pick-six and the other was an ill-advised throw late in the game. Rosen has been excellent through three games, but it looks as though he feels the need to make every play. That came back to haunt him on Saturday.
Red zone issues hold Michigan back in win vs. Air Force
Michigan freshman kicker Quinn Nordin was worth all the extra effort Jim Harbaugh put in on the recruiting trail. Harbaugh famously showed up at Nordin's house at midnight when the NCAA recruiting dead period ended for a sleepover in efforts to steal the nation's top kicker from Penn State. Nordin committed to the Wolverines, and on Saturday he tied a school record with five field goals in the 29-13 win against Air Force. He's going to be a reliable piece of the special teams unit for the foreseeable future and that's a great thing for Michigan.
But the reason why Nordin had to get out there for five field goal attempts highlights another issue for Michigan: offensive execution in the red zone. Michigan did not have an offensive touchdown until Karan Higdon got loose in the final minutes as the offense was bleeding the clock, shaking off tackles and catching the sideline for a 36-yard score. Wilton Speight acknowledged the red zone issues in an interview with the Big Ten Network after the game and identified better execution as the number one goal for this offense moving forward.
Nebraska's pick sixes highlight struggles in Northern Illinois upset
Yes, you read that correctly. Pick-sixes. Plural. Nebraska could not have gotten off to a worse start against Northern Illinois. Quarterback Tanner Lee has had two interceptions returned for touchdowns. One came on a screen pass that was well read by the Huskies, while the other came on a floater after Lee got rocked attempting a pass. Technically, those are the two worst plays, but it hasn't been much better outside of that. The Cornhuskers could not protect Lee and there was no rhythm or urgency. The Huskies eventually prevailed 21-17 despite only passing for 128 yards in the contest.
Mason Rudolph's Heisman campaign is rolling
Jameis Winston's Heisman campaign got cranking at Pitt to open the 2013 season, and Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph appears to be following in his tracks. The senior signal-caller for the Cowboys had four first-half touchdowns and led his Pokes to a 59-21 win over the home-standing Pitt Panthers. Rudolph threw for nearly 500 yards with five touchdowns in the game and now has 11 touchdowns to one interception on the season. Here was his tremendously ellusive throw to put Oklahoma State up three touchdowns early in the game.
Texas A&M's struggles continue, but the Aggies pull away
You'd think that a home date against Louisiana-Lafayette would be no problem for Texas A&M. You'd be wrong. The Aggies were more than three-touchdown favorites over the Ragin' Cajuns, but needed a second-half surge to pull away 45-21. However, A&M was down a touchdown at the half and tied in the third quarter. Boosters everywhere are getting Facebook loaded up and ready to fire off an angry status update directed toward Sumlin.
