  • Freddy Tarnok RP | MIA

Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Pitches to contact as opener

Tarnok served as the opener in Wednesday's loss to the Giants and allowed three runs on three hits and a walk over 2.2 innings. He struck out four and uncorked a wild pitch.

Tarnok took the next step in his 2023 acclimation process after a significantly delayed debut due to a shoulder strain, but he turned in an uneven performance. The right-hander needed 49 pitches to record eight outs, and only 29 of those offerings found the strike zone. Tarnok worked himself into trouble early as well, surrendering a two-run home run to J.D. Davis in the first inning that set the stage for the ragged outing. The fact Tarnok got the call as an opener following a pair of relief appearances to open the season could be indicative of a potential rotation audition down the road, but manager Mark Kotsay likely wants to see the 24-year-old get his feet under him a bit more before going that route.

  • Kenley Jansen RP | DET

Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Nabs 22nd save

Jansen allowed one hit and struck out one batter in a scoreless inning to earn a save against Atlanta on Wednesday.

Jansen hit the first batter he faced in the ninth frame to put the tying run on base, but he managed to get out of the inning unscathed with the help of catcher Connor Wong, who threw out Atlanta speedster Forrest Wall on a stolen-base attempt with one out. For Jansen, the key stat is that he recorded his 13th straight successful save, and he hasn't blown an opportunity since May 12. The veteran closer has tempted fate all season with a career-worst 1.35 WHIP, but he's still been very effective in his first season with Boston, collecting 22 saves in 25 chances and posting a 2.97 ERA over 33.1 innings.

  • Clay Holmes RP | NYM

Yankees' Clay Holmes: Registers 14th save

Holmes earned a save against the Mets on Wednesday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning.

Holmes had no problem protecting a two-run ninth-inning Yankees lead, throwing 11 of his 14 pitches for strikes and retiring all three batters he faced. The right-hander continues to pitch well after a shaky start to the campaign, holding the opponent scoreless in 28 of his past 31 outings. Over that span, he's posted a minuscule 0.88 ERA and 0.95 WHIP while notching a 38:11 K:BB and recording 10 saves in 11 chances across 30.2 frames.

  • Hogan Harris RP | ATH

Athletics' Hogan Harris: Takes loss as bulk reliever

Harris (2-5) allowed two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out three over 3.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Giants.

Harris followed opener Freddy Tarnok, who gave up three runs over 2.2 innings. Oakland briefly tied the game while Harris was on the mound, but he surrendered a two-run home run to Austin Slater in the sixth inning. Harris has taken the loss in five of his last seven outings, though this was the shortest one in that span. He's at a 6.07 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 49:23 K:BB through 56.1 innings over 12 appearances (five starts) this season. The southpaw is tentatively lined up for a challenging road matchup against the Dodgers next week.

  • Reynaldo Lopez RP | ATL

Angels' Reynaldo Lopez: Heading to Anaheim

The Angels acquired Lopez and right-hander Lucas Giolito from the White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for catcher Edgar Quero and left-hander Ky Bush, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Lopez has taken a noticeable step back from his 2022 campaign, posting a 4.29 ERA and 1.31 WHIP through 42 innings in Chicago this season. He'll now help shore up the Los Angeles bullpen and likely serve primarily in middle relief due to consistency issues.

  • Kaleb Ort RP | LAA

Red Sox's Kaleb Ort: Moved to 60-day IL

The Red Sox transferred Ort (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

Ort was initially placed on the injured list July 7 due to right elbow inflammation, and he'll now remain out through the beginning of September. His transfer clears a 40-man spot for Mauricio Llovera, who was acquired in a trade with San Francisco on Wednesday.

  • Red Sox's Mauricio Llovera: Shipped to Boston

The Giants traded Llovera to the Red Sox on Wednesday in exchange for minor-league reliever Marques Johnson.

Llovera was designated for assignment by San Francisco on Saturday and will retain a 40-man roster spot with his new club. The 27-year-old righty holds a 3.92 ERA and 1.09 WHIP through 20.2 frames in Triple-A this season, and he's given up just one run through 5.1 innings in the majors. Llovera doesn't have any options remaining, so he'll likely be used in middle relief out of Boston's bullpen. Kaleb Ort (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day IL to make room on Boston's 40-man roster.

  • Hogan Harris RP | ATH

Athletics' Hogan Harris: Slated for bulk-relief duty

Harris is in line for bulk-relief duty Wednesday in San Francisco, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.

Harris' appearances this season have been split evenly between starting and bulk-relief work. He will be following Freddy Tarnok, who is pretty stretched out himself.

  • Freddy Tarnok RP | MIA

    Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Opening Wednesday

Tarnok will serve as an opener for the Athletics on Wednesday in San Francisco, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.

He hasn't pitched in nearly a week and went three innings in that appearance, so it could be more of a piggyback with Hogan Harris rather than a traditional opener/bulk reliever situation. Tarnok has allowed three runs and walked five over 5.2 frames with the A's this season.

  • Andres Munoz RP | SEA

Mariners' Andres Munoz: Earns second save

Munoz picked up the save Wednesday against the Twins, working around a hit in a scoreless inning.

With Paul Sewald having pitched in Seattle's previous two games, Munoz was called upon to work the ninth Wednesday. He maneuvered around a leadoff single, closing out an 8-7 win to pick up his second save of the year -- his first since Opening Day. The 24-year-old Munoz had struggled to a 6.10 ERA over his previous 10 appearances (10.1 innings). Still, the right-hander has high-end potential and appears to be the next man up behind Sewald in the Mariners' bullpen. Munoz now sports a 2.82 ERA with a 1.12 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB across 22.1 innings this season.
