Giants' Brandon Belt: Won't start Sunday

Belt (knee) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Belt, who already spent time on the injured list earlier this season with right knee inflammation, is dealing with renewed tenderness in his knee. He'll be on the bench for the second game in a row, but the Giants remain hopeful that his injury isn't anything that will keep him out through the All-Star break. Even if the knee issue hadn't cropped up in Saturday's 3-1 win, the lefty-hitting Belt may have been due to receive Sunday's game off anyway with southpaw MacKenzie Gore taking the hill for San Diego.

Giants' Brandon Belt: Could return Sunday

Belt exited Saturday's game against the Padres with knee tenderness, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Belt exited after sprinting down the first base line on an infield single. The exit was seemingly precautionary, as manager Gabe Kapler told reporters after the game that he hopes Belt will be in Sunday's lineup.

Giants' Brandon Belt: Early exit Saturday

Belt exited Saturday's game against the Padres after running to first base on an infield single, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.

Belt sprinted down the line and was safe on the play, but he was immediately visited by manager Gabe Kapler and the training staff. There has been no official diagnosis, though presumably Belt is dealing with discomfort in his lower body.

  • Justin Turner DH | CHC

Dodgers' Justin Turner: Gets Saturday off

Turner will sit Saturday against the Cubs.

Turner is riding a seven-game hit streak and is hitting .471/.500/.824 with four homers in his last 10 contests, but the veteran will get a day off here in order to stay fresh. Max Muncy slides to third base in his absence.

  • Brewers' Andrew McCutchen: Stelas sixth base

McCutchen went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored in a 4-3 win over the Pirates on Friday.

McCutchen made two stolen base attempts in the game and was caught stealing once. He now has six stolen bases in 11 attempts for a 54.5 percent stolen base success rate. The 35-year-old veteran may not be given the green light to run very much in the future if he is unable to steal more efficiently. After his two-hit game, McCutchen is slashing .254/.321/.375 over 69 games this season.

Giants' Brandon Belt: Homers off bench Friday

Belt went hit a two-run home run in his only at-bat during Friday's 6-3 loss to the Padres.

Belt brought the Giants within three runs with his ninth-inning blast. The first baseman had gone 0-for-10 across his last five games, and he hasn't posted a multi-hit effort since June 21. The 34-year-old appears to have slipped into the strong side of a platoon at first base. He has a .208/.331/.362 slash line, six homers, 15 RBI, 18 runs scored and a stolen base through 178 plate appearances. Wilmer Flores or Darin Ruf should be expected to draw starts at first base against southpaws, though Belt can usually be counted on for a pinch-hitting appearance once a right-handed pitcher is on the hill.

  • Joc Pederson DH | TEX

Giants' Joc Pederson: Sitting against lefty

Pederson isn't starting Friday's game against the Padres, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Pederson drew a start against a left-handed pitcher Tuesday but will retreat to the bench with southpaw Blake Snell on the mound Friday. Yermin Mercedes is starting in left field and batting third.

Giants' Brandon Belt: On bench against left-hander

Belt isn't starting Friday's game against San Diego, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Belt will be out of the lineup for the third time this week since left-hander Blake Snell is on the mound for the Padres on Friday. Wilmer Flores is starting at first base while David Villar takes over at the keystone.

  • Brent Rooker DH | ATH

    Padres' Brent Rooker: Recalled Friday

Rooker was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Friday.

The 27-year-old hasn't yet appeared in any major-league games this year, but he'll join the Padres as outfield depth after Jurickson Profar (concussion/neck) was placed on the injured list. Rooker has slashed .279/.401/.596 with 14 homers, 45 runs, 44 RBI and four stolen bases over 49 games in El Paso this year.

  • Pirates' Daniel Vogelbach: Not in Friday's lineup

Vogelbach isn't starting Friday's game against the Brewers.

Vogelbach will be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games after going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI during Thursday's nightcap against the Reds. Yoshi Tsutsugo is serving as the designated hitter while Michael Chavis starts at first base.
