  • Yankees' Oswaldo Cabrera: Idle Friday

Cabrera is out of the lineup Friday against Tampa Bay.

Cabrera will give up third base duties to Jon Berti, who will bat ninth against the Rays. In 130 plate appearances, Cabrera is slashing .256/.300/.397 with four homers and two stolen bases.

  • Grae Kessinger SS | NYM

Astros' Grae Kessinger: Back from injured list

Kessinger (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Kessinger spent the minimum 10 days on the injured list recovering from shoulder discomfort before being activated Friday. In a corresponding move, Jacob Amaya was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land. Kessinger made just one start with the Astros in April before his IL stint.

  • Joseph Ortiz 2B | MIL

Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Launches third home run

Ortiz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 7-1 win over the Cardinals.

Ortiz has now homered in consecutive games and has registered an extra-base hit in five of his last eight contests. He continues to crush right-handed pitching this season, slashing .327/.424/.618 in that split with three home runs, eight runs scored and 10 RBI in 66 plate appearances. The 25-year-old will continue to jockey with Oliver Dunn for playing time at the hot corner, but Ortiz's recent hot streak could give him the upper hand.

  • Oswald Peraza 3B | LAA

Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Rehab moving to Double-A

The Yankees transferred Peraza (shoulder) from Single-A Tampa to Double-A Somerset on Friday.

Peraza went 2-for-5 with a homer, two walks and three runs in two games at Single-A and will now move his rehab assignment to the Double-A level. The 23-year-old suffered a shoulder injury in late February and was shut down in early March, so he likely still needs a significant number of at-bats in the minors before being cleared to come off the injured list.

  • Royals' Maikel Garcia: Three hits, two RBI in win

Garcia went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Angels.

The 24-year-old singled in the top of the third inning before coming around to score on a Vinnie Pasquantino home run. Garcia later added two doubles to give him his first three-hit performance of the season. The third baseman has now hit safely in four consecutive games and in six of eight to open the month of May, tallying four RBI and four runs scored over that latter stretch. However, he hasn't stolen a base since April 30.

  • Jose Ramirez 3B | CLE

Guardians' Jose Ramirez: Continues power surge

Ramirez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the White Sox on Thursday.

Cleveland was held scoreless until Ramirez belted a 409-foot solo shot in the eighth inning. The All-Star third baseman has gone deep three times over his past five games, pushing his total to eight homers on the season. He's slashing just .238/.282/.450 but ranks fifth in the majors with 31 RBI while adding 25 runs and five stolen bases.

  • Gio Urshela 3B | MIN

Tigers' Gio Urshela: Begins rehab assignment

Urshela (hamstring) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.

Urshela has been on the injured list since April 20 due to a strained right hamstring, and he has now been given the go-ahead to test his hamstring in a competitive setting. It's unclear how long he will remain in the minors, but it's possible the Tigers wait to activate him until Monday ahead of their upcoming series against the Marlins.

  • Niko Goodrum 2B | SD

Angels' Niko Goodrum: Claimed by Angels

The Angels claimed Goodrum off waivers from the Rays on Thursday.

Goodrum was DFA'd by the Rays on Monday after going 3-for-16 with six strikeouts across nine games with Tampa Bay. The 32-year-old utility man will likely remain in Triple-A as he moves into the Angels organization, though he will claim a spot on the 40-man roster. Kelvin Caceres (lat) was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake and placed on the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Zack Short SS | HOU

Braves' Zack Short: Headed to Atlanta

Atlanta acquired Short from the Red Sox on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations.

He will slide right into the role fellow utility infielder Luis Guillorme vacated after being traded to the Angels earlier Thursday. Short, who will turn 29 later this month, is a career .169/.262/.299 hitter over parts of four major-league seasons and has managed just one base hit through 19 plate appearances in 2024 between his time with the Mets and Red Sox.

  • Matt Chapman 3B | SF

Giants' Matt Chapman: Receiving rest day

Chapman is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rockies, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Chapman will take a seat for the first time since April 20 in what likely amounts to a maintenance day as the Giants and Rockies wrap up their series with a day game after a night game. Wilmer Flores will fill in at the hot corner for Chapman, who has seen his performance both in the field and at the plate take a step back in 2024 since signing with the Giants in March. He enters Thursday's contest with a .601 OPS, the lowest mark of any season in his career by more than 100 points (.717 in 2021 with Oakland).
