  • Red Sox's Christian Vazquez: Gets breather

Vazquez is not in the lineup Thursday against the Rays, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Vazquez will head to the bench for Thursday's series finale after starting the previous two games behind the dish and going 1-for-9 with a double and three strikeouts. In his place, Sandy Leon is starting at catcher and hitting ninth.

  • Austin Nola C | COL

Mariners' Austin Nola: Slugs fourth homer in loss

Nola went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and three runs overall in a loss to the Rangers on Wednesday.

The rookie continues to feast on big-league arms, with his multi-hit night qualifying as his fourth in the last six games. Nola wrapped up July with a flourish, going 10-for-23 with four doubles, one triple, Wednesday's homer and four RBI over the last six games of the month. His positional versatility -- Nola has logged time at catcher and each infield position except shortstop thus far -- is helping to afford him consistent playing time, but his outstanding work with the bat (.356/.405/.630 across 80 plate appearances) certainly is helping cement his case as well.

  • James McCann C | ARI

White Sox's James McCann: Takes seat Thursday

McCann is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mets.

Welington Castillo will check in behind the plate in the series finale after McCann caught the prior two days. McCann maintains the top spot on the catching depth chart, but he's fallen into an offensive tailspin so far in the second half. Over 15 games since the All-Star break, McCann is batting .133 while striking out in 42.9 percent of his plate appearances.

  • Mitch Garver DH | SEA

Twins' Mitch Garver: Resting for day game

Garver is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Marlins.

Garver will retreat to the bench after going 2-for-5 with two runs, three RBI and his 20th home run of the season in Wednesday's 7-4 win. Jason Castro will spell Garver behind the plate as the Twins and Marlins wrap up their series with a day game.

  • Indians' Roberto Perez: Goes deep twice in win

Perez went 2-for-3 with two home runs, a walk and four RBI in Thursday's 10-4 win over the Astros.

Perez kicked off the Tribe's scoring for the night with a three-run blast off rookie Jose Urquidy in the second inning before connecting on his 18th long ball of the season in the sixth. The two-homer performance ended a 15-game skid in which Perez contributed just three extra-base hits (all doubles) while batting just .167. Perez's elevated strikeout rate (27.5 percent) may continue to make him prone to prolonged cold spells, but the unforeseen power spike he's enjoyed this season has already made him a good value for those who roster him.

  • Jose Trevino C | CIN

Rangers' Jose Trevino: Joining big-league club

Trevino will be called up from Triple-A Nashville on Friday, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.

Trevino has a .229/.266/.340 slash line in 39 games with Nashville this season, but he'll nonetheless receive the promotion in favor of Tim Federowicz, who was designated for assignment. The Rangers have used a heavy rotation behind the plate in 2019, so Trevino could end up seeing a fair share of starting opportunities despite his Triple-A struggles.

  • Jake Rogers C | DET

Tigers' Jake Rogers: Homers, scores three times

Rogers went 1-for-2 with two walks, a solo home run and three runs scored in Wednesday's 9-1 win over the Angels.

Two games in the books, and two impressive performances from Rogers, who hit his first MLB home run Wednesday. The 24-year-old catcher could get a long look down the stretch as the Tigers take stock of what they have heading into next season.

  • Max Stassi C | SF

Angels' Max Stassi: Sent to Angels

Stassi was sent from the Astros to the Angels in exchange for Rainier Rivas and Raider Uceta on Wednesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

Stassi became expendable when the Astros picked up Martin Maldonado in a trade from the Cubs earlier in the day. He'll back up Jonathan Lucroy in Los Angeles, a role that suits him well, as he owns a playable but unexciting .218/.298/.354 slash line over parts of seven seasons in the big leagues.

  • Matt Thaiss C | BOS

Angels' Matt Thaiss: Not starting Wednesday

Thaiss is not in the lineup Wednesday against Detroit.

After going 3-for-27 in his first nine career games, Thaiss has gone 8-for-17 with four homers over his last five contests. David Fletcher starts at third base in his absence, with Albert Pujols at first.

  • Austin Nola C | COL

Mariners' Austin Nola: Laces pair of doubles

Nola went 3-for-5 with two doubles in a win over the Rangers on Tuesday.

Nola continues to demonstrate that the hot start to his big-league career is no fluke, as Tuesday's multi-hit effort was his fourth in the last eight games. The rookie has also begun squaring up on the ball more consistently the more he's played, as he's posted eight of the first 10 extra-base hits of his nascent career since the All-Star break.
