  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Blasts another homer

O'Hoppe went 1-for-5 with a solo home run Sunday in a 10-inning loss to Toronto.

O'Hoppe gave the Angels what appeared to be a secure six-run lead with his 424-foot solo shot in the fourth inning. The rookie backstop has taken advantage of near-everyday playing time that became available when Max Stassi (hip) opened the campaign on the injured list, as he is tied for the team lead with nine RBI. Among big-league catchers, O'Hoppe is tied with Will Smith for the lead in homers with three on the campaign.

  • Max Stassi C | SF

    Angels' Max Stassi: Making progress

Stassi (hip) has been able to participate in some baseball activities lately, Angels manager Phil Nevin told MLB.com Sunday.

Stassi is making some progress with the hip injury which has forced an IL stint to start the season, but it's not clear when he might be ready for a rehab assignment. Also complicating a potential return date is the catcher dealing with an ongoing family emergency. It's possible Stassi could be back before the end of April, but that's hardly set in stone.

  • Orioles' Adley Rutschman: Leads offense in loss

Rutschman went 4-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Yankees.

The Orioles had just six hits Sunday, and Rutschman supplied four of them, including his eighth-inning solo shot. He also has a five-hit game to his name this season, though he went just 5-for-27 between his two biggest contests of the young campaign. The 25-year-old catcher is slashing .389/.476/.556 with two homers, six RBI and five runs scored through nine games.

  • Cal Raleigh C | SEA

Mariners' Cal Raleigh: Belts first homer

Raleigh went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run, a walk and an additional run in an extra-innings loss to the Guardians on Sunday.

Raleigh's 375-foot shot to right with Ty France aboard in the second inning opened the scoring on the afternoon. The power-hitting backstop has already laced four of his eight hits for extra bases, and Sunday's homer helped him snap a brief 1-for-13 skid that had encompassed his previous three games.

  • Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk: Not in lineup Sunday

Kirk is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Kirk will get a day of rest Sunday while Danny Jansen gets the start behind the plate. The 24-year-old has gotten off to a slow start with the bat to begin 2023 with a .182/.308/.182 slash line over 22 at-bats in six games.

  • Twins' Christian Vazquez: Gets Sunday off

Vazquez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros.

Vazquez looks to be getting some routine maintenance for Sunday's matinee after he caught the first two contests of the series with Houston, going 2-for-6 with two walks, two RBI and two runs between those games. Ryan Jeffers will form a battery with starting pitcher Tyler Mahle in the series finale.

  • Jake Rogers C | DET

Tigers' Jake Rogers: Back on bench Sunday

Rogers is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox.

Rogers had started behind the plate in three of the Tigers' last four games, going 2-for-11 with a home run and three RBI. Though he still appears to be the Tigers' nominal No. 2 backstop behind Eric Haase -- who will catch Sunday's game -- Rogers should have the chance to play more often than most backup catchers around the league thanks to Haase's ability to fill in at designated hitter or in the corner outfield.

  • Rays' Francisco Mejia: Hits bench after two-hit day

Mejia is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Mejia will take a seat after he turned in his most productive game of the season in Saturday's 11-0 win. While making his fourth start in the Rays' first eight contests, Mejia went 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and two runs. He looks like he'll continue to split time behind the dish with Christian Bethancourt -- who gets the start Sunday -- in relatively equitable fashion.

  • Connor Wong C | BOS

Red Sox's Connor Wong: Getting more time over McGuire

Wong will start at catcher and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Tigers, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Though he appeared to be in the short side of a platoon at catcher with the lefty-hitting Reese McGuire to begin the season, Wong seems to have at least temporarily emerged as the Red Sox's preferred backstop against both right- and left-handed pitching. Wong will be starting again with the Tigers bringing a lefty (Matthew Boyd) to the hill for the second straight day, but the 26-year-old catcher also started over McGuire on two of the last four occasions Boston opposed right-handed pitchers. Wong is hitting just .125/.176/.188 through 17 plate appearances, but he seems to be earning extra time on the basis of McGuire's inability to control the run game. Despite logging only 36 innings behind the dish this season, McGuire has allowed a league-leading 14 stolen bases and hasn't thrown out a would-be base stealer.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Losing time to Connor Wong

McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

The lefty-hitting McGuire will sit for the fifth time in seven games, with three absences coming against lefty pitchers and two coming against righties. McGuire has posted an .819 OPS over a small sample of 14 plate appearances, but his inability to control the run game appears to be the major reason why manager Alex Cora has favored Connor Wong as Boston's top backstop. Despite being behind the plate just 36 innings on the season, McGuire has allowed an MLB-leading 14 steals and has yet to throw out a baserunner.
