  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Making season debut Saturday

Horwitz is starting at second base and batting second for Saturday's game against Oakland.

Horwitz was recalled by Toronto on Friday and is now set to make his first big-league appearance of 2024. He was slashing .335/.456/514 with four home runs, 38 RBI and 44 walks over 259 plate appearances in Triple-A before his promotion. Horwitz appeared in 15 games for the big club in 2023, slashing .256/.341/.385 with one home run and seven RBI over 44 plate appearances. The 26-year-old will face off against Athletics right-hander Luis Medina on Saturday.

  • Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Goes deep Friday

Mountcastle went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a hit-by-pitch in Friday's 6-3 win over the Rays.

Mountcastle has homered three times over four games versus the Rays this season. The first baseman is batting .349 (22-for-63) with five long balls and 13 RBI over his last 16 contests. For the season, Mountcastle has a strong .281/.321/.509 slash line with 11 homers, 31 RBI, 34 runs scored, two stolen bases and 16 doubles over 57 games. He's shown modest growth from last year's .270/.328/.452 slash line, and he's also cut his strikeouts down from 22.8 percent to 21.2 percent year-over-year.

  • Ty France 1B | SD

Mariners' Ty France: Swats pair of doubles Friday

France went 2-for-3 with an RBI ground-rule double, another two-bagger, a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a run in a loss to the Royals on Friday.

France made up for missing out on the Mariners' first-inning fun by lacing a ground-rule double in the fourth to plate J.P. Crawford and extend Seattle's lead to 8-0 at the time. The 29-year-old has dialed in his stroke since the latter part of May and is swinging with more authority, generating a .304 average and .950 OPS over the last 14 contests with six extra-base hits (four doubles, two home runs) and 10 RBI during that span.

  • Jose Abreu 1B | HOU

Astros' Jose Abreu: Smacks second homer

Abreu went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-1 win over the Angels.

Abreu has gone a modest 3-for-17 over six games in June, but two of those hits have been homers. The first baseman has made limited progress at the plate since he was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land, but he's seeing steady playing time anyway. He's slashing .122/.171/.194 with two homers, six RBI and eight runs scored over 105 plate appearances in 2024.

  • Andrew Vaughn 1B | MIL

White Sox's Andrew Vaughn: Goes deep in win

Vaughn went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored in Friday's win over Boston.

Vaughn singled and scored in the fourth inning before knocking a solo blast in the sixth. After a 36-game homerless drought to begin the year, he's gone deep six times over his last 22 appearances, including two straight games. During that span, he's boosted his season OPS from .507 to .633 through 237 total plate appearances.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Recalled by Toronto

The Blue Jays recalled Horwitz from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday.

Since May 1, Horwitz is slashing .336/.435/.552 with three home runs, 23 RBI and 19 walks at Triple-A. He's played mostly at second base as of late, but the 26-year old has the versatility to also fill in at first base or the corner outfield. Toronto designated Cavan Biggio for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • J.D. Davis 1B | LAA

Athletics' J.D. Davis: Sitting again Friday

Davis is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against Toronto.

The righty-hitting Davis will sit for a second straight game as the Blue Jays send right-hander Chris Bassitt to the mound Friday. Over his last 15 games, Davis has slashed .250/.298/.386 with two home runs and three RBI over 44 at-bats. Tyler Soderstrom will start at first base and bat seventh in the series opener.

  • Dominic Smith 1B | ATL

Red Sox's Dominic Smith: Idle Friday

Smith is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Smith was busy in the Red Sox's 14-2 win Thursday, reaching base safely four times. He'll get the day off against lefty Garrett Crochet, with Bobby Dalbec filling in at first base and batting eighth.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Expected to join Toronto

Horwitz is expected to join the Blue Jays in Oakland on Friday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

He will presumably be added to the roster, although it's unclear what the corresponding transaction will be. Horwitz has been on fire of late at Triple-A Buffalo, going 16-for-36 with a pair of home runs. He's also played mostly second base over that stretch, and that could be a path to playing time for him with the big club if the Jays would prefer to use Davis Schneider more in left field. Horwitz could also fill in at first base if Vladimir Guerrero sees more time across the diamond at third.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Crushes seventh homer

Guerrero went 2-for-3 with a walk and a three-run home run in Thursday's win over the Orioles.

The first baseman opened the scoring by launching a cutter from Cade Povich over the right-field fence in the third inning. Guerrero has gone yard twice in the last four games, giving him seven homers on the year. Over the last 15 contests he's slashing .345/.433/.552.
