  • Derek Law RP | ARI

Reds' Derek Law: Signs minor-league deal with Reds

Law signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Sunday.

Law was designated for assignment by the Tigers in early August and elected free agency after clearing waivers. He'll settle for a minor-league deal with the Reds and will report to Triple-A Louisville to begin his time with the organization. Over 33 appearances at Triple-A Toledo this year, the 31-year-old has posted a 3.23 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 39 innings.

  • Ryan Brasier RP | TEX

Red Sox's Ryan Brasier: Perfect inning to secure hold

Brasier pitched a perfect inning Sunday to earn a hold against the Yankees.

Brasier needed just 13 pitches to set down the Yankees in order in the eighth inning and secure his eighth hold of the season Sunday. The veteran reliever has not been sharp most of the season, as he now has a 5.20 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 45 innings, but he has just three blown saves in 48 appearances and has not allowed a run in six out of his last seven outings. He is a long shot for saves the rest of the season but may lock down a few more holds.

  • Cubs' Keegan Thompson: Struggles in short start

Thompson allowed four runs on two hits across 1.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Reds. He walked three and struck out two.

Thompson labored in the outing, as he needed 70 pitches to retire just five batters. That was enough for manager David Ross, saddling the righty with his second-shortest start this season. Thompson's shortest appearance came on June 12, when he allowed five runs while retiring just two batters against the Yankees. He's still been pretty good overall with a 3.67 ERA and 1.27 WHIP across 100.2 innings, to go along with a 9-5 record. Thompson will look for a smoother outing in his next scheduled start Friday against the Brewers.

  • Brad Hand RP | ATL

Phillies' Brad Hand: Tosses scoreless inning Sunday

Hand allowed a hit and no walks while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning during Sunday's loss to the Mets.

Hand picked up a save July 8 and recorded a hold July 15 but has been used mainly in lower-leverage situations recently. He also got increased competition for closing duties since the Phillies acquired David Robertson ahead of the trade deadline. Although Hand hasn't been used in save situations recently, he's been effective since the All-Star break, posting a 1.59 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 5.2 innings over six appearances to begin the second half of the year.

  • Jose Quijada RP | LAA

Angels' Jose Quijada: Notches third save

Quijada saved Sunday's 4-2 win against the Twins, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.

Quijada made quick work of the heart of Minnesota's lineup on 11 pitches to record his third save of the season and first since Aug. 2, with Jimmy Herget and Ryan Tepera picking up saves in the time between. Sunday's use provided no insight into the closer situation as all three relievers pitched during Saturday's extra-inning win. Quijada has surrendered one run across 5.1 innings in August and possesses a 2.96 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 25 appearances.

  • Angels' Tucker Davidson: Victorious in quality start

Davidson (2-3) earned the win during Sunday's 4-2 victory over Minnesota, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts in six innings.

Davidson served up a two-run shot to Byron Buxton in the first inning but bounced back to keep Minnesota quiet the rest of the way. The 26-year-old rebounded from issuing five walks in his most recent start Aug. 7 to fire 61 of 87 pitches for strikes, including eight of the swinging variety. Davidson has surrendered eight runs on 16 baserunners with four strikeouts in 10 innings across two starts with the Angels, and he's scheduled to pitch again next weekend against Detroit.

  • Wil Crowe RP | PIT

Pirates' Wil Crowe: Handed seventh loss

Crowe (4-7) took the loss during Sunday's 8-7 defeat at the hands of the Giants, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one in 1.1 innings.

Crowe navigated a clean eighth inning on 12 pitches, and manager Derek Shelton opted to stick with the reliever for the ninth after Pittsburgh took the lead in the top of the inning. A leadoff Evan Longoria single brought the winning run to the plate, and Thairo Estrada tagged Crowe for a walkoff home run with one out. The 27-year-old has now faltered in the ninth inning after submitting a stress-free eighth in consecutive games. Closer David Bednar (back) is due to return from the IL within the next week, which could spell the end of Crowe's chances to accrue saves.

  • Camilo Doval RP | SF

Giants' Camilo Doval: Notches fourth win

Doval (4-5) earned the win during Sunday's 8-7 victory over Pittsburgh, allowing an unearned run on two hits and a walk in one inning. He struck out one.

Doval was brought in for the ninth inning of a 6-6 game despite pitching Friday and Saturday. He found himself in a two-on, one-out jam after a Bryan Reynolds single and Ben Gamel walk. A subsequent infield single and Evan Longoria throwing error allowed Reynolds to score while Gamel was thrown out at the plate. Doval struck out Oneil Cruz to end the frame and became the victor when San Francisco walked it off in the bottom of the inning. The 25-year-old tossed 44 pitches across three appearances this weekend, during which he allowed four baserunners and an unearned run while striking out three across three innings.

  • Scott Barlow RP | ATH

Royals' Scott Barlow: Picks up 19th save

Barlow earned the save Sunday over the Dodgers, striking out three in 1.1 innings in a 4-0 victory.

Barlow entered the game in the eighth inning with runners on first and third and two outs and fanned Max Muncy to end the threat. In the ninth, he struck out the first two batters he faced and got Chris Taylor to pop out in foul ground to end the game. It was his 19th save in 22 chances and third save this month. The 29-year-old has been very good in August, allowing one run in eight innings while striking out 10.

  • Tanner Scott RP | LAD

Marlins' Tanner Scott: Blows save, takes loss

Scott (4-5) allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in one inning Sunday against Atlanta. He blew the save opportunity and took the loss.

Scott blew the save on the very first pitch he threw, serving up a game-tying shot to Michael Harris to begin the ninth. The 28-year-old southpaw then gave up two more runs and took his fifth loss of the year. It was his first blown save sine July 13 and the first time he's given up more than two runs in an outing since June 15. Scott is now sporting a 67:34 K:BB and a 4.60 ERA through 47 innings.
