    Voit went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, four RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 10-2 win over Minnesota.

    The 30-year-old got the start at first base with Anthony Rizzo resting, and Voit made a substantial case to earn more playing time. He knocked in a pair with a single in the first inning, then added another RBI on a ground rule double in the fourth and capped off the impressive game with a solo shot in the seventh. Voit has swatted seven homers with 26 RBI, 21 runs scored and five doubles through 172 plate appearances, but he's likely to play second fiddle to Rizzo down the stretch.

    Phillies' Rhys Hoskins: Not returning Friday

    Hoskins (groin) won't return from the 10-day injured list Friday, Daniel Guerrero of MLB.com reports.

    Hoskins took batting practice and fielded grounders ahead of Friday's game against the Padres, but he'll spend at least one more day on the injured list. However, manager Joe Girardi is optimistic that the first baseman will be back in action Saturday.

    Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Heads to bench

    Lowe will sit Friday against the Red Sox.

    Lowe finds himself on the bench for the second time in three days. Both occasions have come against lefties including Friday's starter Chris Sale, though Lowe had previously been in the lineup against three straight southpaws. Andy Ibanez will be the first baseman on this occasion, with Yonny Hernandez occupying Ibanez's usual spot at second base.

Goldschmidt's extended hot stretch dates back nearly two months, as he's slashing .342/.404/.540 with 11 doubles, seven home runs and 28 RBI in his last 40 games.

    Votto opened up the scoring for the Reds with a three-run homer off Nick Neidert in the fourth inning. The veteran is having a great month of August, batting .322 with six home runs and 20 RBI. On the season, he is slashing .281/.373/.574 with a team-leading 27 long balls, 79 RBI and 50 runs in 395 plate appearances.
