Tigers' Jake Rogers: Idle for day game

Rogers is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Angels.

Rogers started at catcher both of the past two nights, so he'll be getting a breather Thursday as the Tigers wrap up their series against the Angels with a day game. Dillon Dingler will get the nod behind the plate.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Returns from injured list

The Giants activated Bailey (oblique) from the 10-day injured list. He'll start at catcher and bat sixth in Thursday's game against the Brewers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Bailey missed the minimum 10 days with a strained oblique and will return without having gone on a rehab assignment. The switch-hitting catcher had been slashing just .057/.089/.075 in August prior to the injury. Andrew Knapp was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Pedro Pages C | STL

Cardinals' Pedro Pages: Sitting out Thursday

Pages is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Padres.

Pages started Wednesday's contest but has now yielded to Ivan Herrera at catcher in three of five games since Herrera was recalled from Triple-A Memphis. Playing time between the two should be split fairly evenly while Willson Contreras (finger) is on the shelf.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Getting afternoon off

O'Hoppe is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Tigers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

O'Hoppe had started behind the plate in each of the past five contests, so he'll be given a breather Thursday as the Angels and Tigers wrap up their series with an afternoon game. Matt Thaiss will step in at catcher, forming a battery with right-hander Jack Kochanowicz.

  • Bo Naylor C | CLE

Guardians' Bo Naylor: Smacks homer in win

Naylor went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a hit-by-pitch in Wednesday's 7-5 win over the Royals.

Naylor's seventh-inning homer sparked a rally for the Guardians. He has gone 3-for-10 over his last five games, with two of the hits in that span being solo shots. The catcher is up to 11 homers in 101 contests this season, matching his total from 67 games a year ago. He's added a .206/.267/.368 slash line, 37 RBI, 35 runs scored and four stolen bases in 2024.

  • Brewers' William Contreras: Caps rally in win

Contreras went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Giants.

Contreras completed a five-run rally for the Brewers when he took Giants starter Kyle Harrison deep in the fifth inning. Contreras had been in a small rut, going 0-for-11 with three walks over his previous three games. The catcher is up to 18 homers, 76 RBI, 83 runs scored, five stolen bases and a .283/.359/.464 slash line through 128 contests this season.

  • Padres' Kyle Higashioka: Swats 16th homer

Higashioka went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Cardinals.

Higashioka has two home runs over his last five games, and he's hit four long balls while batting .224 over 17 contests in August. The catcher is up to 16 homers in just 66 games this season. He's added a .228/.275/.518 slash line with 43 RBI, 26 runs scored and one stolen base over 212 plate appearances. Higashioka is likely to continue sharing the catching duties with Luis Campusano, though a hot stretch at the plate for either backstop could lead to a corresponding uptick in playing time.

  • Jonah Heim C | ATH

Rangers' Jonah Heim: Sitting down for nightcap

Heim isn't in the Rangers' lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the White Sox.

Heim went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two strikeouts during the early game Wednesday, and he'll get a breather for Game 2 while Carson Kelly catches for Jack Leiter and bats eighth.

  • Korey Lee C | CHW

White Sox's Korey Lee: Resting in Game 2

Lee isn't in the White Sox's lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Rangers.

After going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the early game Wednesday, Lee will get a breather during the nightcap. Chuckie Robinson will start at catcher instead while batting ninth.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Set to return Thursday

Giants manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that Bailey (oblique) is expected to be reinstated from the 10-day injured list Thursday when first eligible, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The 25-year-old has been sidelined since Aug. 18 due to an oblique strain, but he'll rejoin the active roster Thursday after being sidelined for the 10-day minimum. Bailey was slumping in August prior to the injury with a .057/.089/.075 slash line in 15 games, but he'll attempt to close the month strong now that he's healthy.
