Indians catcher Yan Gomes is currently hitting .310 with seven home runs and nine doubles over just 155 at-bats. The 26-year-old, acquired in the Esmil Rogers deal over the winter, has been even better lately, hitting .385 with a .980 OPS since July 1.

The main problem with Gomes is his playing time -- a .385 average over 12 games is nice, but Gomes hit just one home run in that span, with five runs scored. Still, as a second catcher in a 12-team Roto league, Gomes isn't hurting a team. And with these great numbers in part-time play, Gomes has proven his worth as someone who can handle several positions (first base, catcher, DH, and even left field and third base) in case someone gets injured. The bonus if that happens would be Gomes retianing his catcher eligibility for Fantasy purposes. 

Gomes makes for a nice, cheap keeper acquisition in deeper leagues right now (he's already earned catcher eligibility for 2014), and has some value in deeper leagues for the rest of 2013 as a second catcher. With the Indians making a postseason push, we may see Gomes spell Carlos Santana behind the plate as we get deeper into the season. 

Major League Baseball announced Monday Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal will not receive any additional discipline after he already served a 50-game suspension as a result of his violation of the joint drug prevention and treatment program stemming from his connection to the Biogensis investigation. Grandal is already out for the rest of the season because of knee surgery.

FOX Sports reports among the players accepting 50-game suspensions for their connection to the Biogenesis investigation are Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta, Phillies reliever Antonio Bastardo, Mets infielder Jordany Valdespin , Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera, Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli, Mariners catcher Jesus Montero, Mets outfielder Cesar Puello, Astros reliever Sergio Escalona, Padres reliever Fautino De Los Santos, Yankees outfielder Fernando Martinez and free-agent pitcher Jordan Norberto.

The report also states Athletics starting pitcher Bartolo Colon, Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal and Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera will be dealt no additional discipline. Also, no violations were found against Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez and Orioles infielder Danny Valencia.

The Royals have placed catcher Salvador Perez on the seven-day concussion disabled list, the Kansas City Star reports.

Perez was diagnosed with a "low grade" concussion and spent the night in the hospital undergoing tests. His response to those tests will likely determine how much time he will miss. Perez was hitting .278/.309/.382 on the season.

Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco played a big part in his team's 8-3 win over the Cardinals Saturday, going 2 for 4 with two home runs and three RBI. It was Mesoraco's first multi-homer game of the season.

Mesoraco has hit .257/.316/.414 with eight home runs and 32 RBI in 222 at-bats.

The Diamondbacks selected the contract of catcher Tuffy Gosewisch from Triple-A Reno Thursday after placing starting catcher Miguel Montero on the disabled list with a back injury. Gosewisch hit .285 with six home runs and 30 RBI in 66 games for Reno. 

With John Buck possibly set to leave the team for a few days with his wife due to give birth Thursday, Mets manager Terry Collins could call on top catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud to join the team for a series. According to ESPN, Collins said he would consider d'Arnaud as an option to join the team for a few days, though he made it clear even if he does get the call it would just be until Buck is able to return.

d'Arnaud has been playing in Gulf Coast League games while rehabbing from a broken foot, and is expected to resume play at Double-A Binghamton Wednesda. 

Mets catcher John Buck's wife is slated to give birth in the coming days, so a paternity leave is likely. If that happens, manager Terry Collins said prospect Travis d'Arnaud, who is rehabbing a broken foot in the minors, could be promoted to fill in while Buck is gone for a few days.

The Padres promoted catcher prospect Austin Hedges from Class A Lake Elsinore to Double-A San Antonio, MLB.com reported Wednesday. Hedges, who is considered the Padres' No. 2 prospect by MLB.com, hit .263 with one triple, three home runs, 21 doubles and 26 RBI in 65 games for Lake Elsinore.

Mets catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud is expected to move his rehab to Double-A Binghamton this week, manager Terry Collins told MLB.com Tuesday. d'Arnaud finished 1 for 4 with a double Tuesday for the Gulf Coast Mets. He is hitting .318 through six rehab games.
