  • Ken Giles RP | ATL

Astros' Ken Giles: Placed on paternity list

Giles (paternity) was placed on paternity leave prior to the Astros' game Friday.

This means that Giles will be out at least one game, but will likely miss all three against Toronto. Players are allowed to miss up to three games and Giles didn't travel with the team. The Astros also activated fellow reliever Luke Gregerson from the disabled list Friday, and he will be good to go for Friday's contest.

  • Chris Beck RP | STL

White Sox's Chris Beck: Recalled by White Sox Friday

Beck has been recalled by the White Sox on Friday from Triple-A Charlotte.

Beck has spent time with both Triple-A Charlotte and Chicago this season, pitching a combined 73 innings. Since being sent back down to Triple-A on July 10, Beck has pitched 10 innings, giving up just 3 runs while striking out 10. Beck has been used mainly as a reliever this year, starting only seven of his 28 appearances.

  • Brian Johnson RP | BOS

Red Sox's Brian Johnson: Three straight quality starts

Johnson has completed the sixth inning in three straight starts, posting a 1.96 ERA with 13 strikeouts and four walks in 18.1 innings for Triple-A Pawtucket.

Johnson, who took some time off earlier this year to treat anxiety issues, looks like the strike-thrower he was before the 2016 season. He's not overpowering, but when he's on the left-hander has impeccable command and changes his speeds to keep hitters off balance.

  • Red Sox's Craig Kimbrel: Available to pitch Thursday

Kimbrel (knee) was available to pitch Thursday night in Boston's 4-2 loss to the Yankees, Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.

Manager John Farrell said he was going to use Kimbrel to close out the game, but the Yankees put up a three-spot in the eighth inning to take a lead, rendering the services of the closer unnecessary. Given his availability to pitch, Kimbrel is no longer day-to-day with knee soreness.

  • Yankees' Dellin Betances: Strikes out side in save

Betances allowed a hit and a walk but struck out the side as he nabbed his third save Thursday against the Red Sox.

With the exodus of Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman, Betances has been thrust into the closer's role and has been perfect so far. The hard-throwing reliever has yet to yield a run since the trade deadline and has struck out 10 batters over his last five innings, lowering his ERA to 2.32.

  • Chris Devenski RP | NYM

Astros' Chris Devenski: Earns first MLB win

Devenski (1-4) hurled five innings of no-run ball, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out five versus the Twins on Thursday.

Devenski has spent the majority of the season in the bullpen where he's pitched to an effective 1.62 ERA, but was asked to make a start on Thursday for just the fifth time this season. The rookie is likely headed back to a relief role, though his dominance of the Twins' lineup, albeit weak, is encouraging.

  • Ken Giles RP | ATL

Astros' Ken Giles: Won't travel to Toronto

Giles (paternity) will not travel with the team for its weekend series against the Blue Jays, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Though the Astros are unlikely to make the official roster move until Friday, the fact of the matter is that Giles will not be with the Astros over the weekend. The MLB paternity list requires that a player miss a minimum of one game and a maximum of three, and it sounds as though Giles will miss the whole series. Former closer Luke Gregerson could be a candidate to be activated in time for the series against Toronto, but it's unclear if he's fully ready to return to the club.

  • Donnie Hart RP | BAL

Orioles' Donnie Hart: Will be recalled Friday

Hart will be recalled from Double-A Bowie on Friday, Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports.

Logan Ondrusek was sent down Thursday, paving the way for Hart's return to the major league roster. Hart turned in three scoreless appearances during his initial callup last month and he's posted a 50:7 K:BB in 46.1 innings with Bowie this year, but the Orioles' bullpen is stacked and Hart figures to merely provide depth once again.

  • Tigers' Warwick Saupold: Optioned back to Triple-A

Saupold was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

With Bruce Rondon being reinstated from the paternity list, Saupold will head back to Triple-A after a brief stint with the Tigers. He was only up with the Tigers for one day and he did not make an appearance during his stint. Saupold has a 2.88 ERA over 56.1 innings at Triple-A this season.

  • Buddy Boshers RP | HOU

Twins' Buddy Boshers: Lands on disabled list

Boshers (elbow) was placed on the disabled list Thursday with left elbow inflammation, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Boshers will hit the disabled list as the Twins recall Andrew Albers in a corresponding move. The 28-year-old has accumulated a 3.86 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP during the course of 23.1 innings with the Twins.
