Diaz elected to become a free agent Thursday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Diaz had been booted off Atlanta's 40-man roster, and he will exercise his right to free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment. The former closer held an 8.15 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 17.2 innings at the big-league level in 2025 and might have to accept a minor-league contract this offseason.

Atlanta claimed Diaz off waivers from the Dodgers on Sunday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. The right-hander was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Thursday, and it's not a surprise he was claimed off waivers, given his previous success in the majors. Diaz has struggled to a 7.80 ERA in 15 outings in the big leagues with the Dodgers and Reds this season, and he hasn't been much better at the Triple-A level with a 6.08 ERA. He will report to the major-league club.

The Dodgers designated Diaz for assignment Thursday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Diaz lost his 40-man roster spot to make room for Ben Rortvedt, who was selected by the Dodgers on Thursday as Will Smith battles a hand injury. Diaz had a 4.15 ERA across 8.1 innings with the Dodgers since making his team debut July 22. He also had an 8.10 ERA across 10 innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City since being dealt by the Reds at the end of May.
