  • Tyler Matzek RP | NYY

Braves' Tyler Matzek: Shifts to 60-day IL

Matzek (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 27.

Matzek's move to the 60-day IL was only a matter of time after he underwent Tommy John surgery in October. He was also dealing with a bulging disc in his back during spring training. The veteran left-hander will miss the entire 2023 campaign while recovering and rehabbing from the elbow procedure.

  • Alex Young RP | CIN

Reds' Alex Young: Added to roster

The Reds selected Young's contract from Triple-A Louisville on Thursday.

Young inked a minor-league contract with the Reds in January and wound up claiming a spot in the Opening Day bullpen. He figures to operate in a mop-up type of role.

  • Luke Jackson RP | SEA

Giants' Luke Jackson: Opens season on IL

The Giants placed Jackson (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Jackson is just under a year removed from getting Tommy John surgery, and though he has since resumed throwing bullpen sessions and could soon be ready to face hitters, he's most likely at least a month away from heading out on what will presumably be a prolonged rehab assignment. Whenever the Giants determine Jackson is ready to return from the IL, he'll likely be ticketed for a middle-innings role, at least early on.

  • Derek Law RP | ARI

Reds' Derek Law: Added to Opening Day roster

The Reds selected Law's contract Thursday.

Law won an Opening Day bullpen spot in Cincinnati and could quickly rise into a prominent setup role. Alexis Diaz is of course the clear frontrunner for saves.

  • Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Moves to 15-day IL

Iglesias (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 27.

The veteran right-hander suffered a shoulder strain late in camp but hopes to spend the minimum 15 days on the IL, which would allow him to return April 11. A.J. Minter is the favorite to closer games while Iglesias is sidelined, though Joe Jimenez could also be in the mix.

  • Brewers' Peter Strzelecki: Secures roster spot

Strzelecki, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, secured a spot on the Brewers' Opening Day roster.

Strzelecki was not particularly sharp during spring training, but the 2.83 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 40:15 K:BB he posted over 35.0 innings out of Milwaukee's bullpen in 2022 helped him break camp with the big club for the first time in his career. Roles are up for grabs in the Brewers' bullpen behind closer Devin Williams, and Strzelecki will have a chance to be part of the late-inning mix.

  • Brandon Hughes RP | CHC

Cubs' Brandon Hughes: Move to IL official

Hughes (knee) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 27.

Hughes was sidelined for the last week of spring training with left knee soreness, and the Cubs opted for an IL stint rather than rushing him back for Opening Day. The left-hander threw a bullpen session Monday and will be eligible to be activated April 11.

  • Braves' Richard Lovelady: Headed to Atlanta

Atlanta acquired Lovelady from the Royals on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations. He was then optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Lovelady failed to make the Royals' Opening Day roster and is now headed to a new organization. He'll provide Atlanta with some left-handed relief depth at Gwinnett.

  • Mets' Bryce Montes de Oca: On IL, gets Tommy John surgery

The Mets placed Montes on the 15-day injured list Thursday after he underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday along with a procedure to remove a bone spur and bone fragment from the back of his right elbow, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

De Oca had been scheduled for an arthroscopic procedure to address the loose bodies in his elbow, but after further examination, doctors tested his UCL and determined that the ligament needed to be replaced, too. It's the second Tommy John surgery for Montes de Oca, who had his first one back in 2013 while he was in high school. Because of that, his rehab might take longer, possibly sidelining him until at least the middle of the 2024 season.

  • Tanner Rainey RP | DET

Nationals' Tanner Rainey: Officially on 60-day IL

The Nationals placed Rainey (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday.

Rainey hopes to return in the latter portion of this season while he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, but it's not a guarantee. The Nationals were able to clear a 40-man roster spot with this transaction.
