The Rangers transferred Gray (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Friday, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports. A shoulder injury sent Gray to the injured list in mid-August, and now that he's on the 60-day IL, he will have to wait until 2026 to take the mound again. The 33-year-old will finish the year with 12 earned runs allowed across just 14 innings out of the bullpen alongside a 12:6 K:BB. He is due to become a free agent this offseason.

President of baseball operations Chris Young said Tuesday that the Rangers are optimistic that Gray (shoulder) is dealing with symptoms that are more consistent with the neurologic version of thoracic outlet syndrome rather than the more significant vascular version, which would expedite the right-hander's return to the mound, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. "The primary symptoms normally are nerve-related," Young said of Gray's condition. "I don't want to put the cart before the horse because every patient is different. But our hope is that whatever it is, it's minor and, after 15 days, he'll be ready [to return from the injured list.] But we still have some diagnostics to get through before we have a clear idea on the prognosis." The Rangers deactivated Gray on Aug. 17 due to right shoulder nerve irritation, though the team had an underlying concern that the 33-year-old would be lost for the season since the symptoms he was experiencing were consistent with thoracic outlet syndrome, which could necessitate surgery. Gray was scheduled to visit a vascular specialist in Dallas last week, and assuming the doctor's evaluation of the right-hander's condition aligns with the early assessment by the Rangers' medical team, Gray could be cleared to address his shoulder issue with treatments such as Botox injections, which would numb the nerve and enable him to return after missing close to the minimum 15 days. Prior to his recent placement on the IL, Gray had spent the first four months on the shelf while recovering from a fractured wrist. He rejoined the Rangers in late July as a reliever and had struggled to a 7.71 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 14 innings over six appearances before the shoulder problem cropped up.

The Rangers placed Gray on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to right shoulder nerve irritation. Gray will continue to occupy a spot on the Rangers' 40-man roster upon clearing outright waivers Saturday, after no other team was willing to take on the approximately $3.1 million remaining on his $13 million salary for 2025. The right-hander ended up making a 2.1-inning mop-up appearance in Saturday's 14-2 loss to the Blue Jays and may have been pitching through the shoulder issue during the outing. According to Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com, manager Bruce Bochy said that Gray is dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome, which often necessitates a multi-month absence and is likely to end his season. Texas recalled right-hander Caleb Boushley from Triple-A Round Rock to replace Gray in the bullpen.

Gray went unclaimed after the Rangers placed him on outright waivers Thursday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. The Rangers were hoping another team would claim Gray and pay him the approximately $3 million he is owed over the rest of the season. Gray is a free agent after the season and is working as a long reliever. The Rangers are about to play 13 games in 13 days, so they may keep Gray around rather than pay him to go home, but they could also place him on waivers again before the Aug. 31 deadline for setting postseason rosters.

Gray (forearm) was awarded the win in Thursday's 2-1 victory over the Athletics after giving up one hit over two scoreless innings of relief. Activated from the 60-day injured list earlier Thursday after he had been on the shelf for the entire season due to the broken right forearm he suffered in mid-March, Gray was used out of the bullpen for just the fifth time in 228 career big-league appearances. Manager Bruce Bochy immediately threw Gray into the fire in a high-leverage spot, with the right-hander entering with runners on the corners with two outs in a 1-1 game in the top of the sixth. He induced a flyout from Tyler Soderstrom to end the inning, then retired the next five batters he faced before he was lifted after allowing a two-out single to Brent Rooker in the top of the eighth. Though Gray got stretched out to 3.2 innings and 61 pitches during his recent rehab assignment, the Rangers appear content to keep him in the bullpen, where the team has a greater need for impact arms after setup man Chris Martin (calf) recently landed on the IL.
