  • Alika Williams SS | PIT

Pirates' Alika Williams: Sent down Friday

Williams was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

After making the Opening Day roster, Williams has produced a .239 batting average with two triples, a double, two RBI, seven runs scored and a stolen base over 46 at-bats in 15 games with the Pirates so far in 2024, but he'll now head to Indianapolis. In his place, Nick Gonzales was recalled from Triple-A and will likely see most of his work at second base moving forward.

  • Bryson Stott 2B | PHI

Phillies' Bryson Stott: On bench Friday

Stott is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Miami.

Stott will defer to Whit Merrifield at second base with a lefty (Trevor Rogers) on the mound for Miami. Stott is slashing .250/.344/.389 through 128 plate appearances this season.

  • Rockies' Brendan Rodgers: Showing improvement

Rodgers went 1-for-4 with a run scored Thursday against the Giants.

Rodgers played his part in a seven-run fourth inning for Colorado by reaching base on a single and coming around to score. It was an otherwise unremarkable game, but he has at least one hit in 11 of his last 13 starts and has hit .313 (15-for-48) with a homer, five RBI and six runs scored in that span. Rodgers still has a poor .632 OPS for the season, but he is showing signs of life at the plate.

  • Nick Gonzales 2B | PIT

Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Recalled from Triple-A

The Pirates recalled Gonzales from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Gonzales has spent all season in Triple-A, slashing .358/.431/.608 with four homers and 19 RBI across 137 plate appearances. The 24-year-old infielder will give the Pirates another player capable of fielding multiple positions, and he could dethrone the struggling Jared Triolo as Pittsburgh's primary second baseman.

  • Tommy Edman 2B | LAD

Cardinals' Tommy Edman: Remains limited to tee work

Edman (wrist) remains limited to tee work, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

He has been cleared to up the intensity of his workouts, but Edman's progress remains, at best, slow, with no return date in sight. The switch hitter was transferred to the 60-day injured list earlier this week, so he's officially not eligible for activation until late May.

  • Brice Turang 2B | MIL

Brewers' Brice Turang: Logs three doubles in loss

Turang went 3-for-4 with three doubles, an RBI and a run scored during Wednesday's 6-4 loss to Kansas City.

Turang reached safely four times Wednesday, tagging Brady Singer, Nick Anderson and Tyler Duffey for doubles during the contest while also logging a walk. Turang has been one of the best second basemen in baseball this season, ranking third at the position with a .316 batting average while owning a .826 OPS and a 13.7 percent K Rate.

  • Reds' Santiago Espinal: Checks back into starting nine

Espinal will start at third base and bat fifth in Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Espinal saw a streak of six consecutive starts come to an end in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to Arizona, and before that, he enjoyed a stretch of 11 consecutive starts. He looks as though he could fall into regular playing time once again, as the Reds placed Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. Jeimer Candelario will move over from his usual spot at third base to cover Encarnacion-Strand's post at first base, opening up the hot corner for Espinal. Despite seeing plenty of usage in his utility role this season, Espinal has provided the Reds with underwhelming numbers (.169 average, one home run, four stolen bases, 12 RBI and five runs) across 90 plate appearances.

  • Gavin Lux SS | TB

Dodgers' Gavin Lux: Resting against lefty

Lux is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins.

The lefty-hitting Lux will take a seat in the series finale while the Marlins bring southpaw Ryan Weathers to the hill. Miguel Rojas will replace Lux at second base.

  • Nolan Gorman 2B | STL

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Hits bench against lefty

Gorman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets.

The lefty-hitting Gorman will hit the bench for the third time in the four games while the Cardinals have faced a steady diet of left-handed pitching of late. The right-handed-hitting Jose Fermin will man the keystone while Gorman sits against Mets southpaw Jose Quintana.

  • Jeff McNeil 2B | ATH

Mets' Jeff McNeil: Receiving breather Wednesday

McNeil is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

McNeil is likely just sitting out as part of a planned rest day, as he had started each of the Mets' last 30 games dating back to April 5. Joey Wendle will fill in for McNeil at the keystone.
