Romano struck out three in a perfect inning to earn the save in a 2-1 win over the Cardinals in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Romano struck out the side on 13 pitches (10 strikes) to earn his second save in a row. He's on a six-inning scoreless streak, allowing just three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in that span. Romano has earned four saves in six chances this season and has added four holds. He's at an 8.22 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB, but he appears to have things under control after his early struggles. Romano's recent success has put him back in the mix for saves, though he could still share closing duties with Jose Alvarado, who allowed a hit and a walk over one-third of an inning while pitching in the eighth in this game.

The Red Sox recalled Criswell from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

Criswell -- who is with the Red Sox in Detroit -- will take the spot on the 26-man roster vacated by Tanner Houck (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. Criswell made three appearances for the Red Sox out of the bullpen this season, but he's started in four games in Triple-A and could be part of the rotation while Houck is on the shelf. Criswell made 18 starts (in 26 outings) for the Red Sox in 2024 and posted a 6-5 record with a 4.08 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 73:31 K:BB across 99.1 innings.

Joyce underwent surgery to repair his right shoulder Wednesday and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

The Angels shut down Joyce's throwing program earlier in the month after he reported further discomfort in his shoulder. Rather than waiting to see if more rest would do the trick, the 24-year-old righty opted to go under the knife to address the issue, sacrificing the rest of his season in the process. He'll close the book on 2025 with three earned runs allowed in 4.1 innings and shift his focus toward getting ready for the start of the '26 campaign.

The Marlins optioned Veneziano to Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday.

His demotion clears a spot on the 26-man active roster for lefty Ryan Weathers (forearm), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Cubs. Veneziano has a 4.86 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, four holds and a 15:8 K:BB across 16.2 innings with Miami this season, but he allowed four runs (including three home runs) over his last three outings.

Winckowski was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday due to right elbow inflammation, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

It's not yet clear how long Winkowski will be sidelined, but it will be a while before he's under consideration for a promotion to the major-league club. The swingman holds a 3.86 ERA and 9:5 K:BB over 11.2 innings with the Red Sox this season and a 2.21 ERA and 18:2 K:BB across 20.1 frames with Worcester.

Martin said Wednesday that an MRI on his right elbow came back negative, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports.

Martin was removed from Tuesday's game against the Rockies due to tightness in his pitching elbow, but he looks to have avoided a major injury. The reliever will play catch pregame Wednesday but is likely to be unavailable for at least a day or two.

The Astros designated Scott for assignment Wednesday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Scott has struggled in 2025 to replicate his success from last season, posting a 5.40 ERA and 16:12 K:BB over 16.2 frames. He had a 2.23 ERA and 71:35 K:BB across 68.2 innings in 2024, so Scott could draw interest via trade or waivers.

Cousins (forearm) said May 6 that he's hopeful to return from the 60-day injured list in early-to-mid June, MLB.com reports.

Cousins is eligible for activation May 26, but he looks like he'll need another week or two beyond that before making his 2025 debut with the Yankees. The 30-year-old reliever is on the mend from a right forearm strain but took a major step forward in the recovery process earlier this month, when he faced hitters in live batting practice. He could soon be ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment.

The Mariners recalled Diaz from Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday.

Diaz will link up with the big club for the second time this season, after he previously made a 1.1-inning relief appearance April 1 against the Tigers before being demoted a day later. Since then, Diaz has been getting stretched out a starter at Tacoma and had produced a 5.87 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 27:10 K:BB over 30.2 innings. Diaz could be available in relief for Wednesday's game against the Yankees, but if he ends up going unused, he might be an option to make a spot start this weekend in San Diego. The Mariners have an opening in the rotation after Bryce Miller (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move.

Sabrowski (elbow) resumed throwing bullpen sessions earlier this month, MLB.com reports.

Sabrowski has been on the injured list all season due to left elbow inflammation and was briefly shut down in late April after experiencing increased soreness in his pitching arm. He was cleared to resume throwing earlier this month and has since stepped back on the mound, though it's unclear when Sabrowski might be ready to face hitters. Once the Guardians activate him from the 60-day injured list, Sabrowski projects to fill a middle-relief role.
