  • Austin Davis RP | SD

Padres' Austin Davis: Designated for assignment

The Padres designated Davis for assignment Wednesday.

The Padres needed to clear space for new acquisitions Martin Perez, Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing, so Davis will be jettisoned off both the active roster and the 40-man. The 31-year-old southpaw appeared in seven games for San Diego, allowing seven runs in seven innings while striking out six batters and walking five.

  • Caleb Kilian RP | SF

Cubs' Caleb Kilian: Activated, optioned to Triple-A

The Cubs reinstated Kilian (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Kilian had been on the shelf all season while recovering from a teres major strain of his right shoulder, but he's healthy again after completing an eight-appearance rehab assignment in the minors. The last five of those outings came at Iowa, with whom Kilian gave up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and five walks while striking out three over eight innings. Though his results were generally poor, Kilian tossed three no-hit innings in his most recent appearance Sunday. Kilian had been working in relief during his rehab assignment, but since the Cubs didn't have a spot in the bullpen available for him upon his activation, he could get stretched back out for starting duty with Iowa.

  • Reds' Lyon Richardson: Heads back to minors

The Reds optioned Richardson to Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday.

Richardson got some work out of the bullpen in Tuesday's win over the Cubs, allowing two runs while retiring two batters. The right-hander will rejoin the rotation at Louisville.

  • Reed Garrett RP | NYM

Mets' Reed Garrett: Touches 97 mph in live BP

Garrett (elbow) has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday after touching 97 mph in a live batting practice session Wednesday, Joe Pantorno of amNewYork Metro reports.

Garrett has been sidelined since mid-July with right elbow inflammation but looks to be healthy again. Given the short absence, Garrett might require just the one rehab appearance before rejoining the Mets' bullpen.

  • Cardinals' Jacob Bosiokovic: Loses 40-man roster spot

The Cardinals designated Bosiokovic for assignment Wednesday.

The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Michael McGreevy, who was called up from Triple-A Memphis to start Wednesday's game against the Rangers. Bosiokovic was up with the big club briefly earlier this season but didn't make an appearance out of the bullpen.

  • Ryan Loutos RP | SEA

Cardinals' Ryan Loutos: Returns to majors

The Cardinals recalled Loutos from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

Loutos made two scoreless appearances earlier this season with the Cardinals and holds a 1.98 ERA and 43:16 K:BB over 36.1 frames at Memphis in 2024. He'll provide St. Louis with a fresh bullpen arm.

  • Chris Roycroft RP | STL

Cardinals' Chris Roycroft: Headed back to minors

The Cardinals optioned Roycroft to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

Roycroft wasn't going to be available for a day or two after throwing three innings and 50 pitches over the previous two days. Ryan Loutos was called up from Triple-A to take over Roycroft's spot in the bullpen.

  • Matt Gage RP | SF

Mets' Matt Gage: Sent down to minors

The Mets optioned Gage to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.

Gage was just recalled from Syracuse on Monday but didn't make an appearance. The Mets are doing some reshuffling with their bullpen after making a couple additions at the trade deadline.

  • Tyler Zuber RP | MIA

Mets' Tyler Zuber: Sent to Triple-A

The Mets optioned Zuber to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

He was acquired via trade from the Rays on Tuesday but will be heading to the minors to make room on the 26-man active roster for another reliever who was acquired at the deadline, Huascar Brazoban. Zuber boasts a 2.49 ERA and 29:6 K:BB in 21.2 innings at the Triple-A level in 2024.

  • Alexis Diaz RP | TEX

Reds' Alexis Diaz: Notches save No. 21

Diaz picked up the save Tuesday against Chicago, allowing one walk and no hits across a scoreless ninth inning.

Diaz converted on his 14th consecutive save chance and fired his second consecutive hitless appearance. The 27-year-old has a 4.23 ERA in 38.1 innings but has generally been reliable in the ninth inning, having blown merely two saves. Diaz is one of eight closers with more than 20 saves on the season.
