  • Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Handed eighth loss

Hernandez (1-8) allowed a run on one hit over two-thirds of an inning to take the loss and a blown save Thursday versus the Mariners. He did not strike out or walk a batter.

Taylor Hearn was called upon to protect a two-run lead in the eighth inning, but he put two of the three batters he faced on base. Hernandez relieved him and immediately gave up a three-run moonshot to Julio Rodriguez. Hernandez has allowed nine runs (eight earned) over 5.1 innings in August, and he has two holds and a blown save without converting a save chance this month. He has one save, 12 holds, a 4.47 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 70:20 K:BB through 58.1 innings this year. Should the Royals have any leads to protect down the stretch, it's likely the save chances will be distributed on a committee basis.

  • Greg Weissert RP | BOS

Yankees' Greg Weissert: Recalled from Triple-A

Weissert was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.

Weissert will provide the Yankees with a fresh relief arm as they begin a series this weekend against the rival Red Sox. He holds a 3.60 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 20 relief innings this season in the majors.

  • Taylor Clarke RP | ARI

Royals' Taylor Clarke: Activated from injured list

Clarke (elbow) was activated from the 15-day injured list Friday.

Clarke wound up requiring just a minimum stay on the IL and rejoins the Royals' bullpen after skipping a rehab assignment. The right-hander has been used in high-leverage spot by Kansas City this season and could even be in the mix for some saves down the stretch.

  • Royals' Max Castillo: Sent back to minors

Castillo was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Friday.

Castillo allowed two runs over 3.1 innings during his most recent stint in the majors. The Royals will announce a corresponding move prior to their series opener Friday against the Cubs.

  • Matt Brash RP | SEA

Mariners' Matt Brash: Picks up fourth save

Brash picked up the save Thursday against the Royals, striking out one over a perfect inning.

Brash entered the contest with a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth and needed just eight pitches to retire the side in order and notch his fourth save of the season. It was a nice rebound effort after he surrendered four hits over his last two outings. The right-hander has now converted three of his last four save attempts and has not issued a walk in three straight appearances.

  • Angel Zerpa RP | MIL

Royals' Angel Zerpa: Strikes out six over four frames

Zerpa did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over four innings against the Mariners. He struck out six.

It wasn't an ideal start to the night for Zerpa, as the right-hander allowed three hits and two walks over the first two innings while also beaning two batters. He still managed to come away with just one run allowed but was replaced by Max Castillo to open the fifth after reaching a season-high 84 pitches. Zerpa has now allowed five runs over his last two appearances, recording an 8:3 K:BB over that span. His six strikeouts Thursday also marked a season high.

  • Michael Kelly RP | ATH

Guardians' Michael Kelly: Headed to 15-day IL

Kelly will be placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with back spasms, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

Kelly has made three straight scoreless appearances in a multi-inning relief role for the Guardians, but he'll be sidelined until at least the end of August. James Karinchak is expected to be brought up from Triple-A Columbus to fill the bullpen vacancy in Cleveland.

  • Guardians' James Karinchak: To be recalled Friday

Karinchak is expected to be recalled Friday from Triple-A Columbus, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

Karinchak has struggled to a 5.12 ERA in 19.1 innings at the Triple-A level since the Guardians demoted him in early June, but he's needed as a replacement for Michael Kelly (back), who will head to the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Xzavion Curry RP | MIA

Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Tigers-Guardians postponed by rain

Curry will not start Thursday against the Tigers after the game was postponed due to rain.

There are storms passing through Cleveland, so Thursday's game has been moved into a traditional doubleheader Friday at Progressive Field. Curry is lined up to start the second half of the twin bill, with Gavin Williams handling the early tilt.

  • Daniel Norris RP | CLE

Guardians' Daniel Norris: Designated for assignment

Norris was designated for assignment Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

Norris had a 4.15 ERA and 1.62 WHIP since being called up July 24. Tim Herrin was recalled to take his place in the bullpen.
