Nick Nelson RP | PHI
Phillies' Nick Nelson: Moved to 15-day IL
Nelson (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 27.
Nelson suffered a moderate left hamstring strain in mid-March and will not be part of the Opening Day roster mix in Philly. He should be able to fill a swingman role before the end of April.

Thomas Szapucki RP | SF
Giants' Thomas Szapucki: Beginning year on 60-day IL
The Giants placed Szapucki (arm) on the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Szapucki's move to the 60-day IL opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for catcher Roberto Perez and ensures the 26-year-old lefty will miss at least the first two months of the season. The Giants shut Szapucki down earlier this month after he experienced soreness in in his left arm, and he's since received multiple medical opinions on the injury, including a consultation with a doctor who specializes in thoracic outlet syndrome. The team has yet to provide an estimated timeline for Szapucki to resume pitching while he contends with an injury the Giants are currently terming as "left arm neuropathy."

Wilking Rodriguez RP | NYY
Cardinals' Wilking Rodriguez: Placed on 15-day IL
Rodriguez (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 27.
Rodriguez began experiencing tightness in his throwing shoulder toward the end of spring training. It's not believed to be an overly serious injury, but there's also no timetable for when he might be ready to join the bullpen in St. Louis.

Joel Payamps RP | ATL
Brewers' Joel Payamps: Breaks camp with Brewers
Payamps, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, secured a spot on the Brewers' Opening Day roster.
Payamps was not sharp during the spring, allowing five earned runs over 5.1 innings, but he is out of options and the Brewers want to take a longer look at him after acquiring him from the A's over the offseason. He figures to open in a low-leverage role.

Javy Guerra RP | ATL
Brewers' Javy Guerra: Grabs roster spot
Guerra, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, secured a spot on the Brewers' Opening Day roster.
Guerra was tagged for seven earned runs over 5.2 spring training innings, but with him out of options the Brewers elected to place him in the big-league bullpen and give him a chance to iron things out. Guerra owns a career 6.60 ERA at the big-league level, but he did post a 3.38 over 17 appearances with the Rays last season.

Sean Hjelle RP | SF
Giants' Sean Hjelle: Denied Opening Day roster spot
The Giants optioned Hjelle to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday.
With Anthony DeSclafani finishing spring training healthy after initially being eased while he worked back from last July's ankle surgery, he appears set to serve as the Giants' long-relief option and preferred spot starter. The presence of DeSclafani and another multi-inning relief option in Jakob Junis leaves no room for Hjelle, who sputtered to a 5.76 ERA and 1.64 WHIP over 25 innings in the big leagues a season ago.

Lucas Sims RP | CHW
Reds' Lucas Sims: Placed on 15-day IL
The Reds placed Sims (back) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.
Bell was bothered by back spasms throughout much of March and will need a little more rest and rehab before he can jump into the Reds' bullpen. The 28-year-old might eventually emerge again as a high-leverage option in Cincinnati, though he has some proving to do after his lost 2022.

Tyler Matzek RP | NYY
Braves' Tyler Matzek: Shifts to 60-day IL
Matzek (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 27.
Matzek's move to the 60-day IL was only a matter of time after he underwent Tommy John surgery in October. He was also dealing with a bulging disc in his back during spring training. The veteran left-hander will miss the entire 2023 campaign while recovering and rehabbing from the elbow procedure.
