  • Ramon Urias 3B | STL

Orioles' Ramon Urias: Dealing with bruised thumb

Urias was scratched from Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers due to a bruised right thumb, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Urias suffered the injury while fielding batting practice. Manager Brandon Hyde downplayed the significance of the issue, and it doesn't appear likely to hinder Urias' availability for Opening Day. He's projected to fill a utility role along Baltimore's infield to start the campaign.

Orioles' Ramon Urias: Scratched from lineup Thursday

Urias was scratched from the Orioles' lineup ahead of Thursday's Grapefruit League game against Detroit, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports.

It's unclear why Urias was removed from the lineup in favor of Daz Cameron, but the team will likely provide an update in the near future. The 28-year-old infielder has slashed just .214/.333/.286 over 33 plate appearances this spring.

  • Edmundo Sosa 2B | PHI

Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Likely needed more at third base

Sosa is likely to be needed more at third base with Rhys Hoskins (knee) possibly facing a lengthy IL stay, Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Sosa had been slated for a super-utility role, but the Phillies might have to regularly play Alec Bohm at first base to account for the loss of Hoskins, who went down with an ugly-looking left knee injury Thursday in camp. Sosa has played all around the diamond defensively this spring while delivering a stellar .457/.558/.857 batting line with four home runs and two stolen bases through 43 plate appearances. That kind of power can't be counted on in the regular season, but he does have great speed.

  • Yoan Moncada 3B | LAA

White Sox's Yoan Moncada: Expected to return Friday

Moncada (rib) is expected to return to Cactus League action Friday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.

Moncada suffered a bruised rib in Team Cuba's loss to Team USA in the World Baseball Classic last Sunday, but he's feeling better now after some rest and treatment. The 27-year-old should be at third base for the White Sox on Opening Day as he looks to bounce back from a highly disappointing 2022 campaign.

  • Kyle Farmer 3B | ATL

Twins' Kyle Farmer: Likely to be busy early on

Farmer is a candidate for starts at second base while Jorge Polanco (knee) is out to begin the season, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.

Between the early season absences of Polanco and Alex Kirilloff (wrist) and with Jose Miranda (shoulder) not yet ready for everyday playing time at third base, Farmer will likely be busy early on in the season. He should play every day against lefties after batting .286/.350/.528 versus them last season and figures to see action against some righties, too.

  • Jace Peterson SS | ARI

Athletics' Jace Peterson: Checks out fine after HBP

Peterson checked out fine after taking a pitch off his right hand Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Peterson was removed from the A's spring game against the Cubs a half-inning after the HBP occurred, but he only sustained a minor bruise. The 32-year-old is set to open the 2023 campaign handling third-base duties in Oakland.

  • Nick Senzel 3B | LAD

Reds' Nick Senzel: Making spring debut Wednesday

Senzel (toe) will make his Cactus League debut Wednesday against the Padres, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

Senzel isn't starting the game but will come in off the bench as the Reds ease him into action. The outfielder has been brought along slowly this spring following a pair of surgeries on a fractured toe. He'll remain in extended spring training while the Reds head north before eventually starting a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville. Senzel is expected to play center field, third base and possibly some second base while on his rehab assignment.

  • Jace Peterson SS | ARI

Athletics' Jace Peterson: Removed Wednesday after HBP

Peterson was removed from Wednesday's Cactus League against the Cubs an inning after he was hit by a pitch, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Peterson stayed in to run the bases, but he was unable to continue on the defensive end. The Athletics should provide an update on the 32-year-old before the end of Wednesday's contest.

  • Nick Senzel 3B | LAD

Reds' Nick Senzel: Could make Cactus debut Wednesday

Senzel (toe) is listed as a reserve on the Reds' roster for Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Padres, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The Reds haven't confirmed that Senzel will definitely play in the game, but he does appear poised to make his Cactus League debut. Senzel has been slow-played this spring while working his way back from a couple surgeries on his fractured toe and seemingly hasn't progressed as quickly as hoped. However, he's game-ready now, and while he'll begin the season on the injured list, a return at some point in April looks likely.

  • Mets' Eduardo Escobar: Little impact at plate

Escobar has gone just 2-for-20 at the plate this spring with zero extra-base hits.

The veteran is still penciled in as the Mets' starting third baseman to begin the season, but Escobar hasn't done much in camp to suggest he's going to rebound significantly from the tepid .240/.295/.430 slash line he posted in 2022. If he has another sluggish start at the plate, the door could open for Brett Baty to take the job at the hot corner early in the season.
