  • Athletics' James Kaprielian: Joins 30-man roster

Kaprielian was recalled from the Athletics' alternate training site Tuesday.

Although Kaprielian began spring training in major-league camp, he's yet to appear in any regular-season games in the majors. He'll join the Athletics' bullpen to take the place of Jordan Weems (lat), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. The right-handed Kaprielian returned to the mound in 2019 after missing two seasons. He posted a 3.18 ERA and 75:16 K:BB over 68 innings across 19 appearances (16 starts) in the minors last year. Given the stability of Oakland's late-game arms, Kaprielian should pitch mainly in lower-leverage scenarios.

  • Carlos Rodon SP | NYY

White Sox's Carlos Rodon: Placed on injured list

Rodon landed on the the 10-day injured list with shoulder soreness Tuesday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.

Rodon was making just his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery when he was removed due to shoulder soreness Monday as his velocity dropped dramatically. It's not yet clear when he's expected to return. Brady Lail was recalled in a corresponding move, though he's been exclusively a reliever over the last two seasons, so it could be Ross Detwiler who enters the rotation in Rodon's absence.

  • Brad Keller RP | PHI

Royals' Brad Keller: Season debut coming Thursday

Keller (illness) will make his season debut Thursday against the Cubs, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.

A positive coronavirus test wiped out much of Keller's camp and sent him to the COVID-19 injured list to open the season. He'll wind up missing just two turns in the rotation, though it's not yet clear how deep he'll be expected to go in Thursday's game.

  • Rich Hill SP | KC

Twins' Rich Hill: No bullpens until at least Friday

Hill (shoulder) hasn't thrown a bullpen session since his last start back on July 29 and won't throw one until Friday at the earliest, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Hill will get a long rest between his first two starts of the year, as he landed on the 10-day injured list due to shoulder fatigue Monday. He expects to be able to pitch sometime next week, though the Twins have yet to announce a timeline for his return.

  • Matthew Boyd SP | CHC

Tigers' Matthew Boyd: Set to start Friday

Boyd will start Friday against the Pirates, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Boyd had been scheduled to start Tuesday against St. Louis, but that entire four-game midweek series was scrapped due to the Cardinals' coronavirus outbreak. The Tigers will use the unexpected days off to reset their rotation, going with their Opening Day starter for their first day back in action. Boyd has failed to impress in either of his first two starts of the season, allowing eight runs on 15 hits over 10 innings of work.

  • Frankie Montas RP | NYM

Athletics' Frankie Montas: Tosses gem against Seattle

Montas (1-1) earned the win in Monday's 11-1 victory over the Mariners. He tossed seven innings of one-run ball, giving up four hits and four walks while striking out nine.

Montas delivered his best outing of the season by a wide margin, as he notched his first quality start of the campaign while recording a season-high nine strikeouts. He will carry a 2.25 ERA and 1.31 WHIP into his next start, scheduled for Aug. 8 at home against the Astros.

  • Carlos Rodon SP | NYY

White Sox's Carlos Rodon: Re-evaluation on tap

Rodon (shoulder) will be reevaluated Tuesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Rodon's velocity dropped below 90 mph in the second inning of his start against the Brewers on Monday, but he managed to surrender only one run in two innings. Van Schouwen mentions Ross Detwiler as a potential replacement for Rodon if he ends up hitting the injured list. Rodon's initial diagnosis was left shoulder soreness.

  • Rich Hill SP | KC

Twins' Rich Hill: Lands on IL with shoulder fatigue

Hill was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with shoulder fatigue, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

He will be able to return early next week. Manager Rocco Baldelli said that because the roster size drops from 30 to 28 players soon, the team wanted to make this move now to maintain its pitching depth, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. He will continue to throw while on the IL, but he would not have been ready to make a start during this weekend's series in Kansas City. With Jake Odorizzi (back) joining the rotation this weekend, he can slot in for Hill's turn and Lewis Thorpe could conceivably make one more start before potentially being replaced by Hill next week.

  • Gerrit Cole SP | NYY

Yankees' Gerrit Cole: Moves to 3-0

Cole (3-0) gave up one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out four in six innings Monday against the Phillies. He picked up the win.

There was a lengthy rain delay after Cole had finished six innings, and he did not get sent out for the seventh. He threw 91 pitches and 58 for strikes. Cole didn't have his best command in this one, but he was still in control throughout. His next start will come this weekend against the Rays.

  • Carlos Rodon SP | NYY

White Sox's Carlos Rodon: Exits with shoulder soreness

Rodon left Monday's start against the Brewers with left shoulder soreness and will be reevaluated Tuesday.

His fastball velocity fluctuated from the low-90s in the first inning to the mid-80s on his final pitches in the second inning. Despite the troubling downturn in velocity, Rodon only allowed one run on three hits and zero walks while striking out one across two frames. Given his prior history of arm injuries, Rodon should be considered doubtful for his next start.
