  • Alfonso Rivas 1B | STL

Pirates' Alfonso Rivas: Sits down Saturday

Rivas isn't in the Pirates' lineup Saturday against Minnesota, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Rivas will take a day to regroup after going 0-for-18 at the plate across his last seven games. Connor Joe will step in as Pittsburgh's first baseman and bat sixth.

  • Ryan Noda 1B | BAL

Athletics' Ryan Noda: Full rehab game on defense

Noda (jaw) started at first base and played a full game in Triple-A Las Vegas' win over Reno on Friday, going 0-for-2 with four walks and three runs.

As his final line implies, Noda was extremely patient at the plate and cashed in with runs on three of his trips on the bases. However, the most important aspect of his night was his ability to play a full game on defense, which seemingly sets the stage for a return to the big-league club at any time going forward.

  • Kyle Manzardo 1B | CLE

Guardians' Kyle Manzardo: Begins rehab assignment

Manzardo (shoulder) went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored for Cleveland's rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate on Friday.

Manzardo is beginning a rehab assignment after he had been out of action for over six weeks after sustaining an injury with Triple-A Durham while still in the Rays organization. The Guardians acquired Manzardo in the July 31 trade that sent Aaron Civale to Tampa Bay.

  • Brewers' Rowdy Tellez: Activated from IL

The Brewers activated Tellez (finger) from the injured list Saturday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

The Brewers said they wanted Tellez to heat up in the minors before they bring him back to the active roster, and with five hits in his last three games, Tellez has done just that. Now that he's healthy, the left-handed Tellez will likely start most often against right-handed starters with the switch-hitting Carlos Santana drawing starts against lefties. Abraham Toro was optioned to Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move.

  • Keston Hiura 2B | LAD

Brewers' Keston Hiura: Crushing Triple-A pitching

Hiura went 23-for-69 (.333) with six home runs, three doubles, 22 RBI and a 4:19 BB:K over his last 18 games with Triple-A Nashville.

Hiura has spent the entire season at the Triple-A level, but he is doing all he can to earn another trip to the big leagues. The Brewers have been hesitant to call him up because that would require opening a spot on the 40-man roster, but with the end of the campaign drawing closer they may change course at some point.

  • Nolan Schanuel 1B | LAA

Angels' Nolan Schanuel: Reaches twice in MLB debut

Schanuel went 1-for-4 with a walk and scored twice in Friday's loss to Tampa Bay.

After being recalled from the minors Friday, Schanuel was slotted into the leadoff spot in his big-league debut. He struck out in his first plate appearance but followed with an eight-pitch, two-out walk in the second that loaded the bases for Shohei Ohtani, who proceeded to hit a grand slam. Schanuel later singled in the seventh for his first MLB hit and came around to score on a Brandon Drury double. The rookie will likely get plenty of opportunity to play while up in the majors, at least for as long as C.J. Cron (back) remains on the injured list.

  • Anthony Rizzo 1B | NYY

    Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Showing improvement

Rizzo (concussion) has been feeling better and showing improved reaction times, and he hit in a batting cage Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

Rizzo landed on the injured list Aug. 3 due to post-concussion syndrome, and an initial timeline for a return was uncertain. Though it's still not clear when the first baseman may return to the field, he's at least confident that he will be back this season. Rizzo said Thursday that recent tests have shown that he's improving, explaining that "all signs are pointing towards quicker, faster, sharper [reaction times]." The veteran added that he hopes to be playing within the next few weeks, stating, "it's about getting back as fast as possible -- obviously as healthy as possible -- but no, shutting down, for me, is not an option, and it hasn't been discussed."

  • Triston Casas 1B | BOS

Red Sox's Triston Casas: Scratched with tooth infection

Casas was scratched from the lineup for Saturday's game against the Yankees with an infected tooth, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

The Red Sox have yet to announce a timeline for Casas' return, but if it's an issue that can be fixed with routine dental work, he's likely not looking at a long absence. Justin Turner will shift from designated hitter to first base in Casas' absence, with Adam Duvall entering the lineup as the DH.

  • Kole Calhoun 1B | CLE

Guardians' Kole Calhoun: On base three times in nightcap

Calhoun went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a run scored in a 4-1 win over the Tigers during the second game of Friday's doubleheader.

Neither team was able to produce much offense on the day -- the combined score across both games of the twin bill was 6-5 Guardians -- but Calhoun found a way to post solid numbers in the nightcap. With Josh Naylor (oblique) still lacking a target date for his return, Calhoun will continue to hold down a near-everyday role for Cleveland, and the 35-year-old is slashing .317/.378/.366 over his first 11 games with the club.

  • Garrett Cooper 1B | ATL

Padres' Garrett Cooper: Dealing with wrist issue

Cooper was removed from Friday's win over the Diamondbacks after jamming his wrist, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

It doesn't sound like a major issue, but it's possible Cooper won't be available to play during Saturday's doubleheader. That could lead to Matt Carpenter seeing some rare action in the field for the Padres.
