  • Ryan Burr RP | TOR

Blue Jays' Ryan Burr: Opening Sunday's action

Burr is opening Sunday's game against the Marlins.

Burr has not given up a run while notching eight strikeouts in 4.1 innings while working as an opener this season. Ryan Yarbrough could come in to log some bulk innings after Burr exits.

  • Shawn Dubin RP | ARI

Astros' Shawn Dubin: Sent to minors

Dubin was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday.

Dubin logged a 4.17 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 49 strikeouts, two saves and one win in 45.1 innings for the big club this year. He pitched a clean ninth inning with two strikeouts and a save Saturday, so Dubin may have been optioned simply because he wasn't going to be used Sunday.

  • Diego Castillo RP | COL

Twins' Diego Castillo: Loses 40-man roster spot

Castillo was designated for assignment Sunday.

He loses his spot on the 40-man roster on the final day of the season and will be a free agent this offseason. Castillo walked more batters (eight) than he struck out (six) in the big leagues this season and last recorded a save in 2022 with Seattle.

  • Mark Leiter RP | ATH

Yankees' Mark Leiter: Reinstated from paternity list

The Yankees reinstated Leiter from the paternity list Sunday.

Leiter will be available out of the bullpen for the Yankees' regular-season finale against the Pirates. The 33-year-old reliever has a 4.58 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 83:20 K:BB over 57 innings this season.

  • Kirby Yates RP | LAA

Rangers' Kirby Yates: Secures save No. 33

Yates picked up the save over the Angels on Saturday, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.

Yates took the mound with a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth and retired the side on just nine pitches to secure his 33rd save of the campaign. The veteran reliever has been spectacular in the month of September, recording eight saves while allowing just one hit over 9.1 scoreless innings (10 appearances). He's also issued just one walk over his last four outings.

  • Mason Miller RP | SD

Athletics' Mason Miller: Falters in ninth Saturday

Miller was charged with his third blown save of the season in an extra-inning loss to the Mariners on Saturday, allowing two earned runs on two hits over one inning. He struck out three.

Miller surrendered a game-tying, two-run home run to Luke Raley in the bottom of the ninth inning. The blown save was the right-hander's first since June 14, and the pair of earned runs snapped a four-appearance scoreless streak. Despite the stumble, Miller heads into the final day of the 2024 campaign basking in a breakout season that's seen him accrue 28 saves alongside a 2-2 record, 2.49 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and elite 14.4 K/9 across 65 innings (55 appearances).

  • Ty Madden P | DET

Tigers' Ty Madden: Ineffective in relief Saturday

Madden allowed three runs on four hits and a walk across three innings of relief during Saturday's 4-0 loss to the White Sox. He struck out two.

Opener Beau Brieske was tagged with the loss for allowing just a single run, but Madden didn't help matters during his uneven relief appearance. The 24-year-old righty had a sharp 2.55 ERA over his first four outings following his first MLB promotion in late August, but he now has a 10.12 ERA over his last two games. The Tigers are headed to the postseason and have some decisions to make with their pitching staff, so it remains to be seen if Madden makes the playoff roster and gets to pitch again during his rookie campaign.

  • Sam Long RP | KC

Royals' Sam Long: Handed loss Saturday

Long (3-3) allowed a run on one hit and one walk while striking out three over 1.1 innings to take the loss versus Atlanta on Saturday.

Long gave up a walk-off solo home run to Travis d'Arnaud in the ninth inning. September has been a little rough for Long -- he's allowed seven runs over 11.1 innings, though he has an 11:3 K:BB in that span. The southpaw reliever has a 3.16 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 44:17 K:BB through 42.2 innings, making him a decent option for a spot in the Royals' postseason bullpen.

  • Nick Sandlin RP | LAA

Guardians' Nick Sandlin: Working as opener Sunday

Sandlin will serve as the Guardians' opening pitcher for Sunday's game against the Astros, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

Sandlin will make his second start of the regular season Sunday, with Gavin Williams expected to serve in bulk relief. Sandlin's first start came Aug. 26 against the Royals, when he allowed two walks while striking out two batters in one scoreless inning. Sandlin has a 3.75 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 68:27 K:BB across 57.2 innings this season.

  • Rangers' Walter Pennington: Recalled by Texas

Texas recalled Pennington from the Arizona Complex League Rangers on Saturday.

Pennington takes the spot in the Rangers' bullpen vacated by right-hander Josh Sborz, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to right shoulder fatigue. Pennington made his last appearance Sept. 21 against the Mariners, during which he allowed three runs on two hits while striking out two across two-thirds of an inning. Across 15 major-league outings with the Rangers this season (including one start), Pennington has a 3.12 ERA and 1.73 WHIP across 17.1 innings.
