  • Josh Hader RP | HOU

Padres' Josh Hader: Squanders no-hit bid, salvages win

Hader (1-3) earned his first win of the season in Tuesday's 2-0 victory over Colorado. He allowed two hits with no strikeouts over a scoreless inning.

Hader inherited a combined no-hitter when entering the game after Blake Snell and Robert Suarez held the Rockies at bay for the first eight frames. While the no-hit bid was scratched after Hader gave up a leadoff single to Brendan Rodgers, the closer managed to keep the Rockies from scoring and eventually nabbed his first win of 2023. Over his last four appearances (3.1 innings), Hader has surrendered one run on seven hits with a 2:2 K:BB.

  • Alex Wood RP | ATH

Giants' Alex Wood: Covers five innings

Wood allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings during Tuesday's 8-4 loss to the Diamondbacks. He did not factor into the decision.

Alex Cobb lasted two innings before his hip injury flared up again. Wood was able to provide bulk innings in relief, throwing 47 of 82 pitches for strikes. With the Giants fading in the National League playoff race, Cobb's injury comes at a bad time for the team. Wood may be a candidate to fill the gap in the rotation, either as a traditional starter or bulk reliever -- he's functioned in the latter role often this year. Wood has a 4.60 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 68:39 K:BB through 92 innings over 27 appearances (12 starts) this season. Cobb's spot in the rotation would come up Sunday against the Dodgers, but the Giants' pitching plans are likely to be up in the air until more information on the injury is available.

  • Tanner Scott RP | LAD

Marlins' Tanner Scott: Blown save, win

Scott (9-5) blew the save, but picked up the win anyway Tuesday against the Mets. He allowed two runs on three hits over one inning.

The 29-year-old was unable to preserve Miami's two-run, ninth-inning lead Tuesday, surrendering three hits and two runs to blow the save opportunity. Luckily for Scott, Jake Burger notched a walk-off base hit in the bottom of the inning, earning Scott the vulture victory. After seven consecutive scoreless outings, the southpaw has allowed runs in each of his last two appearances. Scott is now 9-for-13 in his save chances this season, with a 2.44 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a 96:24 K:BB across 73.2 innings.

  • Drew Pomeranz RP | LAA

Padres' Drew Pomeranz: Shut down with elbow pain

Pomeranz has been shut down for the year due to renewed elbow discomfort, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Pomeranz restarted a minor-league rehab assignment in late August, but he allowed six earned runs over 3.1 innings (four appearances) before his troublesome left elbow began barking again. The 34-year-old impending free agent hasn't pitched in a major-league game since 2021.

  • Matt Carasiti RP | ATL

Rockies' Matt Carasiti: Optioned to Triple-A

Carasiti was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday.

Carasiti tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief during his three-day stay in the Rockies' bullpen, but the 32-year-old right-hander holds a 6.29 ERA in 16 total major-league appearances this year. Ryan Feltner (head) has been activated from the injured list in a corresponding move and will start Tuesday's game at San Diego.

  • Caleb Ferguson RP | CIN

Dodgers' Caleb Ferguson: Opener assignment Tuesday

Ferguson will serve as the opening pitcher Tuesday against the Tigers, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Ryan Pepiot is lined up to operate in bulk relief. Ferguson, 27, carries a steady 2.44 ERA and 63:21 K:BB in 55.1 innings this season with the Dodgers, but he hasn't thrown more than 25 pitches in a single appearance since June.

  • Adbert Alzolay RP | NYM

Cubs' Adbert Alzolay: Advances to long toss

Alzolay (forearm) threw long toss Tuesday at Wrigley Field, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

On the shelf since Sept. 10 due to a right forearm strain, Alzolay resumed playing catch over the weekend and has now advanced to long-distance throwing. There is still an outside chance that the 28-year-old could return to the Cubs' bullpen before the end of the regular season, but he'll have to move on to mound workouts rather soon. He had tallied 22 saves with a 2.71 ERA and 66:12 K:BB in 63 innings prior to the IL stint.

  • Tommy Nance RP | TOR

Marlins' Tommy Nance: Recalled, goes on 60-day IL

Nance (undisclosed) was recalled Tuesday from Triple-A Jacksonville and placed on the 60-day injured list, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

This move clears out a 40-man roster spot for Matt Moore, whom the Marlins claimed off waivers from the Guardians on Tuesday afternoon. There is no exact diagnosis, but Nance has battled shoulder issues throughout the 2023 season and is now officially done for the year.

  • Thomas Hatch RP | ARI

Pirates' Thomas Hatch: Optioned to Indianapolis

Pittsburgh optioned Hatch to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Kyle Nicolas has been selected from Indianapolis to fill the vacant spot in the Pirates' bullpen. Hatch, 28, carries a 4.08 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 26:12 K:BB across 28.2 major-league innings this season.

  • Matt Moore RP | BOS

Marlins' Matt Moore: Claimed by Miami

Miami claimed Moore off waivers from the Guardians on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Moore will not be eligible for the playoffs given where this move falls on the season calendar, but he can give the Marlins' bullpen a boost over what remains of the regular season as they try to nail down a National League wild-card spot. The veteran left-hander has registered a strong 2.77 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 57:14 K:BB in 48.2 innings of relief this year between Anaheim and Cleveland.
