Cubs' Nico Hoerner: Still not starting

Hoerner (triceps) isn't starting Friday against the Pirates.

Hoerner will be held out of the lineup for an 11th consecutive game despite only being listed as day-to-day. He'll run the bases ahead of Friday's matchup but is otherwise expected to get a day off from baseball activities, per Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network. Zach McKinstry is starting at shortstop and leading off.

  • Ji-Hwan Bae 2B | NYM

    Pirates' Ji-hwan Bae: Promotion imminent

Bae is expected to have his contract selected by the Pirates on Friday, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.

Bae has spent the entire season with Triple-A Indianapolis and has a .291/.364/.432 slash line with eight home runs, 53 RBI, 81 runs and 30 stolen bases in 108 games. The 23-year-old primarily played the middle infield spots at Triple-A but has also seen some time in the outfield, and he'll receive his first taste of the majors down the stretch for Pittsburgh.

  • Cardinals' Brendan Donovan: Clubs first career grand slam

Donovan went 1-for-4 with a grand slam and a walk in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Padres.

Donovan went 0-for-9 over his previous three games before lifting a seventh-inning grand slam that gave the Cardinals their margin of victory. He's hit just five home runs this year, but three of them have come in his last 15 contests, a span in which he's added seven RBI and 12 runs scored. The rookie utility man is slashing .279/.390/.377 with 44 RBI, 56 runs scored and two stolen bases through 115 games overall.

  • Josh Rojas 3B | CHW

Diamondbacks' Josh Rojas: Sits third straight versus lefty

Rojas isn't starting Thursday against the Dodgers.

Rojas was already confirmed to be losing playing time due to his defensive woes, but it's not clear whether or not he's completely lost the primary role at third base. Nonetheless, he will be held out Thursday in favor of Sergio Alcantara, who will bat seventh.

  • Michael Chavis 2B | CIN

Pirates' Michael Chavis: Still on bench Thursday

Chavis isn't in the lineup Thursday against the Cubs, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Chavis has gone 0-for-12 with four strikeouts over the last four games, and he'll head to the bench for the third time in the last four matchups. Zack Collins is starting at first base and batting eighth.

  • Nico Hoerner 2B | CHC

Cubs' Nico Hoerner: Remains on bench

Hoerner (triceps) isn't in the lineup Thursday against Pittsburgh.

The Cubs have chosen not to place Hoerner on the injured list for now, but he'll be on the bench for a 10th consecutive game Thursday due to his triceps issue. However, he'll do work on the field ahead of the series opener versus the Pirates. Christopher Morel is starting at shortstop and batting ninth.

  • Thairo Estrada 2B | BAL

Giants' Thairo Estrada: Back in action Thursday

Estrada (elbow) is starting Thursday against Colorado.

Estrada wasn't in Wednesday's lineup due to an elbow injury, but he appeared off the bench and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. The 26-year-old is starting at the keystone and batting third in Thursday's series finale.

  • Rockies' Brendan Rodgers: Lands on injured list

Rodgers was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain Thursday, retroactive to Sept. 19.

Rodgers was slated to sit for a fourth consecutive game Thursday as he continues to deal with his hamstring injury, but the Rockies will choose to place him on the injured list to give him at least another week to recover. The 26-year-old recently underwent an MRI that revealed encouraging results, and the Rockies hope that he'll be able to return when he's first eligible Sept. 29, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Rodgers' move to the injured list makes room for Ezequiel Tovar on the Rockies' active roster.

  • Rockies' Brendan Rodgers: Still out Thursday

Rodgers (hamstring) is not in Thursday's lineup against the Giants, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

Rodgers, who has not played since Sunday due to a hamstring injury, recently underwent an MRI that showed encouraging results. However, he is still running out of time to make it back this season. Ryan McMahon is starting at second base while Elehuris Montero mans the hot corner.

  • Josh Rojas 3B | CHW

Diamondbacks' Josh Rojas: Defense costing playing time

Rojas was held out of Wednesday's start because he's slipped defensively, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

The lefty-hitting Rojas is usually a lineup staple against right-handed starters -- Dustin May was on the mound for the Dodgers -- but he was replaced at third base by Emmanuel Rivera, a right-handed batter. Rojas failed to convert three chances during an ugly eighth inning Tuesday, when the Dodgers plated five runs in a 6-5 Arizona loss. "I told him he has to work out here pregame, he's got to get back to the basic fundamentals and develop that feeling and flow and a confidence in picking up ground balls," manager Torey Lovullo said. Infield coach Tony Perezchica is working with Rojas on the infielder's technique. Rojas is tied at 32nd out of 36 qualified third basemen with a minus-7 outs above average.
