Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal went 0 for 3 at the plate Tuesday while drawing his first career start at first base in his team's 6-0 loss to the Giants.

Grandal saw his first career at first base last season, moving from behind the plate to play the final five innings of a game on May 31 of last year. He got through Tuesday's game just fine at the position but couldn't get anything going on offense. Grandal has hit .236/.333/.345 with one home run and five RBI in 55 at-bats.

Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco will likely need the entirety of his 15 days to recover from a hamstring strain, manager Bryan Price told MLB.com Saturday.

"It just isn't something that's going to be better in three-to-five days, it's probably every bit of 10-14," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We really can't go without a second full-time catcher."

Mesoraco felt he could have been able to catch and hit after suffering the injury, but said he would have been unable to run the bases with the injury. He said this is the worst hamstring injury he has suffered in his career.

"This one, it's so hard to tell right now because it's so early," Mesoraco said. "In the next couple of days, we'll see how it responds to the treatment and everything. My goal is to be back on the 16th day. I want to be back as soon as I possibly can be. That's my focus at this point."

The Reds officially placed catcher Devin Mesoraco on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring prior to Saturday's game against the Braves.

Mesoraco suffered the injury the previous night against Atlanta while running the bases. He was off to a fast start, slashing .468/.509/.787 with three homers and 13 RBI in 47 at-bats. The team recalled catcher Tucker Barnhart from Triple-A Louisville to replace his roster spot.

Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco was removed from Friday's game against the Braves because of a strained left hamstring, MLB.com reports.

Mesoraco singled in the seventh and suffered the injury while running the bases. He reached second on a wild pitch, but was replaced by Brayan Pena in the seventh inning. Before leaving the game, he went 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.

Mesoraco is off to a fast start, slashing .468/.509/.787 with three homers and 13 RBI in 47 at-bats. His status remains up in the air for Saturday's game against Atlanta.

Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud has struggled to open the season, and people are starting to take notice, according to Baseball Prospectus.

A scout recently gave a pretty unfavorable view of the 25-year-old. "I've seen him miss some fastballs, almost like he has a blind spot," the scout said. It's slider bat speed and he just doesn't look very strong." The scout also had some tough things to say about d'Arnaud's defense behind the plate.

d'Arnaud joined the club a few years ago as the centerpiece of the R.A. Dickey deal. He has a .197 average over 157 at-bats in the majors. While that's far too early to give up on a player with his talent, it's clear that the transition hasn't been easy.

Giants catcher Hector Sanchez has a well-deserved reputation as a light-hitting reserve, but he turned that script around with a huge performance Wednesday against the Rockies.

Sanchez, who entered the game with just six career home runs in 164 games, slugged two to help the Giants to a 12-10 win. He went deep for a solo home run to give the Giants a lead in the eighth, and then came up with a grand slam in the 11th to give the Giants the win.

He finished the game 2 for 6 with five RBI, the latter of which is a career-high total. He is now hitting .161/.206/.419 on the season.  

Diamondbacks backup catcher Tuffy Gosewisch finally connected for his first hit of the season Tuesday against the Cubs.

Gosewisch's only hit happened to be his first home run of the season. Though, it didn't make much of an impact in a 9-2 loss. Gosewisch connected for a solo home run off Jason Hammel in the sixth inning Tuesday.

Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado will not appeal his five-game suspension for his role in Sunday's brawl with the Pirates. He will begin serving his suspension Tuesday against the Padres and be eligible to return Monday at St. Louis.

Major League Baseball announced suspensions and fines Tuesday for four players involved in Sunday's brawl between the Pirates and Brewers.

Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado was suspended five games and outfielder Carlos Gomez was suspended three games. Pirates outfielder Travis Snider was given a two-game suspension, while catcher Russell Martin was given a one-game suspension.

All the players were fined. Gomez is appealing his suspension, while Maldonado is undecided, per FOX Sports. No word yet on what the Pirates players will do.
