Verlander (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Verlander spent most of the season rehabbing after making just one start early in the year. He felt something in his elbow during a throwing session in late September that required Tommy John surgery. The recovery timeline is anticipated to be 12-to-14 months, so the 37-year-old should miss the entire 2021 season. He'll become a free agent in 2022, and Verlander has expressed hope that he'll be able to continue his career after he recovers.

Montas will be available out of the bullpen for Game 3 of the AL Wild Card Series against the White Sox on Thursday, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

A disappointing regular season in which Montas struggled to a 5.60 ERA in 11 starts led to him not being given the starting nod for any of the three games of the series. He does have experience as a reliever, as 30 of his 70 big-league appearance have come out of the pen, though the last of those came in 2018.

Carrasco gave up four earned runs on two hits and three walks while striking out six in three innings Wednesday in a series-clinching loss to the Yankees. He was not involved in the decision.

On paper, it looked like Cleveland had the slight edge with Carrasco facing Masahiro Tanaka, and that was indeed the case, as Tanaka gave up six runs in four innings. Cleveland's bullpen allowed six runs to score while New York's relievers allowed just three runs, which ended up being the difference as the Yankees won 10-9. Carrasco is under contract with Cleveland for at least the next two seasons.

Ryu was charged with seven runs (three earned) on eight hits over 1.2 innings in a loss to the Rays on Wednesday in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series. He struck out three batters and issued one walk.

This one was over early as the Rays put up seven runs in the first two innings, with the big blow (a Hunter Dozier grand slam) coming right after a fielding error by Bo Bichette. It's a disappointing way to end the season for Ryu, but the lefty had another outstanding campaign in his first year with Toronto -- his third straight regular season with a sub-3.00 ERA. His strikeout rate was up nearly four percentage points from 2019.

Glasnow earned the win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series. He allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings.

Danny Jansen got to Glasnow for a pair of solo homers, accounting for all of Toronto's scoring in the loss. It's easy to forgive Glasnow for easing up a bit against the No. 9 hitter, especially considering the Rays got out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Glasnow will get an extra day of rest before likely starting Game 2 of the American League Division Series.

Keuchel was charged with five runs (three earned) on six hits over 3.1 innings in a loss to the A's on Wednesday in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series. He struck out four and did not issue a walk.

The lefty was unable to keep the momentum he picked up over his final six starts of the regular season (1.06 ERA, 1.12 WHIP). Known as a groundball specialist, Keuchel let two get up and out of the park in this one (off the bats of Marcus Semien in the second inning and Khris Davis in the fourth). He will get a chance to redeem himself if the White Sox are able to advance to the ALDS.

Bassitt earned the win over the White Sox on Wednesday in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series. He allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out five over seven innings.

Oakland needed a win to stay alive after Chicago took Game 1 on Tuesday, and Bassitt answered the call with yet another gem. Bassitt has now turned in three consecutive scoreless appearances and has a minuscule 0.27 ERA in his last five outings dating back to Sept. 7. The right-hander looks like a legitimate frontline starter for the A's.

Urquidy allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against the Twins on Wednesday in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series.

Once again, manager Dusty Baker made a relatively early move to the bullpen -- Zack Greinke was pulled after allowing one run over four innings Tuesday. Once again, the move worked as the trio of Brooks Raley, Cristian Javier and Ryan Pressly combined to shut the Twins out the rest of the way. With that, Houston secured a spot in the ALDS. Urquidy figures to start Game 3 or 4 next week.

Berrios allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings in a no-decision against the Astros on Wednesday in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series.

The Twins were eliminated from the playoffs with a 3-1 loss, but the blame doesn't fall on Berrios, who was spotless outside of the fourth inning. Berrios' ERA reached an even 4.00 during the regular season after three straight years in the high-3.00s. His average fastball velocity was up a fair amount, fueling a small jump in strikeout rate. Unfortunately, there was an even greater uptick in walks and some are left wondering if there is a next level to Berrios' game.

Urquidy is starting Game 2 on Wednesday against the Twins, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

The Astros will look to close out the first-round series against Minnesota on the back of the 25-year-old righty. He missed a large chunk of this season due to COVID-19 and logged a 2.73 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 17 strikeouts in 29.2 innings (five starts). Urquidy has gone at least six innings in each of his last three starts. Cristian Javier will be available to log multiple innings behind Urquidy.
