Tigers' Beau Brieske: Set for opener duty

Brieske will serve as the opener for Saturday's game against the Marlins, Paige Leckie of MLB.com reports.

Brieske debuted as a starter but has pitched exclusively in relief in the majors this season, maxing out at 20 pitches in an appearance. It's uncertain who will follow Brieske in Saturday's contest. The Tigers could make a roster move to add an arm like Joey Wentz, or they could go with more of a bullpen game instead of an opener-bulk reliever arrangement.

  • Matt Krook RP | ATH

Yankees' Matt Krook: On minor-league IL

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre placed Krook on its 7-day injured list July 22 with an unspecified injury.

Krook is without a clear timeline to return to action for the Triple-a club. The lefty reliever has struggled in two appearances in the majors this season, allowing seven earned runs over three innings. However, Krook has impressed with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a 0.70 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 46:18 K:BB across 25.2 frames.

  • Owen White RP | CHW

Rangers' Owen White: Sent back to Triple-A

Texas optioned White to Triple-A Round Rock on Friday.

White has surrendered five earned runs on five hits and two walks in four major-league innings this season while working in relief. A consensus top-100 prospect entering the year, the young right-hander will presumably return to a starting role with Round Rock.

  • Josh Sborz RP | TEX

Rangers' Josh Sborz: Activated from 15-day IL

Texas activated Sborz (biceps) from the 15-day injured list Friday.

Sborz will return to the Rangers' bullpen Friday night in San Diego after missing about three weeks because of right biceps tendinitis. He's pitched to a 4.54 ERA and 52:13 K:BB in 37.2 innings this season for the current AL West leaders.

  • Cole Sands RP | MIN

Twins' Cole Sands: Optioned to Triple-A

Minnesota optioned Sands to Triple-A St. Paul on Friday.

Sands has posted a 4.50 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 14:9 K:BB in 14 innings of relief this season at the major-league level. Jorge Polanco (hamstring) is back from the injured list in a corresponding roster move.

  • Chad Green RP | TOR

Blue Jays' Chad Green: Moving rehab to Triple-A soon

Green (elbow) will make one more rehab appearance with Single-A Dunedin on Saturday before moving up to Triple-A Buffalo, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Green has made two scoreless appearances for Dunedin thus far as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. He appears to be tracking toward an early August return and could provide a nice boost to the Toronto bullpen.

  • Gerardo Reyes RP | ATH

Angels' Gerardo Reyes: Optioned to Salt Lake

The Angels optioned Reyes to Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.

This move clears a 26-man roster spot for Lucas Giolito, who was acquired from the White Sox on Wednesday and will make his Angels debut in a start Friday night against the Blue Jays. The 30-year-old Reyes has allowed six runs (five earned) in 6.2 major-league innings this year.

  • Astros' Kendall Graveman: Returns to Houston in trade

The White Sox traded Graveman to the Astros on Friday in exchange for Korey Lee, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

He becomes the fifth different pitcher dealt by the White Sox ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline. Graveman finished the 2021 season in Houston, so manager Dusty Baker and the coaching staff are already familiar with what the 32-year-old reliever can contribute. He figures to operate in a setup role ahead of Astros closer Ryan Pressly. Graveman had a 3.48 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 42:20 K:BB through 44 innings this season with Chicago.

  • White Sox's Jordan Leasure: Moved in Lynn, Kelly trade

The Dodgers traded Leasure, Nick Nastrini and Trayce Thompson to the White Sox on Friday in exchange for Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Leasure, a hard-throwing 24-year-old reliever, was sporting a 3.09 ERA and 56:16 K:BB in 35 innings of work this season at Double-A Tulsa. He could be a future high-leverage option for Chicago.

  • Joe Kelly RP | LAD

White Sox's Joe Kelly: Dodgers reunion close

The White Sox are nearing a deal to send Kelly to the Dodgers along with Lance Lynn, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

After putting up a 4.97 ERA and 1.31 WHIP through 29 innings with the White Sox, Kelly seems poised to rejoin the Dodgers' bullpen after one and a half seasons in Chicago. Assuming the deal goes through, Kelly will likely be used primarily in middle relief by Los Angeles.
