  • Bryson Stott 2B | PHI

Phillies' Bryson Stott: Heads to bench Friday

Stott is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox.

Sott has a .618 OPS through 19 games this season and will take a seat Friday as lefty Garrett Crochet starts for Chicago. Edmundo Sosa will handle the keystone and bat eighth.

  • Nicky Lopez 3B | CHC

White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Hit in loss

Lopez went 1-for-2 in a 2-1 win over Kansas City on Wednesday.

It's been a difficult start to the season for the 29-year-old, as Lopez's slash line sits at .167/.255/.167 through 49 plate appearances. The infielder has yet to tally an extra-base hit and he's been a liability on the rare occasions that he's gotten on base, having been thrown out four times this season without a successful steal. He signed a one-year, $4.3 million contract with the White Sox this offseason largely for his defense, but Lopez will need to add something on the offensive side of the ball if he wants to keep seeing regular playing time.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Activated, starting Friday

Massey (back) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at second base Friday versus the Orioles,

The 26-year-old opened the season on the injured list due to a back strain but is back with the Royals after he posted a 1.123 OPS over an eight-game rehab assignment. Massey could split playing time at the keystone with veteran Adam Frazier, but both hit left-handed so a traditional platoon isn't an option. Manager Matt Quatraro is more likely to ride the hot hand between them.

  • Luis Guillorme 3B | HOU

Braves' Luis Guillorme: Sits vs. lefty

Guillorme is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Texas.

The 29-year-old started the past two games at second base after Ozzie Albies (toe) was placed on the injured list, but the lefty-hitting Guillorme will sit Friday as southpaw Andrew Heaney pitches for the Rangers. David Fletcher will take over at the keystone and bat ninth.

  • Angels' Brandon Drury: Returns to lineup Friday

Drury (hamstring) will be the designated hitter and bat fifth for Friday's game in Cincinnati.

Drury missed three games with tightness in his left hamstring, but he's ready to at least hit Friday against one of his former teams. The 31-year-old has gotten off to a slow start at the plate for the Angels this season, putting up a .570 OPS with one home run in 16 contests.

  • Pablo Reyes RF | SD

Red Sox's Pablo Reyes: Starts at third base

Reyes started at third base and went 0-for-4 in Thursday's 5-4 loss to Cleveland.

Reyes filled in for the injured Rafael Devers (knee) and committed a costly error that allowed one of three unearned runs to score. Reyes also couldn't get a ball out of his glove quick enough to start a 5-4-3 double, which allowed another run to score. Per Ian Browne of MLB.com, the Red Sox are hoping to avoid having to put Devers on the injured list, which suggests a fill-in will be needed for more than just Thursday's contest. Reyes and Bobby Dalbec are the primary candidates to play third base should Devers need an stint on the IL.

  • Marcus Semien 2B | NYM

Rangers' Marcus Semien: Homer, three hits in win

Semien went 3-for-6 with a solo homer, a double and an additional run scored in Thursday's 9-7 victory over Detroit.

Semien led off the afternoon with a homer off Kenta Maeda, his third longball of the year, before adding two more hits later in the contest as he wound up a triple shy of a cycle. The 33-year-old Semien has gotten off to another strong start this season while serving as Texas' primary leadoff man, slashing .286/.355/.464 with 17 RBI and 16 runs scored through his first 93 plate appearances.

  • Cubs' Miles Mastrobuoni: Optioned to Iowa

The Cubs optioned Mastrobuoni to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

He was able to crack the Opening Day roster with Patrick Wisdom on the injured list before the season began. Mastrobuoni appeared in just eight games and only reached base once on a walk across 13 plate appearances. In a corresponding move, Wisdom was activated from the 10-day injured list.

  • Luis Garcia 2B | WAS

Nationals' Luis Garcia: Steals two bags in Wednesday's win

Garcia went 1-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases in Wednesday's win over the Dodgers.

The 23-year-old stole a career-high nine bases last year, and Garcia is already 3-for-3 on the basepaths to begin 2024. After looking like his starting job at second base might be in jeopardy this spring, Garcia's come out of the gate slashing .294/.321/.490 through 16 games with seven doubles, a homer, four runs and eight RBI. He's also been working his way into a better spot in the batting order against right-handers, and he hit cleanup Wednesday. If he stays in the heart of the lineup, Garcia's counting-stat production should pick up.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Expected back Friday

Massey (back) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Anne Rogers reports.

Nick Loftin was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday and Massey is expected to be activated in a corresponding move ahead of the Royals' weekend series against the Orioles. Massey has been out all season with a lower-back injury but slashed .382/.417/.706 with two home runs in eight rehab games between Omaha and Double-A Northwest Arkansas. The 26-year-old should share playing time at second base with Adam Frazier once activated.
