Diamondbacks' Jose Herrera: Heading back to minors

Herrera will be optioned to Triple-A Reno on Thursday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

With the D-backs claiming Seby Zavala off waivers from the White Sox on Wednesday, Herrera will be sent back to the minors as the club has decided against carrying three catchers on the active roster. The 26-year-old is slashing just .202/.296/.245 across 113 plate appearances in the majors this year and will likely remain in Triple-A to conclude the season.

  • Gary Sanchez C | MIL

Padres' Gary Sanchez: Has fractured wrist

Padres manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that Sanchez has a fractured wrist, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

With less than a month left in the season, a fractured wrist likely spells the end of Sanchez's 2023 campaign. He slashed .220/.292/.504 across 257 plate appearances upon joining the Padres in late May. Luis Campusano figures to take over as San Diego's primary catcher for the remainder of the year.

  • Dodgers' Austin Barnes: Clears concussion protocol

Barnes cleared concussion protocol Wednesday after getting hit by a backswing Tuesday versus the Marlins, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Barnes has a contusion on the side of his head where Nick Fortes accidentally struck him with his bat in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday, but the 33-year-old backup catcher could return to action as soon as Thursday. Will Smith is behind the plate for the Dodgers on Wednesday.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Takes seat Wednesday

Alvarez is absent from the lineup Wednesday at Washington.

Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a homer, a double, three RBI and three runs scored in the Mets' defeat of the Nationals on Tuesday, but Omar Narvaez will handle the catching duties for New York in Wednesday's series finale.

  • Seby Zavala C | LAD

Diamondbacks' Seby Zavala: Claimed by Diamondbacks

Zavala was claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Zavala was designated for assignment by the White Sox earlier this week but has found a new home and goes to a team in playoff contention. The 30-year-old is out of options, so he'll head straight to the major-league club.

  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Swipes bag Tuesday

Smith went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's loss to Miami.

Smith started the game as the Dodgers' DH but shifted to his usual spot behind the plate in the eighth inning as a replacement for Austin Barnes, who exited the contest after getting hit in the head on a backswing. Smith had already contributed a run-scoring single and a stolen base at that point, extending a modest three-game hitting streak. The All-Star catcher has been heating up of late, slashing .333/.375/.467 with a homer, two runs and two RBI over his past seven games.

  • Austin Wynns C | ATH

Rockies' Austin Wynns: Starting at catcher

Wynns is in the Rockies' lineup Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Elias Diaz is getting another breather Wednesday, so Wynns will get his second start in four games.

  • Elias Diaz C | KC

Rockies' Elias Diaz: Takes seat Wednesday

Diaz is not in the Rockies' lineup Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Diaz will sit for the second time in four games, though the catcher has appeared in every game since Aug. 22. Austin Wynns will start for the 32-year-old and bat ninth.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Goes on concussion injured list

Bailey was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list Wednesday.

Bailey suffered the concussion during Tuesday's loss to the Cubs when he was involved in a collision at the plate with Jeimer Candelario. He will be eligible to return next week, but as is the case anytime a concussion is involved, it's difficult to project when Bailey might be ready. Blake Sabol and Joey Bart will handle the catching duties for the Giants while Bailey is sidelined.

  • Joey Bart C | PIT

Giants' Joey Bart: Coming up from Triple-A

Bart was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.

Patrick Bailey suffered a concussion Tuesday and will be sidelined at least for the next week. Bart could start at catcher against lefties while Bailey is out, with Blake Sabol seeing most of the action versus righties. The 2018 first-round pick has a lowly .634 OPS over parts of four major-league seasons.
