  • Matt Barnes RP | WAS

Matt Barnes added to Boston bullpen

The Red Sox added pitching prospect Matt Barnes to the major-league roster Monday when they purchased his contract from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Barnes was bothered by a shoulder injury during spring training, but fought through it to post a solid season at Pawtucket. The 24-year-old posted a 3.95 ERA with 103 strikeouts and 46 walks in 127 2/3 innings of work.

  • Long ball leads to early exit for Rubby De La Rosa

After getting out of jams in the third and fourth inning, a three-run, no-out homer in the fifth inning was too much for Rubby De La Rosa, as he exited with a deficit that the Red Sox could not recover from. Jose Bautista's blast sent De La Rosa to the showers, and the Blue Jays prevailed, 3-1, on Sunday.

The three runs were all that De La Rosa allowed, but he yielded a total of seven hits and two walks in four-plus innings. He struck out two batters in the effort.

While the flurry of baserunners contributed to De La Rosa's early exit, so may have a pitch limit. Red Sox manager John Farrell told the Boston Herald he would be watching De La Rosa's workload, saying, "we are not going to just let him go to unrestricted or 100-plus pitches." The 25-year-old threw 81 pitches in the outing.

De La Rosa's record fell to 4-6, while his ERA rose to 4.01.

  • Scott Carroll RP | CHC

Scott Carroll loses in a pitchers' duel

Scott Carroll turned in one of his better starts of the season on Sunday, but he came up short, as the White Sox lost to the Indians, 2-0. Carroll held the Indians to two runs over seven innings, but he was bested by Carlos Carrasco, who turned in 8 2/3 scoreless innings.

Only one of the seven hits allowed by Carroll -- a Michael Bourn triple -- was for extra bases, and he issued just one walk along with one strikeout. Carroll's record fell to 5-10, but his ERA improved to 4.92.

  • Fernando Rodney makes quick work of Rangers

Mariners closer Fernando Rodney made quick work of the Rangers Saturday night for the save, his 43 save of the season. Rodney needed only 10 pitches to complete a 1-2-3 ninth inning to clinch a 4-2 victory. He has converted 43 of 46 save chances, with a 2.58 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP over 39 1/3 innings of relief.

  • Nick Martinez coughs up game-tying home run

Rangers starting pitcher Nick Martinez was in line for the win before allowing a game-tying home run on Saturday against Seattle.

Martinez got off to a strong start, pitching five scoreless innings before serving up a two-run home run to Kyle Seager in the sixth inning, which proved to be his only blemish. He allowed two earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four over six innings of work in a no-decision. Of his 93 pitches, 58 were strikes.

Martinez owns a 5.03 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP over 116 1/3 innings. He will likely make his next start Friday at home against Atlanta.

  • Danny Duffy SP | TEX

    Liam Hendriks RP | CHC

Liam Hendriks to start if Danny Duffy misses time

Royals pitcher Liam Hendriks will start if Danny Duffy misses any time, according to the Kansas City Star.

Hendriks came on in relief of Duffy Saturday after Duffy left with a shoulder injury. Manager Ned Yost said he expects Duffy to miss at least one start.

  • Liam Hendriks RP | CHC

Liam Hendriks picks up loss in emergency start

Royals pitcher Liam Hendriks struggled during an emergency start Saturday.

Hendriks wasn’t slated to start, but Danny Duffy had to leave Saturday’s game after throwing one pitch. Hendriks came on in relief, and had a tough time against the Yankees. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits over four innings. Hendriks struck out three and did not issue any walks.

Hendriks had trouble immediately. In the first inning, the Yankees managed a small two-out rally, bringing in the first run of the game. Two additional runs would score in the third after Hendriks opened the frame with a double, triple and a sac fly. The final run against Hendriks would be unearned due to a throwing error.

With the loss, Hendriks dropped to 1-1. He’ll take on the Red Sox in his next start if he remains in the rotation.

  • Fernando Rodney saves his 42nd game Friday

Mariners reliever Fernando Rodney saved his 42nd game Friday against the Rangers.

Rodney entered with a three-run lead, and put himself in trouble immediately. Leonys Martin led off the inning with a double, and moved to third on fielder's indifference. Martin then scored on a wild pitch. Rodney gave up another single during the inning, but managed to escape without giving up any additional runs. He struck out one hitter during the inning.

  • Hector Santiago not at his best in no-decision

Angels starting pitcher Hector Santiago endured a rough start despite not factoring into the decision Thursday night against the Twins in Minneapolis. He was charged with four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out three over five innings of work.

Of his 90 pitches, 54 were strikes. He owns a 3.46 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP over 112 innings of work. His next start will come Tuesday at Texas.

  • Matt Moore RP | BOS

Matt Moore set to begin throwing program

Rays pitcher Matt Moore will play catch for the first time Monday since undergoing Tommy John surgery, he told the Tampa Bay Times Wednesday.

Moore's rehab has gone as planned so far, to the point where he can work out in the weight room without limitations. He is aiming to return to the team's rotation next May.
