  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Idle Wednesday

Moreno is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees.

Moreno will get a respite after he was behind the dish for both of the last two days, with Tucker Barnhart checking in for him at catcher. The young backstop is hitting .211 with four runs and five RBI through Arizona's first six games.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Receives rest day

Langeliers is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox.

Langeliers had started behind the plate in each of Oakland's last three games and slugged his first home run of the season Tuesday, so he'll presumably just be getting a breather Wednesday in a day game after a night game. Kyle McCann will handle the catching duties for the Athletics in the series finale.

  • White Sox's Martin Maldonado: Gets rest day

Maldonado is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus Atlanta.

The veteran backstop will get a breather for the day game after he caught all nine innings of Tuesday's 3-2 win. Korey Lee will step in behind the dish as a replacement for Maldonado, who has gone hitless with one walk through his first 12 plate appearances of 2024.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Making another start

McGuire will be at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game versus the Athletics, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

After yielding to Connor Wong in two of the first three games, McGuire has now started three of the last four contests. While it's not surprising Boston's catching situation has been a timeshare, it's a bit of a surprise it has leaned in McGuire's favor thus far. McGuire is off to a 5-for-12 start at the dish.

  • Connor Wong C | BOS

Red Sox's Connor Wong: Sitting out Wednesday

Wong is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Athletics, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

He started two of the first three games at catcher but has now yielded to Reese McGuire in three of the last four contests. Wong is 4-for-12 with an RBI and a 5:0 K:BB in his first three games this season.

  • Matt Thaiss C | BOS

Angels' Matt Thaiss: On bench again Wednesday

Thaiss is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.

Even with the Angels playing a day game after a night game, No. 1 catcher Logan O'Hoppe will remain behind the dish for the second day in a row while Thaiss sticks on the bench. Though he was able to secure the backup catcher job coming out of spring training, Thaiss doesn't look as though he'll play much more than once or twice a week while O'Hoppe is healthy. Through the Angels' first six games, Thaiss has made only one start.

  • Alfredo Duno C | CIN

Reds' Alfredo Duno: Skipping complex ball

Duno will begin the year with Single-A Daytona, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

This is a noteworthy assignment, as Duno, the Reds' top 2023 international signee, only played in the Dominican Summer League last year as a 17-year-old. Typically those players, especially if they are catchers or pitchers, will spend the next year in the complex league, but Duno is getting a big vote of confidence from the Reds. The massive 6-foot-2, 210-pound backstop hit .303 with six home runs, a 19.5 percent walk rate and a 21 percent strikeout rate in 45 DSL games. Duno could get too big for catching by the time he is in his mid-20s, so keeping his weight in check in the coming years will be arguably the most important aspect of his development, as his bat looked ready for impact last year.

  • Rene Pinto C | PHI

Rays' Rene Pinto: Taking seat Wednesday

Pinto is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Rangers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The Rays and Rangers are playing a day game after a night game, so Pinto will get a breather while Ben Rortvedt handles the catching duties. Pinto is 3-for-13 with a couple of doubles in the early going this season.

  • Padres' Luis Campusano: Tear continues

Campusano went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in during Tuesday's 5-2 loss to St. Louis.

Campusano submitted his third three-hit game of the young campaign, pushing himself into an eight-way tie for the second most hits in MLB (12). The 25-year-old is well on his way to proving that his .319 average in 2023 wasn't a fluke. Instead, he's slashing .400/.400/.600 and with a 3.3 percent strikeout rate in 30 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Goes yard again

Contreras went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer Tuesday against the Padres.

For a second straight night, Contreras got to jog around the bases, this time after tagging Yu Darvish for a two-run home run to plate Brendan Donovan and give the Cardinals a 3-2 sixth-inning lead. Although Contreras has yet to log a multi-hit game, he's generated three runs scored and driven in four en route to a .176/.333/.529 slash line.
