Gomes hit a two-run home run -- his 15th of the year -- off reliever Heath Hembree and later slashed his 24th double off Hector Velazquez. Gomes is hitting .326 with three homers and six RBI in his last 12 games and has secured a hit in six straight games. Overall the backstop is slashing .266/.313/.445 with 46 RBI and 50 runs in 107 games this year.

Vazquez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Indians, Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston reports.

Vazquez will head to the bench after starting Thursday's game, and has started back-to-back contests only once since returning at the start of September. Sandy Leon will start behind the plate and bat ninth for the Red Sox.

Jansen is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Rays, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Jansen hits the bench for the third time in the last four games as the Blue Jays appear to be protecting the young catcher down the stretch. The 24-year-old had a hot start when he was first recalled in August, but is slashing .171/.256/.371 over 35 at-bats in September.
