Indians' Corey Kluber: Avoids surgery for now

Kluber's fractured right forearm won't require immediate surgery, and he will be re-examined in 3-to-4 weeks, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

Kluber was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday as X-rays and a CT scan confirmed the non-displaced fracture of his right forearm he sustained after being struck by a line drive. It doesn't appear as though surgery has yet to be fully ruled out, and the 33-year-old has no official recovery timeline beyond the 3-to-4 weeks. The veteran right-hander can safely be considered out indefinitely for the time being.

  • Jose Suarez RP | ATH

Angels' Jose Suarez: Nearing return from MiLB IL

Suarez (shoulder) is expected to be activated off the minor-league injured list at Triple-A Salt Lake this weekend, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Suarez has been sidelined since early March due to a sore shoulder. The 21-year-old wasn't expected to face a lengthy absence originally, but he suffered a setback at some point and has remained at extended spring training. Suarez posted a 4.48 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 73:35 K:BB over 78.1 innings for the Bees last season.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Heading to Triple-A

Sandoval was promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Sandoval had a 2.06 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 145:29 K:BB over 122.1 innings last season as he worked his way from Low-A to the Double-A level by the end of the season. The 22-year-old had a 3.60 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 20 innings at Double-A Mobile this season and has been a fast-rising prospect for the Angels since being acquired from the Astros for Martin Maldonado last July.

  • Corey Kluber SP | BOS

Indians' Corey Kluber: Heading to injured list

Kluber (forearm) will be placed on the injured list Friday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.

The news comes as little surprise after Kluber was struck with a line drive Wednesday and suffered a non-displaced fracture of his right forearm. The veteran right-hander is still without a recovery timetable, but the team is expected to have more information later Friday.

  • Dylan Cease SP | TOR

White Sox's Dylan Cease: Not a Rodon replacement

The White Sox will not call up Cease as a replacement for the injured Carlos Rodon (elbow), Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

The White Sox will have Dylan Covey fill Rodon's spot in the rotation for now and may consider options outside the organization, but the club does not want to rush its top-ranked pitching prospect. Cease is 2-1 with a 3.33 ERA and 30:7 K:BB over five starts spanning 24.1 innings at Triple-A Charlotte.

  • Framber Valdez SP | DET

    Astros' Framber Valdez: Throwing strikes

Valdez allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out three over 2.1 innings in Thursday's 8-2 loss to Minnesota.

The Twins rocked starter Brad Peacock, who was gone after allowing seven runs in 3.2 innings, so Valdez was needed to provide length out of the bullpen. Since rejoining the Astros, Valdez has allowed two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out 10 over 8.2 innings. The key for the left-hander is to throw strikes, manager AJ Hinch told David Barron of the Houston Chronicle. After a shaky three-walk effort against the Rangers in his first appearance following his callup, Valdez has thrown 74 percent of his pitches for strikes (59 of 80).

  • White Sox's Lucas Giolito: No-decision in return

Giolito threw five innings in a no-decision against the Red Sox on Thursday, giving up three earned runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out seven and walking two as the White Sox won 6-4.

The right-hander made it through five frames in his first start after his activation from the injured list from a hamstring injury, throwing 98 pitches before exiting the contest and settling for a no-decision. He'll carry a 5.44 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP through 23.2 innings into his next start, which will see him take on the Indians in a Tuesday road matchup.

  • Charlie Morton SP | ATL

Rays' Charlie Morton: Quiets Royals bats

Morton allowed one earned run on five hits and a walk while striking out nine across 6.2 innings Thursday against the Royals. He did not factor into the decision.

Morton allowed four extra-base hits but kept the Royals hitless with runners in scoring position to turn in a strong outing. He also generated an impressive 20 called strikes and 18 swinging strikes. Morton has had strong results early on, posting a 2.52 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 48 strikeouts across 39.1 innings. He'll like to build on that in his next start, likely to come Tuesday against Arizona.

  • Jose Berrios SP | TOR

Twins' Jose Berrios: Goes seven strong

Berrios (5-1) allowed two earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out five across seven innings to earn the win Thursday against the Astros.

Berrios allowed a solo home run to Alex Bregman in the first inning but held the Astros scoreless thereafter until the seventh inning. He was particularly efficient, needing only 88 pitches to retire 21 batters, highlighted by 20 called strikes. After being somewhat prone to blowup outings last season -- he allowed five or more earned runs seven times last season -- Berrios has allowed more than three runs in only one start this campaign. He'll look to keep things going in his next start, likely to come Tuesday at Toronto.

  • Carlos Rodon SP | NYY

White Sox's Carlos Rodon: Concern regarding injury

General manager Rick Hahn expressed concern when discussing Rodon's elbow injury, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.

Rodon was sent to the injured list Thursday with what was described as an edema in the flexor mass in his throwing arm. While the exact severity of the issue is not yet known, the White Sox are expecting to be without Rodon for a lengthy period of time. "At this point, you can say based simply upon the edema he's going to be down for a little while," Hahn told Scott Merkin of MLB.com. The general manager also didn't rule out the possibility of Tommy John surgery, stating that everything is still on the table until the southpaw is further evaluated. The White Sox may eventually look outside of the organization for a replacement starter, but for now, Dylan Covey is expected to fill in for Rodon in the rotation.
