  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

Red Sox's Chris Sale: Hopeful to return Tuesday vs. Toronto

Sale (shoulder) is optimistic he'll be activated from the 10-day disabled list in time to start Wednesday against the Blue Jays, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Sale landed on the disabled list Saturday with mild left shoulder inflammation, but his stay on the shelf shouldn't be long. If he manages to return after missing the minimum, the 29-year-old lefty will toe the rubber for Wednesday's tilt in Toronto.

  • Yonny Chirinos SP | MIA

Rays' Yonny Chirinos: To handle bulk of innings Friday

Chirinos will be deployed as a long reliever for Friday's matchup against the Angels, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Chirinos surrendered four runs (three earned) across three innings of work in his previous outing against the Orioles on Sunday. He'll be asked to come on in relief after Ryne Stanek opens Friday's contest.

  • Red Sox's Eduardo Rodriguez: Throws without boot

Rodriguez (ankle) managed to throw without a boot on flat ground at Fenway Park on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Rodriguez has been on the shelf with a right ankle sprain since July 15, but he's made significant progress of late, as he finally shed his walking boot. He's expected to return within the next few weeks and figures to increase his throwing intensity accordingly. The next test for Rodriguez will be throwing off a mound: he's slated to toss a bullpen session Sunday, per Christopher Smith of MassLive.com.

  • Lance Lynn SP | STL

Yankees' Lance Lynn: Shines in long relief in debut

Lynn worked 4.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen Wednesday in the Yankees' 7-5 loss to the Orioles. He scattered five hits and issued no walks while striking out five in the 71-pitch appearance.

Lynn, who was acquired Monday from the Twins, was summoned in long relief for his Yankees debut after starter Sonny Gray was blasted for seven runs through 2.2 innings. Despite not having worked out of the bullpen since he was a member of the Cardinals in the 2015 NLDS, Lynn performed brilliantly, allowing the Yankees to stay competitive in the late innings. According to the Associated Press, Yankees skipper Aaron Boone wouldn't commit to keeping Gray in the rotation after the ugly outing inflated the right-hander's season ERA to 5.56. Lynn would make for the most logical replacement if the Yankees elect to make a change the next time Gray's turn comes up Monday against the White Sox.

  • Blake Snell SP | LAD

Rays' Blake Snell: In line for start Saturday

Snell (shoulder) will likely return from the 10-day DL and take the hill against the White Sox on Saturday, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times reports.

Snell threw a bullpen session Wednesday, which appeared to be his final obstacle before coming off the shelf. Expect the Rays to confirm his status within the next 24 hours. Across 20 starts this year, he's logged a 2.27 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with a 10.1 K/9.

  • Tyler Glasnow SP | LAD

Rays' Tyler Glasnow: Fans five in abbreviated Rays debut

Glasnow didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 7-2 win over the Angels, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over three innings while striking out five.

The right-hander got pulled after throwing 48 pitches (34 strikes), and it's not yet clear whether this was due to Glasnow working out of the bullpen with the Pirates, or because the Rays don't plan to fully stretch him out and keep him as an opener/long reliever, but either way it was an impressive debut with his new club. The 24-year-old has battled control issues in the majors, but with only 144.1 big-league innings under his belt he's still very capable of putting everything together and reaching his sky-high ceiling. He'll next take the mound Tuesday at home against the Orioles.

  • Vidal Nuno SP | WAS

Rays' Vidal Nuno: Hits 'plateau' in rehab

Manager Kevin Cash stated Wednesday that Nuno (hamstring) has "kind of plateaued" in his rehab, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports. "We're trying to get him strengthened up," he said. "Probably a couple of days of not doing anything, then get him back out there so his arm can stay in shape."

Nuno was slated to make an appearance for High-A Charlotte on Tuesday, but that did not come to pass. Instead, the Rays are giving the veteran some down time before they ramp his rehab back up, keeping his potential activation date up in the air for the time being.

  • Blake Snell SP | LAD

Rays' Blake Snell: Another bullpen Wednesday

Snell (shoulder) threw another bullpen Wednesday without setbacks, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports.

The session was presumably Snell's final hurdle before being activated from the disabled list. The southpaw had also thrown a successful bullpen last Sunday, but the team wanted to see him throw once more from the mound before getting him back into game action. An exact return date for Snell is likely to be made available within the next couple of days.

  • Dallas Keuchel SP | MIL

Astros' Dallas Keuchel: Delivers quality start in win

Keuchel (9-9) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings while striking out two in an 8-3 victory over the Mariners.

The Astros gave Keuchel plenty of run support, but the southpaw still came through with his fifth quality start in his last six outings, and 14th of the season. He'll take a 3.61 ERA into his next start Tuesday in San Francisco.

  • Sonny Gray SP | BOS

Yankees' Sonny Gray: Surrenders seven runs in disastrous outing

Gray (8-8) allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three across 2.2 innings as he was saddled with the loss Wednesday against Baltimore.

After putting up three straight winning performances, Gray took a step backwards. He was knocked around for five runs in the second inning, following by two more in the third prior to leaving with a six-run deficit. Following the ugly outing, manager Aaron Boone stated that the team is considering removing Gray from the starting rotation for the time being, Marc Carig of The Athletic New York reports. This would open the door for recent acquisition Lance Lynn to enter the rotation. The 28-year-old Gray has struggled to a 5.56 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with a 99:46 K:BB over 103.2 innings this season.
