Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Alvarez (illness) is not in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Royals, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Per Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle, manager Dusty Baker said that Alvarez is still feeling ill after leaving Monday's game in the eighth inning with an upset stomach. The slugger may have a chance to pinch hit Tuesday and can be considered day-to-day to return to the starting nine.

  • Ji-Man Choi 1B | NYM

Rays' Ji-Man Choi: Out of lineup against lefty

Choi is not starting Tuesday against the Orioles and left-hander John Means, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Choi scored a pair of runs while reaching base three times Monday, but he'll now get a chance to rest against the southpaw. Jordan Luplow is set to man first base and bat eighth.

  • Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: On bench for afternoon game

Stanton will sit for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox.

The Yankees will likely give a handful of their regulars a rest in one of the two games, and giving one to Stanton makes sense considering his health history. Joey Gallo will rest his legs as the designated hitter in his absence.

Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Leaves game with upset stomach

Alvarez was removed from Monday's loss to the Royals in the top of the eighth inning due to an upset stomach, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports.

Alvarez went 1-for-3 with an RBI to begin Monday's contest, but he was replaced by a pinch hitter in the top of the eighth. Manager Dusty Baker revealed after the contest that the 24-year-old had dealt with an upset stomach throughout the game, which prompted his early exit. Whether Alvarez is able to return Tuesday remains to be seen.

  • White Sox's Yermin Mercedes: Hitting homers at Triple-A

Mercedes went 5-for-5 with two home runs Sunday for Triple-A Charlotte.

Mercedes announced his retirement on July 21 and then changed his mind a day later. His decision didn't impact him at the plate, as he's hitting .287 with a .826 OPS and six home runs in 20 games since July 23. With Yasmani Grandal returning soon from a knee injury, however, it doesn't look like there's a good chance of Mercedes returning to the majors in the near term.

  • Astros' Michael Brantley: Launches homer in loss

Brantley went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Angels.

Brantley clubbed his eighth homer of the season to put Houston up a run in the third inning, but the Astros' dominant lineup was elsewise quieted, going hitless with runners in scoring position. It's been a relatively quiet season for Brantley, who continues to hit with regularity (.332) but has just 39 RBI through 94 games.

  • J.D. Martinez DH | NYM

Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Goes deep again Sunday

Martinez went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk in Sunday's 6-2 win over Baltimore.

The 33-year-old got a start in left field Sunday as the Red Sox continue to be cautious with Kyle Schwarber's return from a hamstring injury. Martinez put the Red Sox ahead with his first-inning blast, and the lead never flipped after that. He's homered in consecutive contests to give himself 23 for the year, along with 79 RBI, 76 runs scored, 32 doubles and a .293/.359/.545 slash line through 476 plate appearances.

  • Ji-Man Choi 1B | NYM

Rays' Ji-Man Choi: Sitting against lefty

Choi is out of the lineup Sunday against the Twins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Choi returned to the lineup Saturday after dealing with a sore hamstring, and he'll move back to the bench Sunday with left-hander Charlie Barnes pitching for Minnesota. Jordan Luplow will work at first base in his place for the series finale.

  • Luis Torrens DH | NYM

Mariners' Luis Torrens: Drives in five Saturday

Torrens went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and five RBI in a victory versus Toronto on Saturday.

Torrens drove in over half of Seattle's runs in the contest, with the big blow coming on a seventh-inning three-run homer that gave the Mariners a lead they did not relinquish. His eighth-inning two-run double provided some final insurance for Seattle and helped Torrens establish a single-game career high with five RBI. He has reached base safely in five of his past six games, going 5-for-19 over that stretch.

  • Shohei Ohtani DH | LAD

Angels' Shohei Ohtani: Clubs 39th homer

Ohtani went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a stolen base Saturday in a loss to the Astros.

The two-way star pushed his league-leading homer total to 39 with a solo shot leading off the Angels' half of the first inning. For good measure, he swiped his 17th bag of the campaign following a third-inning single. Ohtani and Fernando Tatis are the only players in baseball this season with at least 30 homers and 15 stolen bases.
