  • Pedro Avila RP | CLE

Padres' Pedro Avila: Joins big-league roster

Avila had his contract selected by the Padres on Thursday.

Avila appeared in big-league games last season but spent most of the year at Triple-A El Paso. He appeared in 30 games for the affiliate and had a 4.58 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 124:49 K:BB across 112 innings.

  • Nick Martinez: Declines option for 2023

Martinez has declined his $6.5 million player option with the Padres for 2023, making him a free agent.

Martinez signed with San Diego on a one-year deal in December 2021 and posted a 3.47 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 95:41 K:BB across 106.1 innings. The right-hander opened the campaign in the rotation before he was shifted to the bullpen, and he briefly served as the team's closer until Josh Hader got back on track.

  • Robert Suarez RP | ATL

Padres' Robert Suarez: Back with San Diego

Suarez agreed to a five-year, $46 million contract with the Padres on Thursday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.

The right-hander recently declined his $5 million player option for 2023 to become a free agent, but he quickly reached a new deal with the Friars. Suarez, once he recovered from a knee injury, pitched well in the late innings for San Diego last year and had a 2.27 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 61:21 K:BB across 47.2 innings, and he should fill a high-leverage role again in 2023.

  • Royals' Richard Lovelady: Contract selected by KC

The Royals selected Lovelady's contract from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.

Lovelady sat out most of 2022 while he rehabbed from Tommy John surgery, but he returned to game action in September with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Omaha. The left-hander had a 3.48 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 23:6 K:BB across 20.2 innings prior to the injury in 2021 and could be a bullpen piece for Kansas City to open next season.

  • Nationals' Francisco Perez: Sent to Triple-A

Perez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Perez appeared in 10 major-league games for Washington last season and spent the second half of the year with Rochester. He had a 4.82 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 61:32 K:BB across 46.2 innings at Triple-A and won't retain his spot on the 40-man roster through the offseason.

  • Michael Tonkin RP | MIN

Braves' Michael Tonkin: Joins MLB roster

Tonkin was added to Atlanta's major-league roster Thursday.

The right-hander joined Atlanta on a minor-league contract for 2022 and will now enter the offseason on the big-league roster. Tonkin spent the campaign at Triple-A Gwinnett and had a 3.17 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 73:15 K:BB over 48.1 innings. He hasn't appeared in the majors since 2017 with Minnesota.

  • Matt Krook RP | WAS

Yankees' Matt Krook: Added to big-league roster

The Yankees selected Krook's contract to the major-league roster Thursday.

Krook has yet to make his big-league debut but is now on the roster heading into 2023. The 28-year-old spent last season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and had a 4.02 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 155:73 K:BB across 138.2 innings.

  • Jimmy Yacabonis: Parts ways with Tampa Bay

Yacabonis cleared waivers and became a minor-league free agent Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Yacabonis was claimed off waivers by the Rays in August but won't stick around the 40-man roster through the offseason. He appeared in 14 games between Miami and Tampa Bay last season and had an 8.36 ERA, 2.14 WHIP and 21:10 K:BB over 14 innings.

  • Nick Anderson RP | ATH

    Nick Anderson: Hits free agency

Anderson cleared outright waivers and became a free agent Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Anderson has made only six big-league appearances over the past two seasons while dealing with injuries, leading Tampa Bay to remove him from the 40-man roster. The right-hander had a 2.77 ERA across 81.1 innings between 2019 and 2020, so he should receive an opportunity somewhere for next season, though he may have to settle for a minor-league deal.

  • Tyson Miller RP | CHW

Brewers' Tyson Miller: Claimed by Milwaukee

Miller was claimed off waivers by the Brewers on Thursday.

Miller spent most of 2022 at Triple-A, and the Rangers opted not to keep him on the 40-man roster through the offseason. He had a 4.52 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 114:40 K:BB across 89.2 frames in the minors last year.
