  • Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt: Homers, doubles in loss

Goldschmidt went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, two runs scored and three RBI in an 8-6 loss Thursday in Colorado.

Goldschmidt doubled and scored in the fourth and smacked a two-run homer in the eighth as the Cardinals attempted to mount a comeback. The 34-year-old didn't homer until the 19th game of the season, and Thursday's knock was his 27th of the season to go along with 31 doubles. Since the All-Star break, he's posted a .339/.424/.768 line with seven homers and 17 RBI in 15 games.

  • Garrett Cooper 1B | ATL

Marlins' Garrett Cooper: Exits as precautionary measure

Cooper was removed from Thursday's win over the Phillies as a precautionary measure due to calf tightness, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Cooper's calf tightened up while running to first base in the sixth inning Thursday, and he was replaced by a pinch hitter in the eighth. Although manager Don Mattingly called Cooper's exit precautionary, the team will monitor the 31-year-old ahead of Friday's series opener against Atlanta.

  • Dominic Smith 1B | ATL

Mets' Dominic Smith: Activated from IL, sent down

Smith (ankle) was activated from the 10-day injured list Thursday and was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

After missing three weeks with a right ankle sprain, Smith will remain with Syracuse after going 4-for-17 with an RBI and two runs scored over five games during his rehab assignment. The 27-year-old will likely be a top option to get called up to the big leagues down the stretch, though his .194/.276/.284 slash line over 134 at-bats in 58 games with the Mets this year leaves much to be desired.

  • Alfonso Rivas 1B | STL

Cubs' Alfonso Rivas: Called up Thursday

Rivas was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to serve as the 27th man for Thursday's Field of Dreams Game against the Reds.

Rivas was demoted to Iowa in late July but will rejoin the big-league club Thursday. The 25-year-old has a .232/.313/.316 slash line in 201 plate appearances this season and is likely to return to Triple-A after the contest.

  • C.J. Cron 1B | BOS

    Rockies' C.J. Cron: Resting Thursday

Cron isn't in the lineup Thursday against the Cardinals.

Cron is riding a five-game hitting streak in which he's slashed .318/.375/.682 with a home run, a triple, three doubles, eight RBI and four runs. He'll get a breather while Elehuris Montero starts at first base and bats sixth.

  • Josh Bell DH | MIN

Padres' Josh Bell: Scores twice during blowout

Bell went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks in Wednesday's victory over the Giants.

Bell has seen some struggles at the plate since being traded to San Diego at the deadline. His OPS since then sits at .644 over 32 plate appearances. However, when playing in his new home stadium his OPS jumps up to .851. Time will tell how significant these trends are as Bell settles into his new home, but it's reasonable to expect him to bounce back eventually.

  • LaMonte Wade 1B | CHW

Giants' LaMonte Wade: Out against lefty

Wade is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

The lefty-hitting Wade will find himself on the bench with southpaw Sean Manaea taking the hill for San Diego. Wade had made each of his last three starts as the Giants' designated hitter, but he may not have a clear path to a regular lineup spot now that Evan Longoria has returned from the injured list. The Giants could open up room in the corner outfield for Wade if they decide to cut bait on Luis Gonzalez, who enters Wednesday's contest having gone 0-for-17 over his last five starts.

  • Brewers' Rowdy Tellez: Sits against southpaw

Tellez isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Rays.

Tellez has started mainly against right-handed pitchers recently, and he'll get a breather Wednesday with southpaw Jeffrey Springs on the mound for the Rays. Keston Hiura will start at first base and bat sixth.

  • LaMonte Wade 1B | CHW

Giants' LaMonte Wade: Opens scoring Tuesday

Wade went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 7-4 loss to the Padres.

Wade has gone yard twice in his last three games, an encouraging uptick after he hit the same number of homers in 20 contests in July. The 28-year-old's first-inning blast was the Giants' only run until they rallied for three more in the ninth. Through 113 plate appearances, Wade is slashing .189/.310/.400 with five homers, 17 RBI and 11 runs scored. He's often been the odd man out in the Giants' lefty-heavy outfield when a southpaw starts for the opponent.

  • C.J. Cron 1B | BOS

Rockies' C.J. Cron: Drives in five

Cron went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, five RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 16-5 win over the Cardinals.

Cron opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the first inning. In the third, he plated another pair with a double as part of a nine-run frame. The first baseman has recorded five multi-hit efforts through nine games in August, going 12-for-40 (.300) with a homer and five doubles in that span. He's up to a .280/.330/.514 slash line with 23 long balls, 79 RBI, 62 runs scored and 26 doubles through 108 contests.
