Civale yielded two runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings Friday, taking a no-decision in a 9-8 win over the Guardians. He struck out two.

It wasn't a pretty outing, with Civale tying his season low with just two strikeouts and managing only three swinging strikes on 91 pitches. A lot of the contact he allowed was soft though, with his former team averaging just a 78.5 mph exit velocity off the right-hander. While Civale managed to limit the damage in this one, his first two starts for the Rays have been rather disappointing given favorable matchups versus the Tigers and Guardians.

Sale allowed two runs on one hit over 4.2 innings in Friday's win over Detroit. He struck out seven and did not factor in the decision.

Sale looked strong in his first start since June 1 due to a stress reaction in his left scapula, tossing four shutout frames before the Tigers broke through in the fifth inning. He threw 42 of 58 pitches for strikes, including 12 whiffs. Over his last seven starts, the 34-year-old southpaw has posted a 2.43 ERA with a terrific 48:5 K:BB across 40.2 frames. Sale should have a longer leash in his next start, which is lined up to be next week in Washington.

Vasquez (2-1) registered the win against the Marlins on Friday, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out two.

Ian Hamilton opened for the Yankees and had a spotless first inning before faltering in the second. The team then turned to Vasquez, who permitted a two-out RBI double in the fourth inning and a leadoff homer to Josh Bell in the sixth. Vasquez has managed a 1.89 ERA through his first 19 major-league innings, although that's come with a 12:8 K:BB. He figures to receive additional chances with Carlos Rodon (hamstring) and Nestor Cortes (shoulder) out and Luis Severino struggling.

Houck (face) worked three scoreless innings Friday in a rehab start with Triple-A Worcester, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Houck cruised through the 34-pitch outing against the Triple-A affiliate of the Blue Jays, tallying three strikeouts while yielding only one hit and issuing zero walks. He still has to build up a bit more, but the 27-year-old appears on track to return to Boston's rotation within the next couple of weeks. He required facial surgery in late June after getting struck by a comebacker.

Turnbull (neck) is scheduled to make his next rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Toledo, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

In his first two Triple-A rehab starts he allowed five earned runs in 7.2 innings. Turnbull is still ramping up his workload as he continues to make strides to a return, but with a 7.23 ERA in the majors this season, it remains in question whether the Tigers will make room in the rotation for him.

Mize (elbow) is scheduled to throw his next bullpen session Saturday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Mize threw is first bullpen session July 28 after undergoing Tommy John surgery last June. He only threw fastballs in that session, and it remains to be seen what he will throw in his next one. It is still a possibility that Mize returns before the end of the season, but he is running out time to get fully stretched out in 2023.

Montas (shoulder) appears doubtful to pitch for the Yankees this year, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Montas underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder back in February. He hasn't been able to advance past a throwing program he began in June, getting briefly shut down in July, and the calendar is growing short on the 2023 season. Montas would need to begin a rehab assignment soon to have any chance of rejoining the Yankees in September.

Severino will start Tuesday against Atlanta, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.

Severino has been in danger of getting moved out of the rotation for multiple weeks now, but the Yankees continue to need him after recently losing Carlos Rodon (hamstring) and Nestor Cortes (shoulder) to injuries and Domingo German to the restricted list. Severino, 29, carries a brutal 8.06 ERA through 63.2 innings this season.

Cortes (shoulder) said Friday he will be shut down from throwing for about a month, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Cortes was surprisingly placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with a left rotator cuff strain. He missed all of June and July with a shoulder injury, so this is a pretty ominous setback as it pertains to his availability for the rest of the regular season. Cortes could resume a throwing program in mid-September, but he would likely need at least one simulated game or rehab start before rejoining the big-league rotation. He struck out eight and allowed one hit and one walk over four innings in his Aug. 5 start against Houston.

The Yankees recalled Brito from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.

Brito looks poised to fill the rotation spot left vacant by Nestor Cortes, who has landed back on the injured list because of a rotator cuff strain. The rookie could be in line to start or work as a primary pitcher Saturday in Miami.
