    Twins undecided on Friday starter

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Monday that he is unsure who will start Friday against Detroit, MLB.com reports.

Gardenhire said it will either be Kyle Gibson, P.J. Walters or Samuel Deduno to make the start.

Gibson has been dominant in the minors lately but Walters and Deduno have more major league experience at this time.

  • Jake Odorizzi takes no-decision in Tampa debut

Starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi made his Tampa Bay debut Monday at Toronto, taking a no-decision after tossing five innings. The right-hander was charged with three runs on five hits and one walk, while striking out six.

Odorizzi, who made two starts for the Royals last season, got off to a rough start. He allowed two runs in the first inning and another run in the second inning. However, he settled down to toss three straight scoreless innings before turning the game over to the bullpen.

"Starting off I just couldn't get in a groove," Odorizzi said. "Once I did, it felt good."

Odorizzi is expected to remain in the rotation while David Price is on the disabled list. Unless they skip his next start because of Thursday's off-day, then Odorizzi should be back on the hill Sunday against the Yankees.

  • Alex Cobb SP | DET

Alex Cobb doesn't feel strikeout pace will last

Rays starting pitcher Alex Cobb has struck out 52 batters in 53 innings, resulting in a career-high 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings. But the right-hander said Monday he's not trying to get strikeouts and isn't confident his strikeout rate will remain this high.

"I'm trying to attack the zone," Cobb said, per MLB.com. "Once I get to two strikes, then I'm trying to put guys away. I don't think I'm striking out too many guys. I'd obviously rather get balls put into play earlier in the count, put it on the ground. But when it doesn't go that way, you have to improvise and try to get the guy out to the best ability. Once there are two strikes, I try to put them away. It's just going that way right now. It won't be like that later in the year."

  • Justin Masterson honored for big week

Indians starting pitcher Justin Masterson was named AL player of the week after winning twice last week (April 13-19). Masterson threw 16 scoreless innings in wins over New York and Seattle.

Masterson allowed seven hits and five walks, while striking out 20. He had a complete-game shutout against the Yankees.

The right-hander has a three-game winning streak. He has a 1.17 ERA and .139 opponents' batting average in that span.

Twins ready to call on Kyle Gibson?

The Twins have an open spot in their rotation Friday at Detroit after starting pitcher Pedro Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Rochester Monday. MLB.com reports Cole De Vries, who was optioned to the minors May 18, is not an option, leading to speculation pitching prospect Kyle Gibson is a strong candidate to be promoted from Rochester.

Gibson took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of his last start Sunday against Lehigh Valley. He finished with his second complete-game shutout in his last three starts and would be on regular rest to start Friday.

Kyle Gibson racking up complete-game shutouts

Twins starting pitcher prospect Kyle Gibson took a no-hitter into the eighth inning Sunday for Triple-A Rochester and threw his second complete-game shutout in his last three starts in an 11-0 win against Lehigh Valley.

"I was forcing the action and making them swing the bat early," Gibson told MLB.com. "I felt pretty good there toward the end."

Gibson improved to 3-5 with a 3.25 ERA and .240 opponents' batting average in nine starts. He has 46 strikeouts, with 14 walks and two home runs allowed.

"He was really attacking hitters and mixing his speed," catcher Eric Fryer said. "All the hitters he faced, he only fell behind a couple times. His sinker today was probably the pitch that was the key to the game. They were really beating that into the ground. He doesn't have to work too hard when it's working like that."

  • Jake Odorizzi officially recalled for start

The Rays officially added starter Jake Odorizzi to the 25-man roster on Sunday after a win over the Orioles, the Tampa Bay Times reports. Odorizzi is recalled from Triple-A Durham with Jeff Beliveau going back down.

Odorizzi is taking over David Price's vacated spot in the rotation for as long as Price is on the disabled list. He begins with a start Monday against Toronto.

  • Justin Masterson dominates Mariners

Indians starting pitcher Justin Masterson dominated the Mariners over seven shutout innings in a win Sunday.

Masterson set a season high with 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits and two walks. Masterson has seven quality starts in 10 outings. His ERA dropped to 2.83 with a 2.93 FIP.

  • Justin Masterson Ks 11 for seventh win

Indians starter Justin Masterson had a season-high 11 strikeouts Sunday in a 6-0 win at home against Felix Hernandez and the Mariners.

Masterson struck out the final two batters he faced to go seven innings. He allowed three hits and two walks over 106 pitches. He threw 68 pitches for strikes to lower his ERA to 2.83. The Indians gave Masterson (7-2) plenty of support with a 6-0 lead after four innings.

Masterson has won three straight and has given up three runs over that 23-inning span with 27 Ks. He makes his next start Friday at Boston.

  • Jake Odorizzi to remain in David Price's rotation spot

Rays starter Jake Odorizzi, who will take David Price's start Monday against Toronto, will make all of Price's starts until the Cy Young winner returns, the Tampa Tribune reports.

Part of the trade that sent former Ray James Shields to Kansas City, Odorizzi is 4-0 with a 3.83 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 47 strikeouts in 44 2/3 innings over eight starts with Triple-A Durham this season.
