Mets' Tomas Nido: Behind plate for series finale

Nido will start at catcher and bat seventh Wednesday against the Reds, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Nido will pick up his third start in four games after going 3-for-8 with a double and two runs. James McCann -- who is getting a breather Wednesday -- still sits atop the depth chart and is expected to receive the bulk of the starts behind the plate moving forward, despite Nido's recent spike in playing time.

Mets' James McCann: Gets breather Wednesday

McCann isn't starting Wednesday against the Reds, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

McCann will get a day off after he went 4-for-7 with a home run, three RBI and two runs across the last two games. Tomas Nido will start behind the plate and bat seventh.

  • Padres' Victor Caratini: Resting for Game 1 of twin bill

Caratini is out of the lineup for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader with Atlanta.

Webster Rivas will catch Chris Paddack in the opening game, but Caratini should be behind the dish for the nightcap, when the newly recalled Reiss Knehr makes his second start of the season. Caratini, who is holding down a .658 OPS on the season, will likely shift back to the No. 2 catcher role in the coming days with Austin Nola (knee) closing in on a return from the 10-day injured list.

  • Alex Jackson C | MIN

Braves' Alex Jackson: Activated and optioned

Atlanta reinstated Jackson (hamstring) from the 60-day injured list Wednesday and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Though Travis d'Arnaud (thumb) is expected to remain sidelined through mid-August, Jackson wasn't needed to provide catching depth at the big-league level with Atlanta having acquired a pair of veteran backstops (Stephen Vogt and Kevan Smith) while the 25-year-old was on the shelf. Jackson will likely share time behind the plate at Gwinnett with William Contreras, who was demoted shortly before the All-Star break after struggling at the dish during his time as Atlanta's No. 1 catcher. Jackson enjoyed a productive rehab assignment at Triple-A, going 17-for-60 (.283 average) with four home runs, seven doubles and 15 RBI in 14 games.

  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Plays hero with walkoff homer

Smith drilled a walkoff three-run home run in his only at-bat against the Giants on Tuesday.

The backstop got a scheduled breather Tuesday, as Austin Barnes started the contest behind the plate for Los Angeles. However, Smith was summoned to pinch hit with two runners on base and the Dodgers down a run in the ninth inning. After looking at a strike on Tyler Rogers' first pitch, Smith sent the following offering 419 feet over the left-field wall to give the Dodgers the big win. Smith has been one of the best offensive catchers in baseball this season with a .264/.369/.475 slash line, 12 home runs and 42 RBI. Over his past four games, he has gone 6-for-12 with two homers and 10 RBI.

  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Receives breather Tuesday

Smith is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Giants, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

After starting the past two contests, Smith will head to the bench for Tuesday's game. Austin Barnes will work behind the plate in his absence.

  • Pirates' Jacob Stallings: Out of Tuesday's lineup

Stallings is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.

Stallings is 5-for-12 with a grand slam in four games since the All-Star break and will head to the bench for the second time in the past three days. Michael Perez will work behind the plate in his place.

  • Austin Nola C | COL

Padres' Austin Nola: Could be activated over weekend

Manager Jayce Tingler said Tuesday that Nola (knee) could be activated from the 10-day injured list during the upcoming weekend series against the Marlins, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Tingler didn't provide a specific day for when the backstop could be reinstated, but the update suggests he could be activated as soon as Thursday's series opener. Nola has been out since May 24 with a left knee sprain, and he figures to resume sharing the catching duties with Victor Caratini when he returns.

  • Omar Narvaez C | HOU

Brewers' Omar Narvaez: Sits against southpaw

Narvaez will sit Tuesday against the Royals.

Narvaez has started just twice against a lefty all season, so it's no surprise to see him on the bench against Mike Minor here. Manny Pina starts behind the plate in his absence.

  • James McCann C | ARI

Mets' James McCann: Socks eighth homer

McCann went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Monday's 15-11 extra-innings win over the Reds.

The veteran catcher didn't enter the contest until the eighth inning, when he pinch hit for Tomas Nido, but McCann still supplied a full game's worth of production. The homer was his first in July and eighth of the year, but he's still putting together a decent month, slashing .278/.381/.361 over his last 13 games with four RBI and four runs.
