Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Battered by Red Sox

Chirinos (1-5) was the pitcher of record for the Rays in Friday's 7-3 loss to the Red Sox, as he got tagged for five runs on nine hits and a walk over six innings of relief while striking out one.

Ryne Stanek got things off to a poor start for Tampa, allowing two runs in an inning of work as the team's opener after being handed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, and Chirinos was only able to hold onto the lead for a couple more innings before the floodgates opened. The 24-year-old had been sharp in his prior two appearances against the sad-sack O's and White Sox, but the Red Sox offense proved to be too much for him to handle. Consider Chirinos and his 3.96 ERA a potential streaming option at best when he's next scheduled to see the bulk of the innings in a long relief role.

Rays' Vidal Nuno: Struggles in first rehab appearance

Nuno (hamstring) allowed three earned runs on five hits over 1.2 innings in High-A Palm Beach's loss to Charlotte on Friday. He struck out one.

As his final line implies, the veteran southpaw was nowhere near sharp, and all three earned runs he surrendered came off a pair of home runs. Nuno is slated for multiple rehab appearances, and by the looks of Friday's outing, he'll need plenty of work before being deemed ready for activation.

  • Indians' Carlos Carrasco: Continues dominant run since All-Star break

Carrasco (15-6) picked up the win in Friday's 2-1 victory over the Orioles, allowing three hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings while striking out six.

The right-hander has now moved into a tie for the AL lead in wins with a spectacular run since the All-Star break -- Carrasco has delivered quality starts in six straight outings, posting a 1.33 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 49:5 K:BB in 40.2 innings over that stretch while winning four of the six starts. He'll have a hard time keeping his momentum going, however, when he next takes the mound Wednesday in Boston.

  • Marco Gonzales RP | TEX

Mariners' Marco Gonzales: To skip next outing

Gonzales won't make Sunday's scheduled start as he'll be pushed back to Wednesday against Houston. TJ Cotterill of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Gonzales dealt with control issues during his last outing, so he'll receive a few extra days of rest. Sunday's starter for the series finale against the Dodgers is still up in the air, but a decision on who will toe the rubber should be made in the near future.

  • Yonny Chirinos SP | MIA

Rays' Yonny Chirinos: To pitch bulk of innings Friday

Chirinos is expected to serve as the long reliever for Friday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

With Ryne Stanek set to open the game, Chirinos figures to enter the contest in the second or third inning and eat up the bulk of the middle-to-late frames. The 24-year-old owns a 3.50 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 43 punchouts across 46.1 innings heading into Friday's action.

  • Deck McGuire SP | TOR

Angels' Deck McGuire: Recalled from Salt Lake

McGuire was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

McGuire will rejoin the major-league bullpen after being optioned following a disastrous spot start against the Indians on Aug. 5. Look for him to be utilized in low-leverage spots during his time with the club.

  • Angels' Odrisamer Despaigne: Officially recalled from minors

Despaigne was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake prior to Friday's start against Texas, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

As expected, Despaigne will take the hill in Arlington after being traded to the Angels from Miami on Tuesday. The right-hander only recorded one start with the Marlins this season, but has started 43 games dating back to the start of the 2014 season. In a corresponding move, the club also recalled Deck McGuire and sent down Taylor Cole and Osmer Morales.

  • Myles Jaye SP | CLE

Indians' Myles Jaye: Back from disabled list

Jaye (finger) returned from the minor-league disabled list Friday.

Jaye had been out with a finger blister. The 26-year-old has an ugly 6.38 ERA in 60.2 innings at the Triple-A level with Columbus and Rochester.

  • Vidal Nuno SP | WAS

Rays' Vidal Nuno: Begins rehab assignment

Nuno (hamstring) will start a minor-league rehab assignment with High-A Charlotte on Friday, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times reports.

Nuno is expected to require multiple appearances in the minors before being activated from the DL. He's been sidelined since early July due to a right hamstring strain.

  • Twins' Adalberto Mejia: Dealing with nerve irritation, no timetable for return

Mejia (elbow) does not have a timetable for a return after being diagnosed with nerve irritation, Dan Hayes of The Athletic Minnesota reports.

The Twins' current plan is to rest Mejia for the time being until the irritation subsides. Mejia was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 10 with what was initially described as a wrist strain, but further testing has revealed a nerve issue above his pitching elbow. He'll be sidelined indefinitely, which keeps the Twins' rotation depth on the thin side.
