  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

Red Sox's Chris Sale: Not returning over weekend

Sale (shoulder) won't return to Boston over the weekend and will instead throw a bullpen session Saturday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

Sale made just a single start in August between two stints on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. His latest stint will continue for at least a little while longer, though Ian Browne of MLB.com reports that Sale could be used as an "opener" at some point during Boston's upcoming homestand, which lasts from Sept. 7-16.

  • Kyle Gibson SP | BAL

Twins' Kyle Gibson: Strikes out five in loss to Astros

Gibson (7-12) allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk across seven innings Monday to take the loss against the Astros. He struck out five.

Gibson gave up a solo home run in the first inning and allowed a pair of unearned runs on two hits and an error in the second. He allowed another solo shot in the fourth but was able to settle down over his final three frames, though he received little offensive support and eventually suffered his 12th loss. Gibson struggled to find the strike zone at times, but his 12 groundball outs helped limit the damage. He had allowed nine earned runs over 10 innings in his previous two starts and will look to build on this improved outing in his next scheduled start against the Yankees.

  • Dallas Keuchel SP | MIL

Astros' Dallas Keuchel: Six strong innings in win over Twins

Keuchel (11-10) allowed one unearned run on five hits and two walks across six innings Monday to earn the win against the Twins. He struck out six.

Keuchel coasted through the outing, limiting baserunners for the most part and inducing eight groundball outs to help keep the visitors at bay. He allowed an unearned run in the sixth following a Carlos Correa error, but he was able to escape and secure his 11th win. Keuchel has now delivered three consecutive quality starts, posting a strong 17:5 K:BB over 19 innings in that span. He'll take a solid 3.46 ERA into this weekend's matchup with the Red Sox.

  • Rangers' Jeffrey Springs: Finds success as opener

Springs tossed two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three as he didn't factor into the decision Monday against the Angels.

Springs managed to provide the Rangers with two solid innings to begin the ballgame, and he was relieved in the third by Ariel Jurado. Springs has now turned in three straight scoreless outings (five innings), and he owns an impressive 2.29 ERA with 21 strikeouts through 19.2 frames this season. Since being called up from Triple-A Round Rock on July 31, he's served as reliable option out of the bullpen.

  • Yonny Chirinos SP | MIA

Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Nabs third win

Chirinos (3-5) allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out five over seven innings as he snagged the victory Monday against Toronto.

Chirinos was deployed in the second inning after Ryne Stanek served as the opener in the first. Although Chirinos dealt with a fair amount of traffic on the bases, he held the Blue Jays to one run. The 24-year-old sits with a 3.76 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 56 strikeouts over 69.1 innings this season, and figures to serve as a long reliever for the remainder of the year.

  • Marcus Stroman SP | NYY

Blue Jays' Marcus Stroman: Hampered by blister yet again

Stroman (4-9) allowed four runs on six hits while striking out one over 1.2 innings as he took the loss Monday against Tampa Bay. After the game, manager John Gibbons stated Stroman's blister is "clearly affecting him," Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Stroman was lit up in his first game back since landing on the disabled list Aug. 19, and he was yanked after recording just five outs on 49 pitches. A blister on Stroman's throwing hand caused him to miss time on the shelf last month, and it appears the same issue is still bothering him. Although the 27-year-old wants to keep pitching through the injury, Gibbons is advising a cautious approach to the final month of the season, per Nicholson-Smith. If Stroman manages to make his next start, he'd be slated to take the hill this weekend against Cleveland.

  • Charlie Morton SP | ATL

Astros' Charlie Morton: Plays catch Monday

Morton (shoulder) played catch Monday and will throw a bullpen session within the next few days, the Houston Chronicle reports.

The Astros hope Morton can get himself ready to pitch Saturday against Boston. If he's not available, the Astros will give the start to Josh James.

  • Frankie Montas RP | NYM

Athletics' Frankie Montas: To handle bulk of innings Tuesday

Montas is expected to work the middle innings during Tuesday's game against the Yankees, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.

Montas was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Friday after getting the nod Thursday, but after Doug Melvin stated that Montas will get some work Tuesday, it appears the Athletics will make a move prior to the ballgame. He's served as a starter for Oakland in 2018, going 5-4 with a 3.96 ERA and 43 strikeouts through 63.2 innings (11 starts).

  • Nathan Eovaldi SP | TEX

Red Sox's Nathan Eovaldi: Throws short scoreless outing

Eovaldi lasted just 3.1 innings Monday against the Braves but did not allow a run, giving up two hits and four walks while striking out four. He did not factor into the decision.

The Braves ultimately couldn't get to Eovaldi, but he labored significantly throughout his start, requiring 86 pitches to record just 10 outs. After an excellent start to his Boston career, Eovaldi has now made three straight starts of no more than four innings. He's averaged just 3.7 innings over his last six appearances. It's unclear whether or not the Red Sox will keep faith with him, as they have two off days in the next seven days and Chris Sale potentially returning from his shoulder injury.

  • Luke Farrell RP | WAS

Angels' Luke Farrell: Claimed by Angels

Farrell was claimed off waivers by the Angels on Monday.

Farrell, who was designated for assignment by the Cubs at the beginning of September, will report to rookie-level Orem. The 27-year-old posted a 5.17 ERA and 39:16 K:BB across 31.1 innings with the Cubs this season.
