  • Carlos Rodon SP | NYY

White Sox's Carlos Rodon: Throws strong start against Orioles on Sunday

Rodon held the Orioles to two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks over six innings Saturday, but he did not factor into the decision. He struck out seven.

This was one of Rodon's better starts of the season in terms of results, and it was also his hardest start of the year in terms of velocity (his fastball averaged over 95 mph, and he frequently neared 100). However, the White Sox were unable to break the tie until after he exited, so Rodon remains stuck on two wins on the year.

  • Matthew Boyd SP | CHC

Tigers' Matt Boyd: Captures third victory versus Mets on Saturday

Boyd (3-2) allowed three runs on six hits, struck out five and walked three over five innings in a victory over the Mets on Saturday.

The lefty tossed up two bombs for the second straight outing, but they were of the solo variety, and the Tigers offense spotted Boyd six runs. The 25-year-old was also uncharacteristically wild, walking three batters for the first time in nearly two months, but none of them came around to score. Boyd is now 3-2 with a 4.77 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 49 strikeouts in 54.2 innings.

  • Sonny Gray SP | BOS

Athletics' Sonny Gray: Leaves game with extensor muscle soreness

Gray left Saturday's game against the Cubs with right extensor muscle soreness, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Gray held the Cubs to two runs over five innings without a walk before being forced off the hill (72 pitches). He was replaced on the mound by Liam Hendriks. While the A's did not specify which extensor muscle was bothering Gray, the team did mention that the injury was to his right side, so it's presumably an issue with his pitching forearm. His status for his next start is up in the air.

  • Taijuan Walker SP | LAA

Mariners' Taijuan Walker: Activated, starting Saturday

Walker (foot) was activated from the DL and will start Saturday against the Angels, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Walker, carrying a 2.75 home ERA on the season, will oppose Tyler Skaggs at Safeco Field in his first start back following a month-long absence due to a foot injury. The injury was aggravated a couple times in the weeks leading up to his placement on the DL, and it's something he will have to manage the rest of the way before ultimately undergoing surgery in the offseason.

  • Blake Snell SP | LAD

Rays' Blake Snell: Solid despite abbreviated outing in Friday no-decision

Snell didn't factor into the decision Friday versus the Twins, but turned in another solid outing, striking out seven while giving up just one earned run on four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings.

The rookie was at 97 pitches by the sixth, leading to his exit. However, Snell certainly impressed once again while on the mound, inducing 12 swinging strikes while putting together a fifth straight start with no more than two earned runs given up. He also stayed away from the long ball for the fourth time in the last five trips to the mound and has given up just two gopher balls over his 55 innings this season. Snell brought his ERA down to a stellar 2.95 with the outing and will look for his fourth victory when he faces the Blue Jays in Toronto next Wednesday.

  • Tigers' Justin Verlander: July's dominance continues in August

Verlander fanned nine in a 4-3 win over Noah Syndergard and the Mets on Friday night. He allowed two runs in six innings of work.

Verlander was so dialled in that he whiffed six in a seven-batter span heading into the fourth. And he then retired seven of the last eight guys he faced. Friday was just an extension of Verlander's dominant July were he went 4-0 with a 1.69 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 42.2 innings. Those numbers were enough for him to earn AL pitcher of the month honors for July.

  • Martin Perez SP | ATL

Rangers' Martin Perez: Drops fourth straight decision Friday in Houston

Perez (7-8) pitched seven innings, allowing five runs, eight hits and three walks while striking out four Astros in Friday's loss.

Perez hadn't gone at least seven innings in back-to-back starts since 2014, but he accomplished that Friday; however, that's about the extent of his accomplishments on the night. The left-hander had won six straight decisions from May 24 to June 26, but Perez remains winless since then (a span of seven starts in which he's gone 0-4). His next start will be at home on Wednesday against the Rockies.

  • Dallas Keuchel SP | MIL

Astros' Dallas Keuchel: Silences Astros with complete-game gem

Keuchel (7-11) tossed a three-hit shutout, walking two and striking out seven in Friday's win over the Rangers.

The reigning AL Cy Young winner allowed a career-low three hits to notch his fourth MLB shutout. His gem was much-needed coming off one of his worst starts of the season in which he was tagged for seven runs in five innings Sunday at Detroit. The left-hander improved his ERA to 4.56, its lowest mark since the season's first month. Keuchel's next start is Wednesday in Minnesota against a Twins team that hit him hard back on May 2.

  • Alex Cobb SP | DET

Rays' Alex Cobb: Fires three solid innings in Thursday rehab appearance

Cobb (elbow) threw 41 pitches in Thursday's rehab appearance for High-A Charlotte, allowing an earned run on three hits over three innings and striking out two, Bryan Levine of Suncoast Sports reports.

It was a notable boost in workload for Cobb, who'd thrown 23 pitches over two innings last Friday against Brevard County. He retired the first five batters he faced Thursday before yielding a double and run-scoring single to consecutive batters. That was the extent of Cobb's hiccups however, as he got 31 of his 41 offerings into the strike zone and also notched first-pitch strikes on seven of the 12 hitters he faced while consistently hitting 92 mph with his fastball. The 28-year-old is expected to ramp up his pitch count once again in his next outing, which the Rays have yet to announce.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Orioles' Wade Miley: Pitches just five innings in losing O's debut

Miley (7-9) gave up four runs on eight hits while striking out five over five innings in Thursday's loss to the Rangers.

Acquired from the Mariners at the trade deadline while on a streak of three consecutive quality starts, Miley quickly ended that in his O's debut, letting the Rangers score early and often against him. Baltimore's offense may help Miley earn some more wins down the stretch, but don't expect much (if any) improvement on his ugly ratios. There aren't many formats where a guy with a 5.08 ERA and 1.36 WHIP can be rolled out without major reservations.
